I have an internship available for a student intern or recent graduate, with all
funds to be expended before September 1. The intern would prepare a content
inventory and analysis of the web materials controlled by the ALA offices, with
the final deliverable being an information architecture plan that integrates the
materials into the right place on the website by topic. The ideal candidate
would be able to think analytically about concepts and the relationships between
them, and would learn and use our CMS to make some of the most significant
changes with my assistance.
Â
During July 9-14, the selected intern would assist with a series of one on one
website usability tests with members, in conjunction with our 11 division
webmasters and me. There may also be some additional accessibility testing with
members who have various disabilities. The selected intern might be asked to
analyze and summarize the findings.
Â
The position would probably pay $15 an hour, and could be full time (35 hours a
week) from mid-May to late August. If you are interested, send a resume and a
cover letter to my work e-mail that speaks to your ability to do this type of
work, even if the skills are transferable ones from other experiences. There is
a chance that you could work remotely for most of the content analysis phase of
this if you are not in the Chicago area.

*** 11th International ISKO Conference ***
Rome (Italy), February 23rd-26th, 2010
http://www.iskoi.org/rome2010/
Second call for papers
-45 days to the deadline for submissions
--- Theme: Paradigms and conceptual systems in knowledge organization
The arrangement of any information content using tools like
bibliographic classification schemes, subject heading systems,
thesauri, taxonomies, and ontologies is collectively studied today
under the broader label of knowledge organization (KO). The
International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) organizes its
biennial international conference to gather scholars and
practitioners across the world who are interested in sharing their
perspectives and experience in this field.
The next international conference will be held in Rome on February
23rd to 26th, 2010, and will have as its theme "Paradigms and
conceptual systems in knowledge organization". Recent research
presented in KO journals and conferences has emphasized how knowledge
organization systems (KOSs) are affected by the social, cultural, and
philosophical contexts in which authors and communities produce and
use them. As a consequence, a critical way of looking at all forms of
KO has spread. Scholars have warned that paradigms hidden in KOSs --
meant as sets of basic assumptions on which knowledge fields are
grounded at a given time and place -- should be identified and
discussed more explicitly.
Systems have to be developed and described with an increased
awareness of their foundations, as well as their still unsolved
questions. Critical awareness does not, in fact, eliminate the
persisting need for KO. The time may be right to move forward from a
critical stage towards a more constructive one, aimed at finding out
which paradigms and conceptual systems can best suit the various
purposes of contemporary KO.
Although many systems have been designed for the purposes of
specific domains and communities, the new situation of interconnected
global knowledge means that often we cannot anticipate which users
will access our knowledge resources. This poses the question of how
to deal with both global and local surroundings and needs, ie with a
diversity of traditions and special viewpoints (eg cultural,
disciplinary or theoretical) within the framework of a global
platform.
Papers are welcome on KO topics including:
- ontological foundations of KO, eg ontological categories, levels
of reality, principles for analyzing classes into their kinds and
parts;
- epistemological foundations of KO, eg psychological, cognitive,
linguistic bases, normative or hermeneutical presuppositions
incorporated in KOSs on what is meant by knowledge;
- pragmatical foundations and requirements of KO, eg viewpoint
warrant, cultural warrant, domain analysis, interoperability between
different perspectives, both global and local;
- solutions for the management of the interdisciplinarity,
transdisciplinarity, and complexity of contemporary knowledge
(as remarked eg in the Leon Manifesto);
- description and analysis of specific KOSs and their conceptual
structures.
--- Instructions for authors
Please provide by May 4th, 2009, a condensed version of your paper,
consisting of 1000 to 1500 words in accurate English, saved as an RTF

"Author" and year in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of
authors' name, paper title, etc.
In order to submit it, go to the submission Web page:
http://www.iskoi.org/ocs/index.php/int/rome2010/about/submissions
and create an account, specifying that you are an Author.

