Just back from a (very cold) Brussels evening peak.

IR3913: 2634(top) + 2626(tail)

2615 was also seen leaving Brussels Central for Midi on a rake of coaches later
- at around the time IR3937 runs. There was some problems on the
Namur/Luxembourg line in the afternoon, and this could have been linked to that.

P8312 - 2303
P8067 - 2365
P8307 - 2344
P8511? - 2371 seen although not confirmed it was this particular train
P8014 - 2326

Flew to Poznan Friday night, arriving to find thick snow everywhere. The whole
country seems to be covered with the stuff as no green fields or bare streets
seen anywhere from Poznan through Wroclaw to Katowice in three days. Made time
after arrival for beers and found a Czech themed Cellar bar with even dark on
tap but no Polish beers! Two large darks were enough for the head to tell me the
next morning I had been drinking to go with the reminder what smoke filled small
bars are like.

So to Saturday and a stroll to Poznan station for the 07.40 to Zbaszynek to meet
the tour that had come from Wolsztyn, walking past the stack with 5 x 07's by
the road bridge furthest from the station and ET22's 670/803/094/689/563 and
1127 in the other fan nearer the station. An on time departure was shown when
buying our IC Bilet Podroznika plus PR add on at the first window we tried, but
by the time we headed for the platform it was five late and when we got there it
was not even mentioned. The Solaris remained blank for ages but eventually an
announcement came and worryingly locals shot off, but we managed to establish
from those staying [more anon] that it was now 30 late. Eventually it was
displayed and an EN57 appeared 40 down and counting, meaning we were already on
a minimal connection at Zbaszynek. Sitting at Poznan Gorczyn for 10 minutes for
no obvious reason plus a slower run down the main line than timetabled meant we
approached Zbaszynek over an hour down but we had guessed correctly that the
youngsters we had asked in Poznan were also heading for the special and they
advised they had made contact with other Polish Railfans on the train and it was
not being held for what was eight of us.

Fortunately they had come up with a Plan B which was to stay on this Zielona
Gora bound train to Sulechow and catch one of two PKS buses a day to the town
halfway up the Sieniawa Lubuska branch, [Lagow], and these resourceful enths had
even phoned PKS to get the bus held for us as we had just 5 minutes to find
Sulechov's bus station which was nowhere near the rail station. So after a brisk
walk we piled on [according to the ticket] for a 48km bus ride, to arrive at
Lagow at exactly the same time as the steam special did, it literally trundled
across the viaduct above the town when we were getting off the bus, so we were
very close to missing it again! Clambering up the snow encrusted steps built
into the viaduct side we just got to the old station before it left heading
towards Sieniawa Lubuska.

Ol49-7 [as the tours third nominated loco] plus four antique coaches was the
special and apparently just like the December tour it was tender first up the
branch, so after a lot of slipping and coal from the boiler to unfreeze the
points on running round at Sieniawa Lubuska it backed out to the north for a
false arrival. As it was a glorious sunny day with 6-8" of virginal snow in all
places on the branch, the photostops/set backs/runpasts may even have been
appreciated by non-kettle fans [discuss??], that is as long as they were wearing
boots and waterproof leggings!

This time the special got back to Toporow slightly early so making a connection
into the 15.15 local EN57 heading back east, much appreciated as we were heading
to Wroclaw that night!

Branch stats: 14km from Toporow to Sieniawa Lubuska, through to Miedzyrzecz
closed to passengers PKP 1989, freight ceased 1991, passenger service short
resumption with ex DSB Lyntogs 1993-94. Current freight traffic of Brown coal
from opencast working reopening date not stated, traffic is two pairs on two
days a week.

So to Sunday and it had snowed again overnight, and it then remained totally
overcast and cold for the next two days, -7º seen on digital gauges in Katowice.
As for our travels we split, I went to the newly reopened Trzebenica branch with
more fantastic phots of Railcar SA134 006 in a sea of snow, with my mate going
to knock off Brzeg – Nysa instead, meeting at Opole for the 15.36 daily train on
T215, and then on to Kluczbork for the night,

Kluczbork recommended Hotel Castello, about 10-15 minute walk away and situated
on the Town Square but quiet, 160PLN each for a single inc Breakfast.

An Sm03 was gronking the wagon works on Monday morning whilst we awaited our
track objective of today, one of the new IR's from Poznan to Krakow which are to
my knowledge the first daily passenger workings over part of the western
Katowice avoiding freight line [36 km of it] from Lubliniec to Paczyna to call
at Gliwice, [this line is even added onto the latest timetable map!] Looking
on-line before we went, our IR 73120 [and the pm IR 37120 return] have been
additionally diverted [not yet reflected in on-line PDF's] from Gliwice via T166
and Bytom. Not pleased when our train arrived at Kluczbork as an EN57, and the
northbound IR passed on the freight bit was also a box as well. This line is
double track, in good nick track wise but still has a 60kph limit with a number
of PW slacks and we were clearing that days snow off the tracks so does not
appear to get much use.

BTW Quail needs correcting on this line on two of the junctions, at Lubliniec
there is an inside curve heading north from the curve we took leading onto the
north/south freight line and it is a huge flying junction for the onwards
freight line section where these passenger trains turn off to head for Paczyna.

Thionville's 16762 has at last succumbed to the inevitability of her fate.

This leaves Lens as sole operating depot for 16500 with 22 still in service on
TER services in Nord-Pas-de Calais and Picardie.

Due to the untimely demise of many Class 648 units causing them to return to
Alstom for some mods and general battering, services between Kiel and Lubeck
were noted today with 3 x Dostos and there seem to be three separate circuits in
the hands of 218 407 / 218 451 / 218 457

Thanks

these may well be diagrammed trains for the class, I may be wrong but don't

It has just been announced that paperwork has been signed to replace wheelsets
on defective ICE units by the spring, however it may be 2011 before the fleet is
returned to normality.

From tomorrow (8/2) a number of class 648 karts will be out of service for up to
2 months. According to a driver I spoke to today this means 218 + 3x Dosto
mainly on Luebeck-Lueneburg.

However, the following link
http://www.bahn.de/blitz/view/schholst/uebersicht.shtml

says that Luebeck-Kiel and Luebeck-Travemuende will occasionally be loco +
Dostos, with some Luebeck-Hamburg trains going over to Silberlinge to release
the stock.

Formed up tonight ready to go at Luebeck were 218407 and another UID 218, both
on load 3 Dostos.

Also in the Hamburg area tonight (7/1):
1016-013: IC 2082
115346: IC 2175 (!)
ES64 U2-072: IC1808 to Itzehoe
ES64 U2-073: CNL479

More gen from the weekend to come...

There are only 3 places left on this tour which covers 21 depots,Lugansk Works
and 5 strategic reserves.Plus a few interesting runpasts.Dates are May 1st to
14th and is £1750 pp fully inclusive from Kiev back to Kiev using the Dzherelo
private train.£200 single supplement. This is a unique chance to visit depots and
reserves in Eastern Ukraine which for the most part would be impossible to get
into.
On the last trip in West Ukraine we did every depot on the itinerary and the
food on the train was excellent! Please contact me on eerailtours@... if
you would like to grab a place.-Jim Colley.
