No ID Needed When You Purchase With Credit   Message List

You may think that credit cards can be a big headache if they aren¢t used
properly.  You may know this either by personal experience or because you are a
very informed consumer.  Credit cards can help your credit history and allow you
to acquire items and services in a fast and convenient manner.  But credit cards
can also drive you directly into a financial catastrophe.  One of the most
common problems with credit cards, besides debt, is identity theft.  The
following information relates to this issue, so read it and enhance your credit
card knowledge.
Are retailers required to ask for a customer¢s ID when they pay with credit
cards?
The answer is no.  According to Liz Pulliam Weston from MSNMoney.com, merchant¢s
agreements with Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover forbid them from
asking the customer for an ID.
You may ask how this can be good for consumers.  Well, even though prohibiting
merchants from asking you for your ID may seem risky (since anyone may use your
credit card) it can actually protect you.
How? When a merchant asks you for your ID, they have immediate access to your
personal information.  Credit card companies require merchants to only ask for
your signature to approve the purchase without the need of any further
documentation.  Credit card companies want to prevent consumers from disclosing
their personal information to merchants.
As you can see, this can be good for you.  Nonetheless, there are other ways in
which you can become a victim of credit card fraud, so you must be careful.
The good news is that if your credit card is ever stolen, and the thief uses it
to pay for a $2,500 shopping spree, you are only responsible for the first $50.
To avoid any problems, check your credit regularly.  You can ask for your free
credit report and report any inconsistencies.
