if it disables the unit it sounds like a hardware or firmware issue
what firmware are you running and have you ever updated the firmware from

I can't find a reference here or in my user manual for a problem I'm having.
I use a Legend C for geocaching. Very often, when I go to Find>>Waypoint (or
Geocache), it will start popping up a "Calculating" message that is very
annoying and essentially disables the unit. Is there a fix for this?

I can't find a reference here or in my user manual for a problem I'm having.
I use a Legend C for geocaching. Very often, when I go to Find>>Waypoint (or
Geocache), it will start popping up a "Calculating" message that is very
annoying and essentially disables the unit. Is there a fix for this?

It really is a grip that also protects the sealing material underneath it.
Is it really a gasket or a rubber armour boot. Can it not be repaired where it
split via some sort of rubber repair kit?
Just a thought

Thanks Doc, I'll probably give that a try further down the road. I currently use
an etrex Legend and I have a need for something a little more accurate so I'll
probably just buy an etrex Legend H. I've been meaning to buy a new GPS for a
while now (my Legend has had the crap beat out of it!) and this just gives me a
reason to do it.

i have had good luck using a good grade of clear silicone adhesive for such
things as this. you may want to try that but be very carfull not to get any in
the buttons. after you put it on wrap it with electrical tape, the kind that
stretches. wrap it with the sticky side out so the tape sticks to itself and not
what your gluing, let it sit for 24 hours and then remove tape and you should be
ready to go.

I'd like to hold onto my GPS if possible since this is such a minor thing.

one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm enclosing a thread from an exchange I had with Garmin regarding the same
issue.
I have a Venture CX and after a few years the double sided tape degraded.
The sent me, for free, a repair kit that consisted of a double sided tape in the
shape of the contour and a new rubber gasket. I would have been just as happy
with the double sided tape alone since my rubber gasket was still in good shape.
In fact, I kept it just in case.
Open a case in their website and ask for a repair kit.

Dear Ricardo,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I would be happy to assist. We will send you a new rubber gasket for your Etrex.
Your order number is 14729692 and the gasket should arrive in about one week at
your Cherokee path address.

Dear Ricardo,

Any product should work. I have heard of customers in the past using gorilla
glue or similar adhesives. Just make sure that whatever adhesive you use, won't
degrade plastic at all and either melt the gasket or harm the casing.

If you cannot find a Garmin customer service rep who feels like being
helpful, you might try cleaning any remaining adhesive off the existing tape
and trying a thin adhesive to adhere the band back in place. I would
suggest avoiding any adhesive under the middles of buttons.

This is a known problem since the first etrex units were out.
Thumbs down for Garmin to disclaim it and not fixing it.
There is an inside layer of clear tape under it that seals the unit on the
several that I have seen. That tape has adhesive on both sides to hold the
rubber band to the unit.
I have not seen a black adhesive.
Regarding the outer rubber protection, does anybody suffer the detachment of it?
I've had my HCx for a little over a year and such band started to come off a few
months ago. It appears to be glued/sealed with a sticky black substance -
similar to something we call "butyl" where I live. The warmer the weather, the
softer it gets and the rubber band is now loose in several points, particularly
in the buttons area.
I don't feel like removing it completely until it does by itself, that's when
I'll do some butyl homework. I just guess that in such conditions the unit has
probably lost its waterproof capabilities and I better avoid exposing it to the
elements. Anyone?

I'd probably look for a second-hand unit on eBay (if you're really lucky
you might be able to get a broken one for not much money) and use the
gasket from that.

From other people's reports, it really depends on which person you get on
the phone and how helpful they are feeling that day (plus you winning a hand
of Fizbin - see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_in_Star_Trek#Fizzbin).
You might want to call the support desk a few times and see if you get a
support person that wants to provide support to you.

As others have said, the same satelites (United States GPS system, there are
some other systems out there) show up over the entire world and send the
same signals.
There is no "locking" of the unit to prevent it's use by location. The US
government can control the signal to enhance or reduce the coverage in
particular locations (and have done it during specific strategic times) and
they can shut down the (civilian) signal completely over areas if they
choose. The satelites send two signals: the civilian signal that all
non-military issued units receive and a military only signal.
Some maps will lock themselves to your unit when you install them. They
will only load maps to your unit, based on it's serial number. Other maps
are open to be loaded into any GPS.
Hi,
I used my etrex extensively when I was in Bangalore. I didn't have
maps, but
then again, I'm not sure how well India is mapped at the street
level ;-)
It worked just fine.
Cheers,
Bruce.

All gpsr will work in any part of the world. They are not like cell phone where
they ony work in the Cell providers domain.
The big questions is availability of map software from the vendor for your area.
So check out the Garmin web site and see what mapsource products fit your needs.
There may be 3rd party map offering but may sure they work the way you want them
too before comitting any money.

Yes, same satellites and signals all around the globe. I use a Garmin eTrex HCx
in Norway, for topo and road navigation, also on bicycle, it's the best for
multipurpose use, can also be used at sea, and in the air. GPSmap 60CSx has the
same functionality and is propably the king, but it's bigger and heavier than
the eTrex HCx.

I got a good deal from Amazon.com for Vista Hcx. It will be delivered to my
friend's home in USA and he will bring it for me in India.

I had that problem with my etrex vista. so, I bit the bullet and got the Hcx
model from Amazon for $209.00. There is a park in Phila where I always lose the
signal. I am planning to test it out this sunday provided the weather is nice.
When I compare the Vista HCx and the GPSMAP 60 CSx on the garmin website, I
can't see much of an advantage of the GPSMAP features over the Vista. Am I
missing something?

Koen,
I guess you mean replacing it by a Vista HCx? (and not a Legend HCx)
In that case you might want to compare the specs of the Legend HCx to
the GPSMAP 60CSx and eventually bite the bullet a little harder.
I have an eTrex Venture that I bought in 2002 or so and although I
never regretted buying it and really enjoyed using it, reception can
indeed be a problem.
I also bought a GPSMAP 60CSx this year, and that's a totally
different league than the eTrex-series. I'm not gonna go into details
here, but one thing I like is that the 60 is much more user-friendly
due to the way the buttons are placed on the unit. You can easily use
it with the hand of your choice or with both.
Mine still has a SirfStar chip, but newer ones seem to come with an
MTK chip. I'm not saying here that the MTK chip is not as good as the
SirfStar 'cause I simply don't know it. But in the open my unit gets
a 2 meter accury, which does nicely for me :-)
