This is off-topic, but my supervisor recently asked me to look into
scheduling software for the reference desk. We'd need "layers" - we
often have three different kinds of slots (reference desk, backup, and
virtual reference) that needed to be filled at any given hour. We'd like
something that would automatically schedule people by their day and hour
preferences as well as by their schedules (i.e. X works 10-6, Y works
2-10). So far I've been investigating Schedule3W, OfficeTracker, and
WhenToWork - if your place of work uses scheduling software, and/or you
know of one that I haven't listed, could you please contact me off-list?
Thanks much!

Washington State Library did some interesting focus groups to assess what
folks wanted from VR services.

Here's an excerpt from their site about the focus groups: "Between February
25 and March 5, 2002, four focus groups were convened to elicit ideas from
the public about library services, especially relating to electronic
reference. The groups included re-entry workers in Port Angeles, customers
aged 50+ in Bellevue, members of the Hispanic community in Monroe, and
teenagers from multiple locations who met in an online chat room."

Access the full report, including the excellent questions they asked, at:

We stopped our print subscription several years ago when we went with

shelf space we moved our entire CLC and CA collection to the closed
stacks- we will monitor their
usage and eventually they will go too! Deb Berlin/Kelley Library/ Salem, NH

I think it's important that users understand the BIG difference between Google
Print and Google Library (libary is part of Google Print).

+ Google Print: Material direct from Publishers (amount viewed depends on
individual publisher)

Google Library: Material scanned from libraries. If the material is in
copyright only select "snippets" of text will be valuable. UNLESS, it's
public domain material. What date is Google using as a baseline to determine
public domain? From the Google site, "Whether a book is in the public domain
is a complex legal determination; how we will treat books published at
different times is less complex. For users in the United States, Google Print
treats all books published after 1922 as protected by copyright, except for
books to which no copyright was attached in the first instance."

Also, worth noting that Google "Library" material WILL have a link to
determine if the book is available via OCLC Worldcat (can libraries afford
many ILL requests?) New books (Google Print) WILL NOT have a link to see if a

http://print.google.com/googleprint/screenshots.html#excerpt

What I was sad to see is that there was NO mention in the USA Today article of
Amazon's wonderful "Search Inside the Book" (around before Google Print)
program in the USA Today article. It not only offers materials direct from
publishers but also LOTS of interesting information about many books
(including reading level), key phrases, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a brief look at one example from Amazon Search Inside the Book:

Although almost all talk about search and online retrieval these days focuses
on Google, MANY other companies both big and small are doing very exciting
things.

A recent conversation on the list about Google Print and Amazon's Search
Inside the Book (SITB) reminded me to put up a post about a great set of
"value added" features, Amazon's Search Inside the Book provides for free.

As you know, SITB (around before Google Print) provides searchable versions of
books (provided by the publishers) in the Amazon.com catalog. The amount you
can view online is determined by the publisher.

Now, to the cool features.

Many, but hardly all books, available via SITB, have extra "value added" data
associated with them.

Let's take a look.

Here's a search for "Where the Wild Things Are"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-2656351-9980803

Ok, the book appears on the results list and it's one available via SITB.
Cool!

Click.

Now, you're on the Amazon entry page for the title.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060254920/

Now, the exciting part.

Place your cursor on the cover art.

An "Inside the Book" box should appear.

This box offers lots of features.

1) A concordance
A list of the 100 most used words in the books. Click the term and see where
it appears in the book.

2) Text Stats including:
Readability using the
Fog Index
The Flesch Index
and the Flesch Kincaid Index

Complexity
Number of Characters, Words, Sentences

+ and a few "fun" stats

You'll also see that 294 other books in Amazon.com database, cite "Where the
Wild Things Are."

More info along with the ability to search for specific words in the book.

Caveats: Not all of these features are available for all SITB books. Features
vary buy book. However, I've noticed that many books for children have these
features.

Finally, say you want or need to keyword search words in specific books. It's
impossible via the Amazon.com interface HOWEVER it is very possible via
Amazon.com multifacted web search tool named A9.com
http://www.a9.com

Here you can search all sorts of databases (the default web database is
Google) and also specific words and phrases found in SITB books.

Simply, go to A9 and make sure to select the "books" search box. Enter your
terms and go. A link will take you directly to the page where the word(s)
appear.

Bow, these features are not just for lit for children

Here's Hawking's:
"A Brief History of Time : The Updated and Expanded Tenth Anniversary Edition
(Paperback)"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553380168/

Hover over cover art and you'll find a bunch of feature

Also, look directly below the title and author name. You'll spot some words.
Some labeled: "SIPs" others labeled "CAPs"
What are they?

