John, if it works the same as my Vista HCx, when you turn it on,
each successive press of the power switch will increment the backlight
brighter.

... Hi John, I bet that if you look in the Setup/Display screen that the brightness setting defaulted back to the zero level when you turned the unit off....

I have the Venture HC and it defaults the lighting on turn-off as well. Really annoying because without the lighting I can't read the screen, even in daylight....

... It does turn off every time you turn the unit off. I suspect that they decided to not turn it on automaticaly because of the battery drain. It will be on...
