Here is a guide on how to start a career in SAP Materials
Management (MM) Module. Learn how and where to get the training.
SAP software in a nutshell is composed of three main functional
areas, Financials, Logistics, and Human Capital Management. Under
each one of these functional areas there are several sub-modules,
which record and compute the day-to-day transactions of an
enterprise.  The data entered in the system is immediately
available to all relevant modules for reporting or for further
processing. This level of integration is possible because all
modules use the same RDBMS, an ingenious database design known as
Relational Database Management System.  You might never hear the
end of why SAP is so popular, but in my opinion it is because
decision makers have the most current reports to take effective
decisions for strategic steering of the enterprise. After all it
is this value that makes companies invests millions of dollars to
use SAP as their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.

My name is Varsha Vilankar and I am writing this article on the
request of LearnSAP.com ( a leading and respected SAP training
school ) to help individuals understand the roles and
responsibilities of a SAP MM configuration consultant. Having
worked on several end-to-end projects in a variety of industries
I have compiled a checklist, which I believe will be useful to
ensure a successful launch of a career in SAP Materials
Management module.  

SAP Materials Management covers all tasks within the supply
chain; including consumption based planning, purchasing, vendor
evaluation and invoice verification. It also includes inventory,
production planning, and warehouse management.  

On job as a configuration consultant you will be expected to
perform configuration work as per the blue print document.
Usually there are several small and large configuration teams
working on different parts of the business process. Everyone on
the implementation project is supposed to complete his or her
work on a very closely watched timeline. Its very much like a
production line, the crew down the line cannot hang the door on
the car frame until you put the door together and hand it to
them.

I was an ABAPer before I became an SAP MM consultant. ABAP is the
proprietary computer programming language, which SAP has
developed to write all of its applications in. As a programmer I
worked with functional consultants from all modules, but
Materials Management always fascinated me the most. So I decided
that as a natural progression of my career when it is time, I
would work in MM as a techno-functional consultant.

Configuration is fun, all of the nuts and bolts come together in
this stage of implementation and things begin to take shape.
Stress is in the air and everyone seems to be in hurry and as the
launch date draws closer things only get more exciting and
challenging.

In an Organizational hierarchy of SAP Implementation, Material
management organizational structure includes Plant, Storage
location and Purchasing Organization which are created under a
Company Code. The organizational level Plant, being the key
factor in all of the logistics area. The module has two important
master data - material and vendor.

When I can manage some time away from the stress of a project I
help LearnSAP.com organize and deliver SAP courses for
individuals seeking a career in SAP. I sometimes teach the course
as well but most of the time I train the trainers.  I helped put
together the curriculum and every now and then I keep adding or

It is very important that you practice each procedure several
times.  For this reason the classes are held once a week. The
extra time between classes will give you an opportunity to spend
some quality time working hands-on with the system. At first you
will practice the steps precisely as they are explained to you,
while gradually you would try different variations and make a
detail note of errors when you encounter them. The objective is
that you should be able to recall the solution when you face the
same problem on the job. Seniority in a work environment is
seldom the person's physical age instead it is how many problems
he or she can solve swiftly.  In between classes I am available
via emails, which I check several times a day. However, before
you ask a question make sure it hasn't already been addressed
and resolved over the LearnSAP.com discussion forums.

Should you decide to go to another school, you must demand these
standards. Keep in mind that the tuition is directly related to
the number of students and cost of the instructor. A cheap
tuition could be an indication of low quality, either there are
too many students or the instructor is in-experienced.
Experienced instructors don't come cheap.

Assuming you got quality training the next step will be to make
the resume.  I got my resume done by a professional writer.
Remember resume is a marketing tool and just as you would not
risk marketing your awesome invention don't risk your career
either. If you cannot afford to hire a professional then browse
the software aisle of your local software store for a good resume
building software that would guide you through the process.

Last but not least, you should practice the interview process
with a professional recruiter who can point out flaws (if any)
and suggest remedies. The interview is a carefully engineered
process, which is designed to extract an assortment of answers
for the employer. Usually each question is designed to gather the
breath and depth of your knowledge and experience. Basically, how
much you know and how well you know it. There are points for each
question and the candidate who gets the most points gets the job.

to help me reach my targets and I can appreciate your anxiety as
well. After all changing careers is not an easy task by any

Want more effective communication skills? Here are five effective
communication skills tips to remember:

(1) Apply ALL the tools of communication -- not just the words.
Your image and the way you are seen by others, your attitude,
posture and tone of voice all combine to communicate for you.
Some studies show these factors convey more real meaning than the
actual words you use. Effective communication skills require
using these tools.