SIP's=Statistically Improbable Phrases
"Amazon.com's Statistically Improbable Phrases, or "SIPs", are the most
distinctive phrases in the text of books in the Search Inside!™ program. To
identify SIPs, our computers scan the text of all books in the Search Inside!
program. If they find a phrase that occurs a large number of times in a
particular book relative to all Search Inside! books, that phrase is a SIP in
that book."

CAPS=Amazon.com Capitalized Phrases
Capitalized Phrases, or "CAPs", are people, places, events, or important
topics mentioned frequently in a book. Along with our Statistically
Improbable Phrases, Capitalized Phrases give you a quick glimpse into a
book's contents...For example, if you're looking at a Sherlock Holmes
mystery, you can click on "Professor Moriarty" to see a list of books that
feature or mention Holmes's nemesis. You can then browse a few pages from the
books or click on the A9.com search link to read more about him."

Btw, the sentence listed before the SIP's and CAP's is the first line of the
book.

Have fun!

cheers,
gary

Hello everyone,

I've just received a chat at our reference desk from a library in the UK.
A Ms. Cathy Fawcett, affiliated with the Grangetown Library (of Redcar &
Cleveland - eastern coast of the UK) is hoping to touch base with a library
in the United States that has a junior/teen reading group that would like
to link up with the Grangetown Library junior/teen reading group.

If your library has such a group and this sounds interesting, please
contact the Grangetown Library at:

grangetown_library@...

If you are a member of a young adult services listserv and would be kind
enough to pass this along, I'm sure that Ms. Fawcett would be appreciative.

Many thanks indeed to those who responded so quickly to my request.

This was the Launch Day for the English "Enquire" Service so I was keen to
answer all the enquiries that our authority accepted during the morning's
launch. I don't yet know how many queries the Enquire Launch Team took on over
the course of the morning, but this was one that I accessed that I could not
answer straight away. I had told the customer that I would take the query
off-line (as we can do) and send a reply as soon as I could. She had heard about
the "Human Book Library" initiative on the UK radio and had gone to her local
library. Although this library could not answer the enquiry, the staff there had
suggested the Enquire Service! And wasn't I the lucky one!!!
Thanks to Digi-ref the case is solved and I can return to more mundane tasks
like the Reference Book orders - and chocolate! Very many thanks indeed.

I am appending the answers for your interest!

Many thanks again

It's a library in Sweden:

"The city library in Malmo, Sweden, third-largest city, will let curious
visitors check out living people for a 45-minute chat in a project meant to tear
down prejudices about different religions, nationalities, or professions. The
project, called Living Library, was introduced at Denmark Roskilde Festival in
2000, librarian Catharina Noren said. It has since been tried at a Copenhagen
library as well as in Norway, Portugal, and Hungary."

Dear Elizabeth,
I have read about an initiative in Drenthe (the Netherlands, May 2005), called
"De Mensenbieb" [= The Human Library]: The "mensenbieb" is a bus which is parked
on a central spot during festivals. The bus contains a number of people "on
loan" (a varied bunch of people, young and old, native Dutch and from ethnic
minorities) with whom you can have a chat. Over a cup of coffee or tea, people
get acquainted and learn about each other. The main purpose is to fight
prejudices. http://www.mensenbieb.nl/ [unfortunately only in Dutch]
A similar initiative was announced by the public library in Almelo (also in the
Netherlands) in September 2005. The librarian got the idea from the "Living
Library" project, explained by Ulla Brohed of the library in Malmö (Sweden): see
http://www.thelocal.se/article.php?ID=1899&date=20050816 [fortunately in
English].

The closest to the 'Human Library Book' initiative you described, is a novel
scheme to be set out by a library in Holland where people can 'borrow' other
people from the library and have an hour's chat to get to know them. Do refer
to this article below covered in the 25th August 2005 Daily Telegraph, for
further information.
We are not aware of this iniative being available in the UK at present.

LIBRARIES
Library that lets you take out people who are left on the shelf
A public library in Holland has been swamped with queries after unveiling plans
to 'lend out' living people, including homosexuals, drug addicts, asylum
seekers, gipsies and the physically handicapped. The volunteers will be
borrowed by users of the library, in Almelo, who can take them to a cafeteria,
and ask them questions for up to an hour. The scheme is designed to break down
barriers and combat prejudice.

