We invite papers for a Minitrack on Genres of Digital Documents.
Document genres are communicative actions with a socially recognized
communicative purpose and common aspects of form (such as
newsletters, FAQs, and homepages). Such genres are situated in
complex communicative practices; they are anchored in specific
institutions and processes and can be equally applicable to physical
as well as electronic documents. Recognizing the genre of a document
is useful because it makes communications more easily recognizable
and understandable by recipients and more easily generated by
senders. Thus, the study of genres, besides enhancing our
understanding of information searching and use, may also provide
insights into organizational or community structures.
As well, it is becoming increasingly clear that the successful use of
digital media requires the emergence of new or transformed genres of
digital communication. In a digital environment, documents have
functionality as well as form and content, but in many ways the
contextual clues by which functionality can be ascertained are
missing. For this reason, genre provides a certain fixity in
communication and becomes increasingly important in providing users a
resource for the interpretation of the content, role, and function of
a digital document.

At Midwinter in San Diego the MARS Ad Hoc Committee on Virtual Reference
Guidelines approved a final draft of the Guidelines for Implementing and
Maintaining Virtual Reference Services.
The Guidelines still need review/action by the MARS Executive Committee, and
RUSA Standards and Guidelines. We hope that the Guidelines will be slated
for final action at the RUSA Board meeting this summer in Orlando.

Resolution Regarding Journal Pricing and Marketing Practices

Faculty Senate Approves Measure Targeting For-Profit Journal Publishers
<http://www.stanford.edu/dept/news/pr/04/journals225.html>
The Faculty Senate endorsed the latest attempt by the university's library
system to take a stand against for-profit journal publishers that it says
engage in exorbitant pricing practices.
The senate last week approved a motion on a divided voice vote that
encourages libraries to cancel some costly journal subscriptions and
faculty to withhold articles and reviews from publishers who engage in
questionable pricing practices. The motion singled out publishing giant
Elsevier as deserving special attention.
"We're not doing this to position ourselves to negotiate more effectively
with Elsevier," said University Librarian Michael Keller. "We're doing
this to change the whole scene. We're trying to change the fundamental
nature of scholarly communication in the journal industry."
Journal costs have skyrocketed in recent years while many university
library budgets have shrunk, putting librarians in the uncomfortable
position of having to reduce or cancel subscriptions to some journals
valued by academics. At the same time, some for-profit publishers, like
Elsevier, started grouping popular journals together with less-desirable
ones in "big deal" subscription plans at higher prices, knowing most
libraries would go along with the ploy, Keller said.
A spokesman for Elsevier declined to comment, saying the company had not
had a chance to review the resolution.

Discretion is fine; however, the responsibility for using a department
password is within that deot and institution. That does not preclude
informing readers on a list that they need to be registered users.

You have to be very careful with a department subscription though. If
one
person changes the password and doesn't tell the others what it is, then
all access for the department is lost.

Dear DIG-REF Colleagues:
The charter issue of Journal of Library & Information Services in Distance
Learning is now available.
Published by Haworth Press, Inc., JLISDL is the first commercially
published journal to specifically address the issues and concerns of
librarians and information specialists in the rapidly growing field of
distance learning. The journal is a peer-reviewed quarterly publication,
providing readers with substantive articles, essays, reviews, and research
reports.
The Table of Contents for the first issue is as follows:
* Alexander L. Slade, "Research on Library Services for Distance
Learning: An International Perspective"
* Linda Frederiksen, "Beyond the Extended Campus Library: A Brief
History of the Distance Learning Section, ACRL"
* Barton Lessin, Barbara K. Redman, & Nancy A. Wilmes, "A Usage Survey
of Standards and Guidelines Affecting Library Services to Distance
Education Nursing Programs."
* John M Stratton, "An Information Access Model at a Distant Branch
Library"
* Nancy A. Burich, "The Changing Face of Distance Learning:
Implications for Distance Learning Librarians"
In addition, the first issue also contains a book review section edited by
Jerilyn Marshall and an "eServices in Libraries" section edited by Brian
Mikesell, which includes separate reviews for seven different software
packages used for digital reference.
The goal of this journal is to be the primary leader in promoting the
scholarly discourse involved in library and information services in
distance learning. Three issues of the journal have already been sent to
the publisher, and we are currently working on the fourth (and final) issue
for this first volume. Certainly, most libraries are currently under tight
budget constraints, but please consider subscribing to the journal. It is
very reasonably priced at $48/year for individuals and $150/year for
libraries. By supporting this journal, you will help support your
colleagues and our scholarly discourse.
On the journal's Web page, individuals can request a free sample copy of
the first issue and a free table-of-contents e-mail service.
In addition, the Web page provides subscription instructions, as well as
other information about the journal.
To view the journal's Web page, click on the following:
http://www.haworthpress.com/store/product.asp?sku=J192
In addition to considering a subscription to the journal, please also
consider submitting a manuscript for publication.
You too can contribute to our scholarly discourse.
Manuscripts should follow the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style.

