They both walked in with CINAHL print-outs, looking for very sophisticated
biotech/med journals in our public library.
The student Friday attends community college here (8 miles away) and
didn't understand why we couldn't set up proxy server for her on one of
the library machines, to get article text, if we didn't have the high-end
medical journals in our collection? But she was glad to learn the
excellent! hospital library..4 miles away...allows the public access to
their collection.
The student this morning is doing distance learning with school in another
state. She was aware there were probably remote databases but didn't know
how to connect to them. Printed off the 3pp list of what her school
offers and explained how to connect from home. Told her about the
hospital library, too.
Both got our business card, our remote services page, carte blanche
invitation to use our e-ref service, quick overview of EBSCO HealthSource
Academic/Nursing .. but/and encouragement to use the rich resources their
schools offer.
And the college student who came in later this morning needed lit
crit..showed him CLC, MLA, etc.
Have we made academic libraries overwhelming imponderables?! How much VR
time is being spent coaching patrons through the basics of what's
available to them?
