Off Topic Posting
Sometimes off topic posts can be saintly. Sometimes one cannot believe
one is reading about say medieval saints on a library licensing discussion
group. That happens to be up there as about my favorite of off topic
posts.

A major portion of the interest of this message is the unlikely discussion
group that it is found on, the Liblicense discussion group.

Introduction to Liblicense
<http://www.library.yale.edu/~llicense/intro.shtml>
"Increasingly, university and research libraries are being inundated with
information that has been created in digital format and transmitted and
accessed via computers. As the number of collections in digital formats
increase exponentially, more and more libraries and information providers
are facing a number of unique challenges presented by this relatively new
medium.
Chief among these new challenges is crafting agreements with information
owners that adequately assure libraries will continue to provide users
with comprehensive and timely access to information in digital formats."
This is not a venue where I would expect to find information small or
large about medieval history and I perhaps may be lacking in imagination
in this regard. To put it another way, I do not know where medieval
historians turn to find primary and secondary source material for their
individual research projects and efforts, but I suspect that the
Liblicense discussion group is not on their radar screens.
Patron saints
<http://www.library.yale.edu/~llicense/ListArchives/0311/msg00071.html>
"On various lists, you can find Catherine of Alexandria, Jerome, or
Lawrence listed as the patron saint of librarians. These are at best
semi-official designations and various saints are found over time to have
diverse interests."
This website is listed in the above linked Liblicense message.

Now back to baseball. This post comes from the LawLib list and is another
post in a place where one would least expect to find it. The author of
the post remembered the story but not where he found it so below the post
that is reproduced here with permission is some source citation that I
have dug up. I also add that off topic posts can be a blessing as they
make one aware of tidbits outside of ones daily routine and can serve as a
spice and flavoring for a discussion group. I am not sure that very young
children should be shown this post as Mr Pedini is sharing a very hair
raising situation with his readers, law librarians.

Subject: Baseball Player Shaves For Literacy
Baseball players have big heads, big salaries, and sometimes big hearts.
Johnny Damon, the Red Sox' hirsute center fielder (think Kurt Russel in
The Thing) is shaving off his beard sometime today as an act of charity.
The Gillette Company has reportedly offered $15,000 (or what Johnny D.
makes in about 3 innings) towards a literacy program for Boston public
libraries if he shaves off a full beard he has cultivated since the
off-season. The program is geared towards making sure kids can read by
the time they reach the third grade. The money will also go towards a
program that helps students who do their homework at the library.
Damon, who also sports hair well below his ears, claims he will get no
compensation for removing his facial hair.
In a sport where players charge for autographs, dope their bats and
blind each other with their bling-bling, this is a rare act of
selflessness.

Damon happy to be in a shave situation

Johnny Damon's loss will be Boston schoolkids' gain.
He won't be succumbing to a full Samson - chopping hair and beard -
but next week Damon will get a full-face shave, courtesy of Gillette. In
turn, the South Boston razor giant will convert Damon's shorn whiskers
into a $15,000 donation to the children's reading and tutoring programs of
the Boston Public Library system.
``Gillette's pitching in and we're going to help out Boston's public
libraries,'' Damon said before last night's 5-3 win over the Cleveland
Indians [stats, schedule] at Fenway Park. ``It's all going for a great
cause.''
As in going, going, gone.
But only the beard, Damon stressed. At least for now.
``I don't think the hair's going anywhere,'' he was quick to respond
when asked if he was going to get a haircut along with the shave. ``The
beard's going to go for a while, but the beard can grow back.
``But the hair,'' Damon said, mock seriously, ``that's something
else. I'd be afraid to cut the hair. I'm afraid it wouldn't grow back.''
The shaggy center fielder, whose long, dark tresses and thick beard
have seen him compared to cultural figures ranging from the divine (Jesus
Christ) to the ridiculous (Wolfman), arrived at spring training with hair
that hadn't seen scissors in a year.

Damon says he'll shave the beard to benefit the Boston public libraries'
reading and tutoring programs for youngsters. He says the Boston-based
Gillette Company will provide the funds for the programs.

BOSTON -- Friday was a black day indeed for the fans for whom bearded Red
Sox center fielder Johnny Damon has become something of a cult icon. As of
high noon, Damon's beard was no more.

Johnny Damon Gets A Shave!

The affable outfielder got tongues wagging when he appeared for spring
training this year with shoulder length hair and a shaggy beard, inspiring
scores of fans to appear at games wearing fake beards and wigs. The new
groupies dubbed themselves "Damon Disciples," and some of his teammates
started calling him "Caveman."
Well, the disciples were probably crying in the beards Friday as Damon sat
down to shave the beard for charity -- all part of a Gillette Co.,
publicity stunt to introduce its new battery-powered razor, the M3Power
Razor. About 1,000 people gathered around to watch Damon get shaved in
public at the Prudential Center as cameras rolled, capturing the moment.

This may not be the most profound information you will receive this
weekend, but interest may increase when one learns that there is an
excellent extended discussion regarding how to cite and identify incorrect
sources, the implications of making corrections and the role of style
manuals in such citing. There are some very excellent points here that
will be of great interest to those who teach writers, write themselves or
advise writers. The citation correction discussion follows an extended
discussion of the cafeteria food during the annual conference in
Kalamazoo, Michigan for matters medieval. Of course such a conversation
inevitably turns to a discussion of how to prepare and serve a medieval
feast. These were pleasant changes of fare from the April focus on pigs
eating acorns and nuts and quite a bit of discussion regarding how to
actually get to Kalamazoo; but do not let my humor throw you off; there is
much very interesting and valuable information stored in these archives
for those who care to check them out.