(2) Understand the critical role that "human needs" play in the
effectiveness of your communication. Your success will depend, in
large part, on the degree to which your communication agrees with
or threatens those needs -- things like the "basics" of food,
shelter and clothing, as well as safety, belonging, ego-status
and self-actualization -- all terms many of us learned in
Psychology 101, but might have long forgotten. Failing to take
them into account can severely hamper effective communication
skills.

(3) Plan your communication. It doesn't matter whether you're
talking to 1 person or 100. If your communication is important,
then it is worth thinking it through and doing it right. Consider
both what you want to accomplish and the needs and interests of
the others.

LEVERAGE YOUR COMMUNICATION RESOURCES/REPEAT/LIMIT

(4) Send your message in a way that leverages your verbal and
non-verbal resources -- such as clear enunciation,
message-punctuating hand gestures and facial expressions. Again,
these additional communication tools can add real meaning to and
understanding of what you are saying. One of the most effective
tools for effective communication is repetition. The "three
tells" approach is a powerful way to accomplish this: (1) Tell
them what you're going to tell them. (2) Tell them. (3) Tell
them what you told them. Don't try to make one communication do
too much. One major "take away" message and two or three
support points is a good rule of thumb.

(5) Explain and encourage in order to persuade. If you are
seeking action or an attitude change on the part of the other
person, be sure to explain and back up what you are saying. Think
of ways to make it easy for the other person to agree to do what
you want.

You never know whom you will meet when you are flying. You can
learn a lot from a stranger, if you are open to having a
conversation and enjoy the art of listening. Case in point, on a
recent flight, I found myself sitting next to a man who was
returning from Florida to Michigan. He was an entrepreneur, a
successful entrepreneur, a few times over. He was able to retire
early and was so effective at starting businesses; he was
continuing to help others create small businesses, and enjoying
it.

When I asked him what he credited for his success. He said that
growing up on a farm gave him a hard work ethic. That used to be
a common theme in rural America. I wonder what will replace
"farm living" for the future generations as we see more
movement away from agriculture. And, he felt his college degree
from Michigan was also an asset. I agree, a college degree is
always a good life investment no matter how you use it. Now
pushing 70, it's hard for him to slow down. He loves putting the
pieces together. He is still passionate about business
development and has a lot of experience, knowledge and business
savviness to share.

I transferred planes in Detroit to finish the last leg of my trip
back home. A solider sat down next to me in seat 7-B. The man in
camouflage was returning home after serving a year in the Army
Reserves in Afghanistan. As a dad in his mid 30's, he was hoping
he would make it home in time to see his son play JV basketball
that evening.

Afghanistan…a world away. He said it was overwhelming to be
dropped there, with very little language skill. He had a job to
do and despite the steep learning curve, he did the best job he
could do. He was looking forward to sharing his experience with
high school students who know so little about Afghanistan, just
like me. He would also pick up where he left off on his job
search over a year ago. A year in the active Reserves provided
income after he lost his other job. He certainly has some
additional information to add to his resume.

Two different seat mates, two different stories about making a
living from men who were in different stages of life and with
different skill sets. We landed. Four friends greeted the solider
at the gate. I saw the embraces and a few tears. I had a tear as
well. Thanks you for a job well done, solider. Thank you for
taking a year from your life and your family to serve.

I picked up my luggage. As I drove home, I thought, what a ride.
I felt transformed and humbled by the strangers I met while up in
the air. What did this career coach learn during her flight home?

I learn a lot about the world of work by talking to people.
Hearing from people first hand is the real deal. It's one thing
to read about the workplace, it's another thing to hear about it
from people who are working. Be genuine, be curious, and share in
the dialog. For readers looking for work or considering a career
change, it is about talking to people. Do your research on the
Internet and read articles and publications. Then, contact
someone to talk to them in person or by phone. Do a short
informational meeting to learn more the industry, their position
or a related position, or learn more about what attracted them to
the field. Have a list of prepared questions, but be prepared to
listen and respond. Be flexible with the questions, read the
situation and be ready to have a few questions come back at you.
There is a need for ying and yang in any discussion, so look for
the balance in your exchange.