Thanks for you interesting comment.
Do you think students will be able to use their cell phones to ask questions
from Question Point as well, as in the case of wireless froogle
we are new comers to Question Point Digital Referance, so I am not that familiar
with how the system works.
Thanks

Pam - Our library currently supports EndNote, but licensing is for
individuals on the campus - that is, it is not on the library's list of
campus-accessible databases. Last year the library evaluated RefWorks, and
we were impressed with the improvements that this web-based product would
allow. The site license was affordably priced, and we made the decision to
purchase as soon as new funding is available. Since there was going to be a
delay, I purchased the product for my own use for a reasonable $70 annual
fee. I can access my personal bibliographies from home or office, and the
learning curve has been minimal - a real plus for me. On two occasions I
contacted the email help desk and received prompt, knowledgeable replies
within 24 hours. I am a very happy camper! Priscilla

A shorter link for the URL above:

"First, searching Google may not be the best answer. In fact, for a
research paper based on other scholarly research, it often is not. Your
professor probably said, "don't use the Internet for your research" in the
instructions for the assignment. He or she is concerned about the validity
of the information you find on the Internet and your ability to ascertain
the authors' credentials.
The General Library provides access to nearly 200 databases. These
databases are online versions of indexes and abstracts that are recognized
resources of information in virtually every field of study at UNM. Yes,
they are on the Internet, but they are acceptable tools for research,
while Google results may not be. Wouldn't you rather look through the 50
articles you're apt to get in a database, rather than the 35,465 possible
answers you'd get in a Google search?
You can see the whole list of databases on the General Library Website
(http://elibrary.unm.edu. Look for the Quicklink to Research Databases and
Indexes. To find out which databases are best for your subject area, use
Database Advisor to find your discipline on that page.
In addition to indexing and abstracting the literature for your field,
more often you'll find that the databases will include the actual articles
your search retrieves."

Just to clarify something...I don't think any versions of the draft
guidelines said "NISA" rather than "NISO". I'm pretty sure it always said
"NISO".
Also, the reference to the "NISO Question/Answer Transaction Protocol" has
been changed as follows in the final draft (the change was made a few weeks
ago):
3.4.12 The service should regularly monitor the development of protocols for
transferring questions between services. See, for example, the NISO
Question/Answer Transaction Protocol:
http://www.niso.org/committees/committ_az.html
The URL was added so that folks would have a pointer to the committee's
work. Of course I just now noticed there's a typo in that URL, so we'll get
it changed ASAP. :-)

Dear Pam,
We offer RefWorks to our student as an alternative or complement to other
products, like EndNote. It is a nice alternative/complement to EndNote
because you can store information online. I always tell students that it is
good to back up citation information with RefWorks even if you use EndNote
because that information can be retrieved from the RefWorks server if one's
hard-drive crashes.

Carol,
It's interesting - I found this web site and showed it to the faculty in
our School of Education. Several faculty had very strong opinions
against the site's accuracy with the APA format. So, I wrote a message
to the Slate Citation Machine's creator, David Warlick, and he responded
... please see the email thread pasted below. It appears to be very
aimed at K-12 audiences (including students and teachers). I think for
that purpose it is great.

Jenifer,
I think the key term here is "amateur", and it is not a comment that I
disagree with. Citation Machine came out of my concern for 21st
century literacy and the ethical issues related to an
information-driven society. My goal is less a comprehensively accurate
citation (though that continues to be an important goal) and more an
easy to use and quick tool that encourages teachers (and students) to
cite the resources they use in an instructional environment.
I'm sure there are other tools available for the professional author,
journalist, or researcher that cover all eventualities of proper
citation. Citation Machine was designed specifically to encourage k-12
teachers to model citations in their worksheets and study guides, and
to invite their students to do the same.
Thanks so much for your note and attention!

Lea,
I'll be darned, you aren't crazy. :-)
That draft is almost a year old. That's probably why I didn't remember the
"NISA" thing. We've gone through several drafts since then, all with "NISO".

Currently a committee at Cleveland State University Library is reviewing
several electronic Citation programs for possible purchase -- such as
RefWorks, ProCITE, EndNote, WriteNote, etc. -- we are more interested in
web-based products -- but several of these we found a bit cumbersome to use
and wonder if such a purchase if worth the money (especially with recent
cutbacks) --
My question to all of you out there is your opinion of these products, who
is really using them, and how easy is the product to use ? We currently
are
reviewing WriteNote (you can apply for a trial) that we would really
appreciate some input.
Thanks !!

Hello all,
I've just read over the ALA MARS Draft Guidelines for Implementing and
Maintaining Virtual Reference Services. The guidelines contain a
reference to the NISA Question/Answer Transaction Protocol (Section
3.4.9: "Observance of the NISA Question/Answer Transaction Protocol for
transferring questions between services is encouraged"). I'm
embarrassed to say that I've been a librarian for 13 years and worked
with virtual reference, yet have never heard of this protocol. Could
someone out there explain it to me, please?
Thank you!

To my understanding NGO stands for Non-Government Organisation.

Thanks a lot for sharing the information. Forgive my ignorance, but what
are
NGOs ?? I'm guessing that the O is for Organization, but I can't figure out
the N and G.

Rather than repost that message on NetGold, I decided to do some searching
in the database and provide some awareness of the value of this tool for
research in the area of human rights as well as for other related subject
fields.
This message may be seen at the URL below in the public archives of the
NetGold discussion group.

If your library is like mine, you periodically struggle trying to put
together a list of current resources to support the need of your community
to access a variety of viewpoints whenever the election season arrives.
In this U.S. presidential election season, we've decided to outsource the
compilation task.

As a colleague noted, the selections from the Librarians' Index to the
Internet "... is more comprehensive, and will keep evolving." Who could ask
for anything better?
Thanks go to Karen Schneider and the incredible cast of LII for providing
these kinds of high quality resources to fill our niche needs.
