perspectives requires well-honed communication, teamwork and
management skills.

When the global teams is also 'virtual' with employees, suppliers and
partners spanning multiple time zones from Asia to the US, Europe and
the Middle East, an even greater level of respect, understanding and
skill is needed for success.

Complimentary appetizers and drinks will be served.

Female CEOs at top Silicon Valley tech firms down to zero
OUSTER AT VMWARE RIPPLES IN VALLEY
The San Jose Mercury News. 07/11/2008
"The number of women chief executives at Silicon Valley's biggest
technology companies dropped to zero this week, with the abrupt
departure of VMware's Diane Greene from the company she co-founded 10
years ago. Greene's ouster may have stemmed from a dispute over
business strategy, rather than her gender, but the news sent a rumble
through the ranks of female managers and others concerned about
diversity in the corner office. Many were disappointed. And many were
speculating about the pool of likely female candidates for future CEO
openings. "The pipeline is light. It's not a pretty picture," said
Wendy Beecham, who runs the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and
Executives, a Palo Alto organization formed to support women in
business in the Bay Area. "The valley's abuzz" about Greene's
departure, said Nicole Woolsey Biggart, dean of the graduate school of
management at the University of California-Davis, which conducts an
annual survey of women executives and directors at the state's biggest
public companies. "It's certainly a moral blow for women who see her
as an aspirational model, whenever someone who is widely admired
leaves a very visible position," Biggart said. The UC-Davis survey and
other studies have repeatedly highlighted the relatively small numbers
of women in senior jobs at large firms. Last year, Santa Clara County
ranked lowest in the state for the number of women in the top ranks of
big firms."

Study Signals Slow Shift Toward VC Diversity
The Wall Street Journal. July 9, 2008
"A first-of-its-kind demographics survey of venture-capital
professionals underscores many of the industry's stereotypes, but
indicates venture firms may be slowly shifting away from the norms.
The National Venture Capital Association and Dow Jones VentureWire
teamed up to survey a group of professionals at U.S.-based venture
capital firms, asking them 20 questions on topics ranging from race,
gender and age to college degrees, investment sector focus and hours
worked…
Venture capital firms, not surprisingly, employ mostly white males. Of
the survey respondents, 88% are white, 75% are male and 66% are white
males. When the results are narrowed to exclude non-investment
professional titles, the percentage of white people stays at 88% but
the percentage of males increases to 86% and the percentage of white
males increases to 77%. However, the data suggests that more diversity
may be on the way as the industry spreads globally. Younger venture
capitalists, while still overwhelmingly white and male, are more
likely to be female, Asian or born outside of the U.S. than older
ones, according to the survey. Of the 179 respondents with less than
five years of experience, 82% are white and 80% are U.S.-born,
compared with 90% and 91%, respectively, for the 347 respondents with
five or more years of experience. A sizeable 84% of non-white
professionals are 44 years of age or younger, compared with 53% of
those who are white."

[San Francisco] Can't Find a Parking Spot? Check Smartphone
The New York Times. July 12, 2008
"…This fall, San Francisco will test 6,000 of its 24,000 metered
parking spaces in the nation's most ambitious trial of a wireless
sensor network that will announce which of the spaces are free at any
moment. Drivers will be alerted to empty parking places either by
displays on street signs, or by looking at maps on screens of their
smartphones. They may even be able to pay for parking by cellphone,
and add to the parking meter from their phones without returning to
the car…SFpark, part of a nearly two-year $95.5 million program
intended to clear the city's arteries, will also make it possible for
the city to adjust parking times and prices. For example, parking
times could be lengthened in the evening to allow for longer visits to
restaurants. The city's planners want to ensure that at any time,
on-street parking is no more than 85 percent occupied. This strategy
is based on research by Mr. Shoup, who has estimated that drivers
searching for curbside parking are responsible for as much of 30
percent of the traffic in central business districts. In one small Los
Angeles business district that he studied over the course of a year,
cars cruising for parking created the equivalent of 38 trips around
the world, burning 47,000 gallons of gasoline and producing 730 tons
of carbon dioxide. To install the market-priced parking system, San
Francisco has used a system devised by Streetline, a small technology
company that has adapted a wireless sensor technology known as "smart
dust" that was pioneered by researchers at the University of
California, Berkeley."

