(I hope I am remembering the story correctly) used to have something where she helped out children of inmates in I believe it was Nepal. If a woman has a child and is imprisioned the children must go with her to prison. They were not being schooled at all. It has been some time since I have spoken with her.
Also I have a friend that goes to Nepal often...she might be able to help you set things up over there as well. I will contact her and see if she can help you with connections over there.
Great story Derek! I will keep my ear open for opportunities. Also maybe check out The Generation Project, they are a few U of M students who started this non-profit. It's a really cool concept, you could probably connect with them. They are still on campus as far as I am aware. They won the Ideablob votes sometime this early fall.
Good luck and keep me updated! I wont be at LA2M today, I got sick last night and don't want to get anyone else sick before the holidays. So, Merry Christmas and we'll chat soon!!

Dear A2B3 and Connect Ann Arbor:
Amy (my wife) and I are starting a non-profit to help fund education in Nepal. On our recent trip there we realized how a little money can make such a difference. One girl who we met couldn't afford to go to any more college because her father died, and her family had no money. When I asked her how much tuition was to the local college she said 500 rupees per month. That's only $5 US to pay for her college tuition. That is nothing in the US. So we already started a fund to support her through college. This fund will help disadvantaged and poor girls continue their education in the Chitwan region of Nepal.
The non-profit we are starting will also help fund a program that has already begun in Nepal through the research UM is doing there. The research showed that poor kids were dropping out of school at very high rates. It seems the poor kids had nobody at home to help them with their homework, and they were embarrassed to not know the answers in school. My friends at ISR started a tutoring program that has had amazing results. They pay teachers at 10 sites in Nepal to come in early and help the poor kids w/ their school. Now these same kids that were dropping out are often at the tops of their class. It works. So the Education non-profit will help expand this program in Nepal, the US and any country who needs it.
It made me appreciate what we have in the US, because the Nepali people have very little. They are happy. And they all want a good life. So education is at the core of what we can do to help.
Would someone please point me to a local contact who can help with starting this non-profit? I have never done something like this before. I think New.org helps with this, but if you have a direct connect it would save me time. Thx.

Dear Ann Arbor Friends. If you have a moment consider voting for this cause. This was sent along by Catherine Juon to me this afternoon. Voting ends tonight.
In recent months, the states have been competing with each other regarding which state has the best State Tourism Web Site. I am pleased to report we are down the finals, and it's Michigan (www.michigan.org) vs. Virginia (www.virginia.org). However, at this hour, Virginia is leading in this competition.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need all Michigan supporters to vote for our site. Prevailing in this competition will give us yet another "best" we can trumpet -- like the fact that michigan.org already attracts more web users than any other state tourism web site.
Therefore, I have two requests today:
That you click on the link below and vote for Michigan! (click on the circle next to Michigan and then click on "vote") http://traveltrendreport.blogspot.com/
Just as important, that you forward this request to all of your friends, family, co-workers, business contacts and other email lists of Michigan supporters.
We need a massive grass roots turn out to win this. Voting will end at midnight tonight, Friday, August 8th, so time is of the essence! Thanks in advance for your help with this!

Tomorrow is the Lunch Ann Arbor Marketing at Eastern Flame from 11:45 - 1:00 PM. Eastern Flame is located at Ashley and Liberty. There are lunch specials for LA2M attendees.
LA2M is for all marketing folks to come out, get to know eachother, and share new ideas related to marketing, branding, advertising, internet marketing and more. A topic for tomorrow's lunch was proposed by one of our members Dee Davey. Dee's profile on Linkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/2/3a4/260
Topic for tomorrow:
To PR or not to PR, that is the question….Dee recently attended two presentations on PR (public relations) and heard two opposing opinions on sending Press Releases. One presenter emphasized the importance of ensuring a press release is “relevant and timely” and not just sent a release for the sake of it. An opposing view was suggested by another local speaker and the audience was provided a list of “55 reasons to send a press release”. So, Dee's question to La2M for Wednesday’s lunch is… to PR or not to PR, that is Dee’s question.
My name is Chastity Dotson. I have never been a person who sits around and waits for an opportunity. In this business, you will get tired of standing in line waiting for that dream role or for that matter the opportunity to audition for that dream role. I decided a long time ago that the best way to get the roles I wanted was to create them.Since then I have written and performed six one-woman shows and was invited to play at the renowned Public Theater in New York City for Danny Hoch’s Hip Hop Theater Festival.
Other solo pieces include: “Little Book of Battles.” At CASA 0101 in Los Angeles ."Interviews with the Clown" which Premiered at Primary Stages Theater in New York City, "The Eve Before Sera" at the Etcetera Theater in London, England, and "The Great American Cowboy Hero" at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica.
AND THE REVIEWERS SAY…
“Chastity Dotson is an actor possessed. Her hyper-political, hypnotic solo show shape-shifts her through a battalion of diverse and dazzlingly realized characters in her multifaceted and breathtaking portrayals”…

Startup Weekend Coming to Ann Arbor, June 20 – 22, 2008
“The Event that was huge in Portland, San Francisco, Boston, New York is now coming to Ann Arbor.”
Ann Arbor, MI June 10, 2008 – Ann Arbor Startup Weekend, June 20 – 22 in Ann Arbor will gather 50 – 75 bright, talented people from the region to develop and launch 5 – 7 NEW companies in a single marathon weekend.
Ann Arbor Startup Weekend is a practical, hands-on learning experience on how to start a business. It recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to build not just a company, but enable participants to learn new skills and create new relationships within the local Ann Arbor community.
Startup Weekend will be held at the Liberty Square office space, lower level (510 E. Washington in downtown Ann Arbor.)Startup Weekend takes place the weekend of June 20 -22. Friday 6p-11p, Saturday 9a-11p, Sunday 9a-9p
Friday night, the group will vote on ideas and choose the top dozen or so. After that, each participant will choose an idea/team to work on and spend the rest of the weekend putting everything together for a launch. When all is said and done, each participant will be a co-founder with an ownership interest in at least one honest-to-goodness startup.
"Startup Weekend has been huge in cities like San Francisco, Portland and Boston. Now it's Ann Arbor's turn. We have a large pool of smart people doing interesting things. I can't wait to see what types of companies this group will launch, as well as the community they'll create. It's very exciting to see this happening at a grassroots level." Laura Fisher, owner Mitten Artworks and organizer of Startup Weekend Ann Arbor.
Startup Weekend is not just another event, it’s an experience.
Hi all! The posting for the acting class reminded me there may be some interest within this group for the Google AdWords Success workshop we're running on Friday of this week. Here's a little blurb about it:
Friday, June 13, 9:00-4:30 pm. Cost: $675.
At Pure Visibility we understand that AdWords accounts are very easy to set up and use, but difficult to master. At the end of the day, regardless of your skill level, the challenges in Pay Per Click are the same:
How do I plan my strategy?
How can I measure success?
Do I know the latest techniques for increasing visitors, sales, and the bottom line?
How do I get the most out of my limited management time while still getting the most out of my account?
This is a great opportunity to learn winning, proven principles that will help you generate more business online, regardless of whether you're a beginner who hasn't set up an AdWords account, or a seasoned professional with years of experience.
If AdWords is all new to you, we suggest attending our free Donuts and Search Marketing session held once a month at Pure Visibility. The next available session is Friday, July 25 from 8:30am to 10:00am.