When opportunity knocks, take a chance to engage a stranger
whether you are up in the air or have both feet on the ground!

Ah, Spring! Time for renewal, regrowth, ReCareer. ReCareer?
What's that about? ReCareering is about finding authentic work
in the second half of life. I decided to learn more about the
process of recareering recently with Richard P. Johnson PhD,
author of ReCareer, Finding Your Authentic Work.

We are still finding ourselves in the aftershock of the recession
of 2008. People are continuing to look for work, create new
opportunities and wait for momentum in the hiring cycle. We know
some positions will return. Others will not. When people find
themselves jobless, perspectives can shift. During the period of
waiting, some have discovered that losing a job can make us
realize that we could, and maybe should, be doing something else.

ReCareering is about finding the right fit. Many of us worked the
first half of our life to "fit" the job description. We worked
the long hours, worked various shifts, drove the long commute and
spent time on the road away from family. We did what we needed to
do to pay bills, pay a mortgage, raise a family, etc. ReCareering
is the process of being selective, being creative, being
fulfilled and being intentional about how you spend your time.

Dr. Johnson believes that second-half of life seekers want
something deeper out of life. "They want more personal purpose,
more meaning, they want to align their personality more clearly,
they want to be more 'on target' with their life. They seek a
nearer connection between their life and the larger world; they
want their efforts to be more socially redeemable." Hmmm, is
that too much for us to ask?

Job change in midlife can present opportunity. The second-half
seeker brings loyalty, equivalent productivity, a better safety
record, a higher work satisfaction level and an appreciation of
the value of work, as compared to younger workers. There are
myths concerning the middle aged and more mature workers. Most of
the myths are attributed to stereotypes and are held by potential
employers and older workers as well. The myths cause the
second-half seeker to focus on what is lost and to dwell on
scarcity thinking.

A typical question that a job seeker in the mid-years often asks
is, how can I find a job doing something else — something I
really enjoy?" Look inward. Answer the question by asking
yourself:

  * What is your current definition of personal success? How does
it compare to how you would define success in younger years?

  * What is your ReCareer dream? What is the fit between your
ReCareer dream and your current resources and personal gifts?

  * What would stop you from moving forward with your recareer
plans?

Whether you are unemployed, non-employed, underemployed or
empty-employed, the benefits of rethinking your career with
recareering might be beneficial. Formulate a plan to find or
create a more fulfilling career. Enlist the help of a career
coach. Seek out the training and connections you will need to be
successful. Finally, surround yourself with positive people who
will support you in your transition.

In April 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin launched Earth
Day. It evolved after seven years of observation, discussion and
planning to bring the environment into the "limelight." Today,
I'm buying bottled water and see our air, ground water, soil,
oceans and glaciers under siege. As we hear more about Going
Green to save the planet, what can we do to Green our Career?
Just like the environment, we cannot take anything for granted in
today's workplace. Keeping our career path intentional and
updated is necessary for career survival and redesign.

In honor of Earth Day, April 22nd, here are some ways to Green
Your Career:

Sustainability: It's can be tough to stay motivated in a career
search, but to persevere and stay intentional with your search
are necessary. Be the glacier, but resist having a "meltdown!"
Remember, looking for work is work. Review your habits and eat
healthy, go for a walk, get fresh air, join a job network group,
hire a coach, etc. It's about survival, and you can do it.
Remember, Darwin's Survival of the Fittest? The village
blacksmith will not return and neither will hand milking or the
keypunch operator. You have to move on, retool and renew. That
means an investment in you and that means time and commitment.

Recycle - Reuse - Renew: When did you update your resume? Did you
ever attend a professional development workshop or use a career
tool that identified your strengths, interests or leadership
style? I have talked with many clients who discounted this kind
of experience and shoved the results in the back of the file
cabinet. In good times, we tend to think, that's nice, so what!
Dig out the results and reread them. The results could be
insightful.

Even if the resume or a performance evaluation is 5-10 years old,
it can be a springboard. Dig it out, dust it off and remember who
you were. It can provide direction as you ask, who am I today?
Reflect, regroup, react. Just like paper or plastic, we can be
"reused." Besides, it's spring and it might be time to spring
clean your files and get reorganized.