Please excuse any cross-postings:

The Library of Congress is pleased to announce that the following American
Memory collections have been redesigned and updated:

I."Tending the Commons: Folklife and Landscape in Southern West Virginia"
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cmnshtml/cmnshome.html.
From the Library's American Folklife Center: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/.
Collection handle: http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.afc/collafc.af000003

II. "Documents from the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention,
1774-1789" http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/continental/.
From the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division:

I. "Tending the Commons: Folklife and Landscape in Southern West Virginia"
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cmnshtml/cmnshome.html , produced by the Library's
American Folklife Center: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/. Collection handle:
http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.afc/collafc.af000003

New audio recordings and manuscript items have been added to the Web site, along
with a special presentation entitled "Cultural Landscapes at the Headwaters of
the Big Coal River Valley." The Web site now includes 718 sound recordings,
1,256 photographs, 10 manuscripts, and 7 special presentations.

The presentation documents traditional uses of the mountains in Southern West
Virginia's Big Coal River Valley. Functioning as a de facto commons, the
mountains have supported a way of life that for many generations has entailed
hunting, gathering, and subsistence gardening, as well as coal mining and
timbering. The online collection includes extensive interviews on native forest
species and the seasonal round of traditional harvesting (including summer
berries and fish; and fall nuts, roots such as ginseng, fruits, and game) and
documents community cultural events such as storytelling, baptisms in the river,
cemetery customs, and the spring "ramp" feasts using the wild leek native to the
region. Interpretive texts outline the social, historical, economic,
environmental, and cultural contexts of community life, while a series of maps
and a diagram depicting the seasonal round of community activities provide
special access to collection materials.

II. "Documents from the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention,
1774-1789" http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/continental/ from the
Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division:
http://www.loc.gov/rr/rarebook/. Collection handle:
http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.rbc/collrbc.rb000008

The Library has scanned all available broadsides in full color and has upgraded
the text encoding and programming code to bring it in line with current
practices.

The Continental Congress Broadside Collection (253 titles) and the
Constitutional Convention Broadside Collection (21 titles) contain 274 documents
relating to the work of Congress and the drafting and ratification of the
Constitution. Items include extracts of the journals of Congress, resolutions,
proclamations, committee reports, treaties, and early printed versions of the
United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Most broadsides
are one page in length; others range from 1 to 28 pages. A number of these items
contain manuscript annotations not recorded elsewhere that offer insight into
the delicate process of creating consensus. In many cases, multiple copies
bearing manuscript annotations are available to compare and contrast.

Please submit questions about either of these collections to the American Memory
"Ask A Librarian" Web form: http://www.loc.gov/rr/askalib/ask-memory.html.

Could you please define "Central Reference Expert System"? If you are
referring to something like a knowledge database, that's one of the
basic features of QuestionPoint and there are many opinions about its
use...

Subject: [DIG_REF] Query re. Web Site Redesign/Design (Small Scale Projects) for Non-Profits
diane@...
Send Email Send Email

Dear Colleagues,
I'm teaching Web Design and Construction for Organizations - an
introduction to Web Design, XHTML, CSS etc. for UIUC LEEP this
spring. I require each student to work with a 'client' to redesign
an existing Web site for a non-profit organization. In the past, I
relied on my contacts with colleagues to put together a list of
choices for my students. This spring I find that all the projects I
had on my list have been chosen and I need some new folks to add.

These are Library School students working through Distance Learning
who are just beginning with Web Design, XHTML etc. What we are
looking for is small scale redesign projects, e.g., one area of a
larger site - or a new design for a special patron group. I cannot
guarantee that any of my students will choose your projects. Also,
some larger scale projects, the students may form teams to work on
them. Students may also choose the library they currently work in or
a non-profit organization known to them to work with. So, if you
would like to be on the list of projects for my students to consider
please email me with the following information:

1. Contact person with email and telephone numbers (this would be the
'client' that students are expected to interview and interact with
cooperatively to come up with design options)
2. The URL of the current Web site (if there is one - otherwise URL
of the overall site associated with your organization)
3. Brief description of what you would like to have done with the site.

I will respond to you whether your project fits our scope in terms of
time and expertise of students and verify you want to be on the list.

Thank you!
Di

We are studying options for "Centralized Reference" to supplement regular
in-library reference service. In particular I am gathering information on
library use of expert systems that may be utilized entirely or as part of this
type of service, also to store questions asked by patrons and the answer
provided, as a time saving device when that question is asked again.

Thank you for your response.

Diane,

Don't know if this would interest anyone, but I'll send this your way, just in
case....

Here is the URL for Bell Library's recently-launched Distance Learning Web page,
http://rattler.tamucc.edu/distlearn/index.htm. Since you are working with
distance students, it would be useful to get their feedback, suggestions on how
this Web site might be improved, etc.

My name is Denise Landry-Hyde, Reference/Distributed Learning Librarian.
Email: Denise.Landry@...
Phone: (361) 825-2608

We do have to incorporate ADA-compliant measures, and there are also
institutional rules that must be followed. If you end up needing more
information on this, I can provide.

Thanks for the call and the consideration,

Denise