[ www.gottapark.com ]Web site lets drivers reserve parking spots
The San Francisco Chronicle. Monday, July 14, 2008
"Hunting for parking in many San Francisco neighborhoods requires
patience and perseverance, and a tiny car doesn't hurt, either. But a
new Internet startup hopes to ease the pain of finding a place to park
- for a price, of course. The founders of GottaPark describe their Web
site ( www.gottapark.com) as sort of a Craigslist or eBay for parking
spaces - a place where folks with unused parking places can meet up
with those in need of a spot to stash their car for an hour or two, or
a whole day. But those spaces could be in someone's driveway, in an
otherwise empty church parking lot, or in a business lot that has
closed for the day or the weekend. Other parking sites exist on the
Web, but most rely on commercial lots or garages. "Any time you have a
space and you're not in it, we'll list it," said Lauren Kopec, sales
manager for GottaPark. The startup is currently building an inventory
of parking spaces, soliciting mostly driveways in crowded
neighborhoods. Starting Tuesday, drivers can log on to the site, sign
up and reserve parking spots. "We're a broker, if you want to call it
that, of parking spaces," Kopec said. "It's a trading board - a place
where people can find each other.""

Microsoft says Yahoo misrepresenting latest offer
The San Jose Mercury News. 07/14/2008
"Microsoft released a statement today accusing Yahoo of
misrepresenting its latest offer to buy the embattled Sunnyvale
Internet giant. Yahoo had asserted that Microsoft's latest proposal
was contingent on the removal of its top management and the board of
directors - a fact Microsoft denied. Microsoft also said it never
issued a "take it or leave it" ultimatum. The dueling statements
illustrate how frayed the relationship between the two companies has
become as they struggle to hammer out a deal before Yahoo's annual
meeting on August 1. That's when shareholders will decide the outcome
of a proxy battle launched by dissident shareholder Carl Icahn to take
control of Yahoo and force a sale to Microsoft. Meanwhile, Icahn today
provided a detailed accounting of a deal he intends to close with
Microsoft if he is successful. Icahn claimed his deal, which amounts
to a partial sale of the company, was worth $33 per share. Microsoft
previously offered to buy all of Yahoo for $33 per share but withdrew
the offer after Yahoo said its business was worth more. Under Icahn's
deal, Yahoo would sell its search business to Microsoft for $7.7
billion. Shareholders would receive $16.25 per share in a distribution
made up of cash and stock, and Yahoo would be left as a stand-alone
company that provides Internet content. Icahn estimates that $9 of the
distribution would come from the sale of Yahoo's investments in Asian
Internet companies."

In Bid for Yahoo, Microsoft Turns More Aggressive
The New York Times. July 14, 2008
"…The proposal made late last week represents a formal alliance
between Microsoft, whose takeover efforts Yahoo had rebuffed for
months, and the billionaire investor Carl C. Icahn, who is seeking to
unseat Yahoo's board. It also represents a newer, more hostile
approach by Microsoft, in which the software giant is willing to team
up with one of the most aggressive activist shareholders today. Among
its requirements were the replacement of Yahoo's board — and a
response within 24 hours. Microsoft's muscular approach and Yahoo's
strong and quick rejection suggest that investors can expect a
showdown at Yahoo's annual shareholder meeting on Aug. 1. "Microsoft
and Mr. Icahn are trying to dismantle the company and deliver our
search business to Microsoft on terms that would be disadvantageous to
Yahoo stockholders," Roy Bostock, Yahoo's chairman, said in a
statement. "We are prepared to let our stockholders, not Microsoft and
Carl Icahn, decide what is in their best interests and we look forward
to the upcoming vote." Yahoo's board indicated to Microsoft on
Saturday, however, that it was willing to sell the whole company at
$33 a share — a price Microsoft offered in May, but which Yahoo had
rejected."

