My Vista CX does that as well. It seems like a reasonable behavior for
daylight hours (to save battery), but not so good for after dark.
I've developed the habit of powering on, waiting about 30 seconds, then
hitting the power button twice more to get to medium-bright.

Subject: [etrex] Etrex Summit HC backlight query
Hi. I got one of the above GPS for Christmas (to replace my old Magellan
Map 330). I find I need to adjust the backlight brightness every time I
turn the Summit on even though I have maximum brightness selected in the
menu system. Is this the way it is or what else should I do? The screen is
so dark when I turn the gps on that I cannot read the splash screen
messages.
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year to all.
John
