Hello Bill,
Thanks for the advice. The track log is much bigger than I had
hoped. I have made up a serial lead and installed MyGPS which works well . By
downloading the track memory and saving the track log as a .txt file and then
opening with notepad I can get an idea of the sampling frequency. I will carry
out a few evening walks after work this week and investigate the settings.
Maybe a good start would be to use the "Distance" rather than "Auto mode" and
set to record at 10m intervals, that should cope with 100 km which is enough
range for the Sottish winter walk. I can understand the "Distance" and "Time "
modes but am unclear about the "Auto" so will avoid it.
The EasyGPS looks excellent for managing waypoints and storing tracks.
Thanks for your help
Dennis

The track log is 10 thousand points.
You can also copy track logs to the "saved" logs but it drasticaly strips
down the data points and removes the time information when you do that. I
don't do that, so I can't tell you how many points it holds in each.
My suggestion is to try a couple hour hike with your test settings and see
how big of a log it creates.
Take a look at how it handles turns and altitude changes (if that is
important to you).
If you will have a computer (even a hotel computer) available, check out
easy GPS at www.easygps.com/ .
You can install it once on a USB memory device and use it on any computer
that has a serial port for your gps.
Unfortunately, I think that all of the USB to serial devices need a driver
that cannot be installed on a locked computer like at a hotel of library.