Microsoft, Icahn go after Yahoo
TEAMING UP TO OUST BOARD OF DIRECTORS; DEAL SEEN AS LIKELY
The San Jose Mercury News. 07/08/2008
"Increasing the pressure on Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang,
Microsoft on Monday effectively threw its support behind financier
Carl Icahn's efforts to unseat Yahoo's board, making a deal between
the two companies much more likely. In a dramatic early morning
announcement, Icahn revealed he has been talking with Microsoft Chief
Executive Steve Ballmer about a prospective sale or partial
acquisition of Yahoo. Microsoft quickly followed with a statement
confirming it would reopen discussions "immediately" if Yahoo's
leadership is replaced. Microsoft's statement "significantly increases
Icahn's chances of taking over the board," concluded UBS Securities
analysts Ben Schachter and Heather Bellini, who predicted "at some
point Microsoft will acquire all of Yahoo." The reason? Now it's not
just Icahn by himself taking potshots at Yahoo's current management.
Despite some polite caveats, Icahn and Microsoft essentially told
Yahoo shareholders that if they want to see a deal with Microsoft,
they should support Icahn's bid to replace Yahoo's board with his own
slate of directors at the Sunnyvale company's annual meeting Aug. 1."

Apple: One million iPhones sold, 10 million App Store downloads in
first weekend
CNET News. July 14, 2008
Despite the outages, shortages, and related hand-wringing associated
with last Friday's iPhone 3G launch and Thursday's release of the
iPhone 2.0 firmware, Apple says there were nevertheless 10 million
downloads from its new App Store in its first weekend of existence.

PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY- By WALTER S. MOSSBERG
Newer, Faster, Cheaper iPhone 3G
Software and Online Store Will Widen Its Versatility,
But There Are Hidden Costs
The Wall Street Journal. July 9, 2008
"…On Friday, Apple is launching a second-generation iPhone, called the
iPhone 3G, which addresses both of those problems, while retaining the
look and feel of the first model's hardware and software… I've been
testing the iPhone 3G for a couple of weeks, and have found that it
mostly keeps its promises. In particular, I found that doing email and
surfing the Internet typically was between three and five times as
fast using AT&T's 3G network as it was with the older AT&T network to
which the first iPhone was limited. The iPhone 3G is hardly the first
phone to run on 3G networks, and it still costs more than some of its
competitors. But overall, I found it to be a more capable version of
an already excellent device. And now that it's open to third-party
programs, the iPhone has a chance to become a true computing platform
with wide versatility. There are two big hidden costs to the new
iPhone's faster speed and lower price tag. First, in my tests, the
iPhone 3G's battery was drained much more quickly in a typical day of
use than the battery on the original iPhone, due to the higher power
demands of 3G networks. This is an especially significant problem
because, unlike most other smart phones, the iPhone has a sealed
battery that can't be replaced with a spare."

Google ventures into virtual reality with 'Lively'
Associated Press. 07/08/2008
"In the latest expansion beyond its main mission of organizing the
world's information, Internet search leader Google hopes to
orchestrate more virtual socializing on the Web. Google introduced a
free service today in which three-dimensional software enables people
to congregate in fantasy rooms and other computer-manufactured
versions of real life. The service, called "Lively," represents
Google's answer to an already well-established site, "Second Life,"
where people deploy animated alter egos known as avatars to navigate
virtual reality. Google thinks "Lively" will encourage even more
people to dive into alternate realities because it isn't tethered to
one Web site like Second Life, and it doesn't cost anything to use.
After installing a small packet of software from lively.com, a user
can enter Lively from other Web sites, like social networking sites
and blogs. Google already has created a Lively application that works
on Facebook.com, one of the Web's hottest hangouts, and is working on
a version suitable for an even larger online social network, News
Corp.'s MySpace.com."