entitled
"Sharing Vocabularies on the Web via Simple Knowledge Organization
System (SKOS)" in London
21 July 2008 from 14:00 - 19:00 (registration starts at 13:30)
Venue: University College London, Engineering Faculty, Roberts Building
G06, Sir Ambrose Fleming Lecture Theatre
Cost: 20 GBP (students and ISKO members free!)
Predictions for the Semantic Web are heavily dependent on the ability of
computers to reason and communicate using controlled vocabularies. SKOS
(Simple Knowledge Organization System) development aims to bring forward
these capabilities.
Aware of the growing importance of SKOS, ISKO UK in cooperation with
School of Library, Archives and Information Studies at UCL has invited a
group of experts to introduce this standard, explain its status,
potential and scope. Speakers on this event - Alistair Miles, Antoine
Isaac, Stella Dextre Clarke, Leonard Will, Nicolas Cochard, Ceri Binding
and Douglas Tudhope - are involved in the development and application of
SKOS and related standards and are hoping to provoke some interesting
discussion.
This event, the third in ISKO UK's KOnnecting KOmmunities series,
promises a fascinating glimpse of the future of controlled vocabularies.
No one involved or interested in the development, management or
implementation of controlled vocabularies can afford to miss it.
For full details on the venue, programme and to book your place at the
event visit http://www.iskouk.org/SKOS_July2008.htm.

Dear colleagues,
a special issue devoted to Facet analysis has just been published in
Axiomathes, an international journal in ontology and cognitive
systems, edited by Roberto Poli and published by Springer.
The issue is oriented towards the exploration of potential
connections between facet analysis, a methodology originally
developed in library science, and other disciplines, including
philosophy, linguistics, and computer science. This looks relevant
also in the light of the recent peak of interest in facets by
information architects and knowledge managers.
Contributors to the issue include world authorities on the subject,
as well as researchers involved in current projects on the
application of facet analysis: Clare Beghtol, Brian Vickery,
Ingetraut Dahlberg, Claudio Gnoli, Vanda Broughton, Douglas Tudhope &
Ceri Binding, Alberto Cheti & Federica Paradisi, Uta Priss, Aida Slavic.
The journal contents can be accessed at
http://www.springerlink.com/content/106590/ from any institution
subscribing to Springer journal collections (please follow the link
to Volume 8 Number 2). Table of contents, abstracts, and references
are freely available to anyone.
Dissemination of the present information among information
professionals is particularly welcome, as the journal is known mostly
among philosophy readers. We hope to contribute a better reciprocal
knowledge of the two communities, given the interdisciplinary
interest of the subject. People interested in writing a review are
welcome to contact me for more information.

W3C Semantic Web Deployment Working Group
We are pleased to announce the publication of the SKOS Reference as a
W3C First Public Working Draft:
http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/WD-skos-reference-20080125/
This is a substantial update to and replacement for the previous SKOS
Core Vocabulary Specification W3C Working Draft dated 2 November 2005
[1].
We ask at this stage feedback and reviews on this draft specification.
All comments are welcome and may be sent to public-swd-wg@...; please
include the text "SKOS comment" in the subject line. Note especially
that there are a number of open issues, which are indicated in the
document. Please forward this announcement to any other groups which may
be interested.
Abstract:
"""
This document defines the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS), a
common data model for sharing and linking knowledge organization systems
via the Semantic Web.
Many knowledge organization systems, such as thesauri, taxonomies,
classification schemes and subject heading systems, share a similar
structure, and are used in similar applications. SKOS captures much of
this similarity and makes it explicit, to enable data and technology
sharing across diverse applications.
The SKOS data model provides a standard, low-cost migration path for
porting existing knowledge organization systems to the Semantic Web.
SKOS also provides a light weight, intuitive language for developing and
sharing new knowledge organization systems. It may be used on its own,
or in combination with formal knowledge representation languages such as
the Web Ontology language (OWL).
This document is the normative specification of the Simple Knowledge
Organization System. It is intended for readers who are involved in the
design and implementation of information systems, and who already have a
good understanding of Semantic Web technology, especially RDF and OWL.
For an informative guide to using SKOS, see the upcoming SKOS Primer.

Dear Professional Colleagues,
I have put up another write-up
"WEB IS A FOREST ... SEMANTIC WEB A JAPANESE GARDEN ?

Ouch. I'm really sorry about that.
I got an invite from someone and then went through the registration
process which checks your contacts from GMail list as part of the
registration funnel and allows you to add users in your contacts.
Little did I know that below the fold, it included every email

How emabarassing for me. :( I should have read the copy on the page
