Under the direction of the Monroe County Public Library Director, the
Associate Director serves as a member of the administrative team,
assumes responsibility for public service operations, serves as manager
in charge when the Director is unavailable, and coordinates other
initiatives as assigned.
Duties:
1. Responsible for the Library's public service strategy.
2. Serves on the Library's administrative team; advocates for
public services as participant in strategic and annual service and
budget planning, development of library policies and processes; and
provides advice, feedback and assistance to the Director. (E)
3. Directly supervises managers of Adult Services, Children's
Services, Circulation, Collection Services, Community Outreach,
Ellettsville Branch, Facilities, and Information Services departments.
Participates in hiring, training, coaching, and evaluating department
managers. Works with managers to achieve uniform levels of service.
Facilitates process improvement initiatives and programs to optimize
overall library service operations. (E)
4. Participates in gathering, preparing, and presenting data on
library performance to support decision making and reporting to the
Library Board and other local, state and national agencies. (E)
5. Leads facilities improvements, including working with
architects and coordinating remodeling and new construction.
6. Performs various administrative duties, including representing
the library in the community and participating in and leading meetings.
7. Keeps in touch with library trends, developments, and new
technology.
8. Performs other functions as necessary to insure effective and
smooth continuity of the operations of the library.
Requirements:
1. Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA
accredited college or university required.
2. Seven years of related professional experience, including five
years of managerial experience, required.
3. In-depth knowledge of technical services, information systems,
and facilities management.
4. Knowledge of computer applications.
5. Demonstrated interpersonal skills for supervising other
employees and interacting with other staff, patrons, and outside
contacts.
6. Proven strong analytical, problem-solving, and conflict
resolution skills.
7. Good managerial and leadership skills.
8. Good organizational and time management skills.
9. Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills.

This is a professional librarian position which provides public
information and outreach services including, but not limited to
developing, promoting and coordinating programs and services for the
local community at large, with an emphasis on the Hispanic and
Spanish-speaking community.
Duties:
* Outreach and Public Relations: Serves as liaison to community
groups. Develops and maintains community resource file organizations,
agencies and individuals. Conducts tours of the buildings as requested.
Participates in library speaker's bureau. Organizes and implements
outreach programs for the community which include reading programs, book
talks, conducting and arranging tours. Proactively promotes library
services to community organizations, schools, businesses and the
community at large.
* Hispanic Services: Help make library services and programs
accessible to Spanish speakers; identify and coordinate programming for
Spanish speakers that would be of interest to the community; participate
in ongoing networking with agencies that work with the Hispanic
population; create and translate Spanish-language library brochures and
flyers; assist with the creation and promotion of the SCLS Spanish
language web portal; conduct library orientations and tours and speak to
community groups about library services and programs; plan library
programs, displays and exhibits.
* Promotes the understanding and use of the library and its
resources. Develops and maintains open communication with other
sections and agencies to facilitate cooperation of library services.
Assists in the creation and dissemination of promotional/informational
materials such as brochures, bibliographies, newsletter and library
column articles, etc. Coordination of press releases. Aids all library
sections in preparation, presentation, and/or promotion of youth and
adult programs. Plans, prepares and implements special programs and
exhibits as needed. Explores opportunities for national-level
programming and related funding, e.g. American Library Association,
author visits, etc.
* Other Professional Functions, Programming, and Public Relations
Work: Promote the understanding and use of the library and its
resources. Interpret objectives, policies and procedures to staff and
public as a front-line staff member. Engage in team development along
with other staff members and volunteers; participate in the development
of goals and objectives staff meetings. Attend local, regional and
state meetings, conferences, workshops to enhance professional skills
and remain current on library issues and trends, as well as technology.
Write articles pertaining to library materials and services for local
news organizations and County departments as required. Provides support
for all library sections, i.e., assistance at service desks as required.

Requirements:
A Master's Degree in Library Science from a college or university
accredited by the American Library Association or enrolled in a MLS/MLIS
program with the ability to obtain a MLS/MLIS within six months of hire.
Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree and enrollment in a MLS/MLIS program
accredited by the American Library Association with the ability to
obtain a MLS/MLIS within four (4) years of appointment for a training
program. The salary of the training program starts at 10% below the
minimum of the pay grade. Note: Those in the training program must

This is a high-level professional position with responsibilities that
include planning, budgeting, directing and supervising the operation of
a branch library. The manager is responsible for the continuing
