Where was the sun that the weatherman forecasted? Not in this area.

There wasn't any point in aiming the camera at anything that was moving on
the mainline.

Stopped by at Cresson Engine Terminal after lunch at Vito's. The lovely
Miss Kayla was our waitress.

There was nothing in the terminal. 0 horespower. It was bare.

So, Donna and I went to Southfork, I got out and got on my hands and knees
and sniffed the rail.

Yep, they were out there! 3 SD80MACS were on track 11 at SO.

NS loaded at PBS and at Rosebud today. MACS look good in any light.

A quick stop at Rosebud. Got there just minutes after the last car was
loaded. Shot both ends and talked to the tipple foreman. He confirmed that NS
was loading at PBS today. Made a quick call to Kimmel, who was in
Lewistown, and then off to PBS.

Got to PBS as C51 was pulling off the loading tracks. The C51 pulled down
to CAIRN and dropped anchor. A C48, which we would pass on our way back to
Windber, was heading south to recrew them.

As we drove up the hill on RT 56 out of Windber, a quick look to the right
revealed that the C91 was on the switch at PAINT. Made our way to RT 160
and shot the rear of the C91 there.

Followed this train up to SUMMIT and shot the head end there.

Moved ahead to Southfork where we watched the mainline as the C91 got
close.

There are 13 SD80MACS in the Southfork Pool.

The switch at PAINT was hit by vandals and is not a remote switch at the
moment.

All in all, it was a typical day on the Secondary.

Might I remind everyone. Rosebud to the tipple area at Central City is a
25 mile round trip.

This was filming of the last scene in the film.
The experience of the week was interesting, though slow at times.
Many on here will get a chuckle out of some of the action when they see the
film, but you know Hollywood's need for the dramatic.

Railpace is featuring the Southfork Secondary as it's cover story in the current
issue.  As always, there's a nice spread of pictures, informative text and two
topographical maps detailing the best photospots.  I'm no expert on this line,
but the magazine seems to cover it well.   Also see the email below for another
magazine heads-up.

I managed to get out for an overnighter to the West Slope this past weekend.

After checking on the Saturday morning arrival of the 510 in Spring Grove (had a
CRQ D8, 2nd of three units), I headed towards Harrisburg in the dreary drizzle.
Upon arrival at Enola, I found a Union Pacific unit sitting out in the open,
with a clean Conrail unit nearby.  Then, lots of track authorities holding up
traffic to the west: Nothing running at Cove.  Nothing at Duncannon. Nothing at
Newport, Thompsontown or Port Royal.    :-(

At Lewistown, maintainers were about to release the railroad, so I sat tight at
the MP 172 "lollipops".  Then the floodgates opened!  The only WB was the
Pennsylvanian, and the EB highlight was Z8Q, the ethanol train.  She had an
NS leader, with TWO CRQ SD40-2s and two CSX units.  Definitely worth chasing for
two more locations!

By now, it was close to sunset, so off to the slopes!  Upon arrival at Cresson,
I grabbed some pizza (to go) at Vito's, and parked by the signals for some night
photography.  First attempt with the new Nikon: turned out OK, viewing on the
little screen. (Have to wait for my home computer to be fixed after a 'Major'
systems failure).     Then, off to check in for the night at John Shuniak's
Cassandra Overlook "Mopar" Motel.  We chatted for about an hour, enjoying his
'museum' gift shop and railroadianna collection, and swapping war stories of our
past and present Mopars.  Then, off to the signal bridge at Summerhill for some
more night photos. A late fog rolled in, and in two hours only one movement: WB
light helpers   :-(

Sunday brought a hazy / sunny day with temps in the 60s.  I shot trains at 6
different signals (including my first visit to the Jamestown bridge: there's a
lot less brush and branches there now...),   and was finishing up at the Portage
258.8s, when along comes Frank and Dan S.  Some other 'Johnstowners' were at
other locations, or home watching the Steelers game (LOL).  Good game, but they
lost.  After a light pair with CR #3347 rolled west, it was time to head home.
While gassing-up in Cresson, 3347 was shoving an eastbound, so off to the Rt. 53
overpass!  Then, after getting on Rt.22 east, I pulled over twice to shoot 3347
up on the hillside as she descended into the valley.

Once again, a very enjoyable trip to the West Slope!

It will be interesting to see if they run it out to Island Ave and then
backtrack with the flow of traffic... Etna's a good place for burial indeed.

I suppose if there isn't much happening they could run westbound thru
Blairsville instead though.

The radio reception was good.

Could pick up the Newton-Hamilton detector at MPPT 186.6 as the afternoon
imtermodals and a 591 were rolling over it.

At the Horseshoe, there was a couple on the number three track side of the
curve with a child that was running around without supervision.

An eastbound warned a westbound, ALTO Tower got in on it, and soon after
the NS special agent was on his way.

I got lucky when the 6316-6319 was running light behind a 26T on approach
and restricted signals.

Hello I'm trying to figure out traffic destinations for trains coming off the
buffalo line at harrisburg
today h3w passed thru milton pa at 115pm it had 2 black ns engines and around
25 cars on the front was a block of older loaded coal hoppers, then a block of
yellowish green gondolas loaded with crushed stone that comes down from
pleasant gap i belive and then a bunch of boxcars
my question is if anyone sees these cars leaving harrisburg could you post as
much info as possible where and what train were they on, also the local H44
brings about 10 boxcars of pulp or paper to moran industries in watsontown and
the emptys are picked up at norry by h3w has anyone noticed hese blocks of cars
as well?
cn provide car numbers etc if that helps. i'm treying to get an idea of
traffic patterns

The Ringling crews have their loadouts down to a fine art: they usually have it
done in about EIGHT hours beyond the show's end, give or take.   During the
final show, as soon as equipment, costumes, supplies etc, are finished with,
they get packed and the wagons taken to the train area.  Usually, the train
can't actually be loaded until the show is nearly over, as the wagons must be
placed in the order with which they need to be unloaded at the next venue.

This jump is on a tight schedule, with only two days between venues.  As soon as
they're loaded, they are dependent on the host railroad (likely NS) to get them
moving quickly so they can arrive in time to set up in Wilkes-Barre. Don't
expect much delay on this jump.

As seen by Ted's Post the last show in Ohio is 7:30PM and by the looks on the
circus website it takes about 2 to 3 hours per show. Does anyone know how long
it takes to load up the train.