Electronic Arts tries to legitimize Facebook Scrabble
The San Jose Mercury News. 07/07/2008
"The online Scrabble wars heated up Monday with an announcement that
Electronic Arts will launch a licensed version of the game this month
on Facebook, where the unauthorized adaptation called Scrabulous is
thriving. The version from Redwood City-based EA, free for users and
at least initially without advertisements, will be available
"mid-to-later this month," said Chip Lange, general manager for EA
Hasbro Games. Scrabulous, which claims more than 450,000 daily active
users, has become a cause celebre among fans worried that the game
will be shut down because of opposition from rights holders Hasbro and
Mattel. "We consider it to be a clear infringement of our intellectual
property," said Mark Blecher, Hasbro's general manager for digital
media and gaming. Blecher was unable to comment on the exact details
of any legal action by Hasbro; Facebook did not respond immediately to
an e-mail request for comment from the Mercury News. Michael Pachter,
a games industry analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, said Hasbro's
launch of an authorized version of Scrabble might enhance the
company's legal position against Scrabulous, which was created by two
brothers in India, Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla. The New York Times
reported earlier this year that Scrabulous earns about $25,000 a month
from online ads."

Is Google Making Us Stupid?
The Atlantic. July 2008
What the Internet is doing to our brains
"…For me, as for others, the Net is becoming a universal medium, the
conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and
ears and into my mind. The advantages of having immediate access to
such an incredibly rich store of information are many, and they've
been widely described and duly applauded. "The perfect recall of
silicon memory," Wired's Clive Thompson has written, "can be an
enormous boon to thinking." But that boon comes at a price. As the
media theorist Marshall McLuhan pointed out in the 1960s, media are
not just passive channels of information. They supply the stuff of
thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net
seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and
contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the
Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I
was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface
like a guy on a Jet Ski."

Mobile ad company Admob is about to mint money
VentureBeat. July 6th, 2008
"Advertising on mobile phones is a trying market. Americans have been
slow to surf the mobile web, in large part because dominant carriers
have made browsing the web so painful. But one young company, Admob,
is showing impressive results despite all this, according to
interviews and an investigation into the overall ad market. Admob puts
ad banners on mobile web pages run by companies like ESPN, CBS and
Weather Underground. Based on its current performance, the company is
getting gross annual revenues $42 million in revenues, according to
our back-of-the-envelope math. The San Mateo, Calif., company declined
comment on our math, but I'll explain below how I derived it. To
conclude, I'll assume that Admob keeps only a third of the revenue
itself, giving the rest back its publisher clients. This is a
conservative assumption: Its rate card says it keeps 40 percent, but
market analysts say Admob cuts its larger clients a better deal. That
gives Admob about $14 million annually."

WEBWIRE – Friday, July 11, 2008
"SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 2008 – Mobopia Corporation, the creators of
Xuinet™, the industry's first Open Mobile Publishing Network™ and
ACCESS CO., LTD., a global provider of advanced software technologies
to the mobile and beyond-PC markets, today announced their strategic
partnership to create an integrated, open and flexible Widget solution
for delivering a wide variety of rich and engaging content to mobile
phones, worldwide. The partnership will combine Mobopia's Xoe™
rich-media Widget client with ACCESS' NetFront™ Browser, delivering a
completely integrated, open and flexible Widget platform tailored
specifically for mobile devices, available in Q3 of this year. Today,
there are nearly two million Flash developers worldwide with the
potential to create and publish rich content for mobile phones. This
includes most major media companies, creative agencies, advertisers
and individuals. Although several methods for mobile publishing exist,
they are tied to specific platforms or geographies thus impeding the
vast majority of Flash developers from easily delivering their
creations to market."

Mercury News interview: SanDisk CEO helped launch digital revolution
IMMIGRANT HELPED LAUNCH DIGITAL REVOLUTION
The San Jose Mercury News. 07/13/2008
"…Harari and SanDisk recently marked their 20th anniversary,
recognized as trailblazers in the flash memory industry. He and his
company helped launch the digital photography revolution and, through
key partnerships with companies like Toshiba, created standards for a
variety of industries that employ flash memory. As Harari proudly
points out, the same flash memory cards that plug into a slot on a
cell phone can also be plugged into, say, a car navigation system or a
heart defibrillator. SanDisk is ranked as the world's leading supplier
of flash memory - either embedded in other companies' products, or in
SanDisk's signature line of memory cards and Sansa MP3 players.
Harari, an Israeli immigrant, may himself be regarded as a Silicon
Valley prototype, combining his expertise in solid-state physics with
entrepreneurial persistence. Visits to Sears, he said, had him
dabbling in prototypes for new fishing rods, flea collars and
screwdrivers."
