What is the clarifier mod for the Ranger 696F? Any other good mods
to do? I assume the extra channels are the same as other MB8719 PLL
radios.

The mod you want it's quite easy! ;)
Locate the trimmer marked as VR13 this is the AM Power control, it
is a 5K trimmer, if you want you can use the commad of SWR Cal (it
would be a 5k variable resistor)
Anyway you can find all details at:
http://www.geocities.com/dre_cb/alan/ept360014b.htm
by the way, your rtx have only 2 final transistor (2 x 1969 or
similar) and 1 driver

I hope to listen you asap on the air

Does anyone have a mod/web page for the above rig? It will tx on 15w
for a short time, then revert to 5w.(Standard power.)
It has the 3 transistors on the back (1969 or similar.)
Thanks.

Part value changeover mods are usually
regurgitations of what specific techs like
to do for their own reasons. When analyzed
you find that most are misguided and therefore
inferior to simply removing the active device
in the limiter circuit and setting the mic gain
     properly.

Hi all, I've a little problem: my radio is broken off and now in SSB
only pushing the tx button the output is 21W (the max output for the
radio) whit a terrible hiss... the radio is a Lafayette Typhoon (some
like superstar 3900 or cobra 148) with 226 channel (40 + alpha x 5
band), modulation am/fm/ssb/cw and pll mc145106p
Someone know where I can find the schema? Or how I can try to repair
my radio?
Many thank's to all for your courtesy

Sorry if this question has been asked but my search came up empty. I
just picked up a used (like new, unmodified) Cobra 148 GTL ST (not
the NW). I have owned the 148 XLR, 148 GTL, and Uniden Grant.
1. Is there any real difference with the ST model? If so, what are
they?
2. Is the frequency mod, RF tune-up, & modulation boost process the
same?
Thanks!

Yhanks, but the unit must be powered on right?? When I reset the bios
on any of my clients computers because they @$&! forgot their bios
password they must be powered on so I guess the same goes here. I was
afraid of shorting out the whole damn unit :)

The 3-pin regulators are cheaper. Cheaper
is the reason for 99.9% of all changes to an
     exising design.

> Anyway,that is the
> section i am looking for info on.

I don't see too many of the newer 148s.
I still have a source for Grant LTs

The 3-pin regulator is a 9 volt regulator.
The leftmost pin is the supply pin, the
center is ground, and the rightmost is
the output. Then the output is run through
a rectifier diode to lower the voltage by
roughly 600 mV. They must have gotten
a special deal on a large quantity of 9 volt
regulators because 8 volt regulators are
much more common and should be cheaper.

In any case the 9 volt regulator is a constant
(TX and RX) voltage source. If the 9 volts is
there all the time, it's okay. The only problem
is that I don't think they included an adequate
amount of RF decoupling. The reason I mention
that is because I've found that whenever I've done
an aggressive tuneup to one of those units I end
up with sideband distortion. The solution is to
add .01 uF decoupling caps to both the input
and output of the regulator and the PLL chip supply
     pin.

As for the TX/RX switching, I don't have any specific
magic words for you. In my experience, most TX/RX
switching problems can be found fairly fast by simply
starting at the mic jack and working your way in until
     you run into the unexpected.

> Also the little module that runs
> the lights on the front face.

At best all I have is a very bad 11 X 17 drawing that
I wouldn't call a schematic. If you want to dig for it,
scan it in and send it to you, let me know. And even
at that, don't get your hopes up because I can't say
for sure that I have it. My suggestion is to keep at
it using logical reasoning and you own notes as you
progress. Your own notes will be of a helluva lot more
help than what I have if I have it.

Hello group. It is nice to see a group on here that deals with cb's.
I go by Wizard on the radio. I run a cb shop in odessa,tx,Driver's
Haul Of Fame By Dad Carter. I am curious. Is there anyone on here
that shares schematics or might have one for a 148 gtl nw st? I have
several companies that I deal with and none of them have one
available for sale. And still others say that it is the same as the
old 148's. I know that isn't true. Anyway hello to all. Hope to make
new friends. If I can help with anything for anyone,Please feel free
to ask. I will help as much as I can.

I am having problems trouble shooting the tx/rx switching. The fact
they changed the voltage regulator to an 8 volt reg is beyond me.
They should have left the mb3756 there instead. Anyway, that is the

If it doesn't suit you as is, buy an AB class 8-pill
like a Texas Star 1600 and use your current amp
     as a driver.

CB DX happens most in the bands that are just
above or below the normal 40. Try the band just
below the normal 40 for AM, and the one just above
     the normal 40 for sideband.

Hmmmm.....Not exactly sure I've located where to jumper to reset the
unit...I don't see C506 printed on the board or chip...I do see a
VERY small vertical chip..is that it? If so, I assume the unit must
be powered on before shorting both sides of this chip...it's brownish
with two ends that look like solder or tinned ends....