Preserve: How can you preserve your identity and integrity? Some
traits are timeless! It is important to "know thyself." Some
workers think, it's over, I'm outdated, too old, too
inexperienced, washed up. Hold on! A solid work ethic, good work
record, willing to learn and retrain still mean something in
today's workplace. We are not "throw-aways" waiting for the
landfill. You are a valued entity in today's workplace, so
market yourself, get grounded and persevere. Now more than ever,
tough times call for a tougher, creative approach for your
search.



Save Energy: Like the new energy-saving light bulbs, they cost
more, but save money and energy in the long run. How about you?
Can you save an employer money and energy in the long run? Are
you a good investment? Can you glow brightly and provide
long-lasting productivity? Think about the value you bring to the
workplace.

Increase Efficiency: In your work search, work smarter and be
efficient. Focus your job search, schedule your calls and keep
accurate records of your applications, follow-ups and responses.
To stay efficient, you need a plan and a schedule for your
workweek. A "hit or miss" philosophy or "when I feel like it"
attitude will not serve you.

For more efficiency, get involved with social networking. Create
a profile on LinkedIn, Jobster, Facebook. Get curious about
Twitter. Start a blog. There are many options to explore. Google
yourself. Did you show up? Today's job search requires positive
visibility.

Keeping your career path green means you are aware, enlightened
and alive. Spring is a season of renewal. The workplace is
dynamic and your career path and credentials need to be dynamic
too.

You have an interview scheduled. Great! Now it's show time. You
looked good on paper and now the employer wants to meet you
in-person or perhaps with a phone interview.

Interviewing will determine if you are the right person for the
job. Like trying on a new pair of shoes at the store, the word
FIT comes to mind. Are you the right fit for the position? The
interviewer will be listening to your communication style and
reviewing your experience and skills to see if you are a fit. If
you are lacking experience, skills or seeking an entry-level
position, they will be assessing your potential to learn or be
trained for the job. They will also get a sense of your
personality, attitude and enthusiasm.

Here are some tips for a successful interview:

Appearance Matters - Do you know what to wear? Knowing the
position along with the company culture and work environment is
important. You can inquire when you are called for the interview.
You might ask if the environment is formal or more business
casual. Stay conservative and check your wardrobe for darker or
neutral colors like navy, gray, brown or tan. Get a haircut and
look well groomed. Don't forget to polish your shoes. For women,
avoid perfume, bold nail color, too much makeup and heavy
jewelry. Dressing for success can and does make a difference.

Know the Location - Ask about the location. You can google the
location, set your GPS, or drive by, if it is convenient. Make
sure you know which door to use and ask about visitor parking.
Check your gas tank the day before.

Promptness - Plan to be 10 to 15 minutes early. Allow for weather
or traffic conditions. Meet the receptionist and observe the
office activity. This will also give you time to unwind and use a
bathroom.

Portfolio - Take a few extra resumes along. Bring a pen and
paper. Bring your business card.

Type of Interview - You can inquire to learn more about the
interview format. There are various formats including one-on-one,
round robin, panel, telephone and more.

Interview Length - 30 minutes, 60 minutes, how long? Make sure
you have breakfast if you have a morning interview.

Interview Questions - Behavioral questions are often standard.
There are hundreds, but preparing for and polishing off the top
25 would be a reasonable start. Be sure your answers are concise.
Practice makes perfect. Think of a few appropriate questions you
could ask them.

Research - Why do you want to work at the company? What is the
product or service? Learn all you can. Google the company name.
Talk to someone who works there. Know what you can offer the
employer. Additional knowledge and preparation adds to your
self-confidence.

Tell me about yourself - A 30-Second Commercial or Elevator
Speech can be modified to serve as a springboard. Know yourself.
In a minute or two, tell them about your work
experience/education, highlight your skills and strengths and why
you want to work there. Your response should be brief and
conversational.

Body Language - A smile and firm handshake can go along way. Make
sure you greet the interviewer with both. It is a good way to
make an introduction and will help put you at ease. Maintain eye
contact with the interviewer throughout the interview. When you
are finished, thank the interviewer and offer your hand. These
gestures will help you look professional, sincere and confident.
Follow up with a short thank you note or email.

After the interview, document the date of the interview, company
name and position along with the name of the interviewer and
contact information. Organize your thoughts and reactions to the
interview. What did you learn? Which of your responses to the
questions went well? Which questions were challenging? What is
the next step?

The interviewing process is about finding the best candidate who
will be a good fit. Likewise, ask yourself, is the employer a fit
for you.
