There has been some suggestions in the court system that perhaps we don't need
physical libraries--that Lexis, WestLaw, etc. can effectively substitute.

Of course, as Librarians we know that this is not true, but how to articulate it
in ways that will make sense to those outside the profession?

One idea is to point out that it would be very poor stewardship of our
information resources to turn them over to for-profit entities.

Has anyone else faced this question? What are some of the arguments you used?

Thanks! Very interesting site. It sort of
confirmed a gut feeling that I had, which was that any
very large system is likely to be a gulag. Many of
the articles on afpl watch could just as easy refer to
Blohard, I mean Broward, County. Still, their
starting salary sure beats the "L" out of of BCL, and
the area is certainly nicer.

Ask those people who claim online sources would be an effective
substitute if they think they can access the Internet without
electricity, given that there have been disasters such as Katrina
and the outages in St. Louis and New York City. Also ask them if
they think everything related to any case they may be working on is
online. Much of what is online (I speak in this case about nonlegal
materials such as stuff in the popular press; it wouldn't surprise
me if it was applicable to law-related research material as well.)
currently probably won't be available in a few years, plus any real
in-depth material on prominent cases will still be in print.
Reading lengthy materials on a computer screen is a pain in the
backside, plus I, for one, don't really care to handle a lot of
looseleaf materials. Print materials still have a long life ahead
of them.

I have seen this column floating about other fora. It
is a fascinating one-- it has been suggested I (?)
contact the author Gilman directly to ask this
question: where exactly is the 'seller's market' for
academic librarians, that he suggests exists now? I
am not at all sure, however, that I really want to ask
Gilman this-- call me a chicken, perhaps, but some
authors in libraryland have not been known to take
criticism well, and I have, like it or not, a bit of
an unfortunate rep in libraryland. Maybe if someone
would give me a job...

Nobody is going to GIVE you a job. You have to GET a job. There is a
difference.

And I reiterate that you should contact the author of the essay directly. Of
course, don't be confrontational or self-pitying--simply tell your story. Who
knows, he might be able to help you in your search.

DON'T MISS THE DEADLINE!
Publishing Grant for Librarians is Available
The Women's National Book Association sponsors the WNBA/Ann Heidbreder Eastman
Grant, which is available for librarians who are interested in learning about
the relationship between the library and publishing professions.
The WNBA offers a grant of up to $750 for a librarian to take a course or
participate in an institute devoted to aspects of publishing as a profession.
The grant may also provide reimbursement for such study completed within the
past year.
The grant honors Ann Heidbreder Eastman, who was an active and prominent member
of both the WNBA and the American Library Association (ALA). The grant
represents Ann's commitment to education about publishing as well as her support
for communication between librarians and publishers.
Librarians holding a master's degree in library science or its equivalent and
having at least two years of post-master's work experience in a library may
apply. The primary criterion will be the likelihood of career benefit to the
person taking the course.
Applications must be received by November 1, 2006.
For more information and guidelines, visit www.ala.org/work/pubs/Eastman.html or
contact Ray Toler, Grant Administrator, American Library Association, 50 E.

Explain what that difference is. I apply for jobs I
see advertised, that I seem to meet at least minimal
qualifications for. After this, what is left for me
to do but follow the steps the employer gives and hope
he ends up giving me the job?

Or he might get offended, especially if I question,
however politely, the manifestly false claim of there
being a 'seller's market' for academic librarian
employment. I could not mention that, of course, but
he still might feel offended to be contacted. One of
the lies from library school is the notion that
librarians are eager to help library students and
young MLSs move along in their careers. Some yes...
most no, and many hold grudges.

[Wilson, Bruce]

The first thing that comes to mind is to consider how well are you presenting
yourself? The best qualified person won't get the job if he doesn't seem like
someone it would be congenial to work with. How obvious is that great big chip
you seem to be carrying around on your shoulder?

How thoroughly do you research the institutions where the jobs are to suss out
the unstated--even intangible--qualities they are looking for? Do you try to
discover if you have connections (however attenuated) or common interests with
your prospective colleagues? ("Dr. Smith, I was most interested to read your
article in the XYZ journal; I'd like to ask you about such-and-such an aspect of
the topic.")

Network, network, network--keep in touch with other librarians and let them know
that you are looking; and reciprocate--if you see an opening that YOU aren't
qualified for/interested in but might fit someone you know, tell him/her about
it.

AS TO CHIPS ON SHOULDERS, I EXPECTED TO GET A JOB, DID
EVERYTHING I WAS TOLD TO DO IN LIBRARY SCHOOL, AND
HAVE APPLIED TO THOUSANDS OF LIBRARIES IN ALMOST SIX
YEARS. I HAVE A PHD, SO I THOUGHT THAT WOULD INCREASE
