I don't think Booklocker has any connection to Amazon. Amazon has CreateSpace
for their print-on-demand books and, I believe there is another place to sign up
if you only want to do a Kindle book.

I've been studying publishing though Amazon and the cut they take is much
smaller than the cut taken by traditional publishers. In other words, you get a
much bigger royalty for each copy sold. I don't know how it compares to the
multitude of other online publishers available. But many of them (Booklocker
included) charge you upfront just to start with them so there is a certain sales
level needed just to break even. If I sell my Kindle book for $2.99, my royalty
will be 70% or a little over $2.00. If I price lower, the percent goes way down
to 35% but you choose the pricing so you can do whatever you want.

The royalty is a little more complicated on the POD books but it is all spelled
out on Amazon's website.

I almost sound like a shill for Amazon but I really have no connection with them
other than I own a Kindle so the idea of publishing through them stems from
that. When I started to look into it, I liked what I saw. I was already signed
up with iUniverse but I've pretty well dropped the idea of working with them so
I guess they get to keep the money I paid for which I will get no benefit --
maybe that's what those sorts of places count on.

With Amazon (and all the others as well, I believe) you do have to do your own
marketing and promotion. So, in additional to the quality of your writing, your
marketing and promotional skills/efforts play a big part in how many books you
sell. I have been reading that the same is true about marketing and promotion
even if you do manage to find a traditional publisher -- they don't do much
unless you start selling a lot of books. Then they decide to help out in that
department.

If you do the print-on-demand book through CreateSpace (part of Amazon), and if
you do the proper formatting for the POD book, then they will format your book
for the Kindle and they (sort of) guarantee the results for the Kindle. And you
can do the whole thing for free unless you choose to purchase some of their
services but they are all optional.

The formatting isn't that difficult -- I'm working on a book right now and it is
just a matter of grabbing one of their templates from CreateSpace and following
the example in it. You need to use MSWord, I think -- at least that's what the
templates I saw are set up in.

I am putting the book together in Word and then will move the text from there to
the template I downloaded. I've done a test run of that process and it worked
well and wasn't that difficult. It just takes a little time and you don't even
need to be too great with Word because the formatting is fairly simple.

I guess the important thing is to do your homework and pick the publishing model
that works best for you.

Gayle

Sharron asked: << How is it that some people can write books and get paid to
write their manuscript and others have to pay to have someone read their
manuscript? >>

Sharron, you got some excellent answers to your questions about publishing a
nonfiction book already. To expand on just this one point, if you want to land a
royalty publisher who will pay all the costs of having your book edited,
designed, printed, and distributed, they must first be convinced your book is
worth investing in. If you are already a well-known speaker, trainer, teacher,
consultant, executive, or celebrity with a pre-existing audience for your books,
they can see how their investment in you could pay off. If you don't already
have an audience, they can't take the risk.

Publishing houses do not spend their own money to market the work of their
authors, except for those in the very top tier. All they do is put your book in
their catalog and if you're lucky, send out a few release notices or review
copies. The only way your book gets noticed is if you as the author speak,
teach, write, promote your book online, or partner with institutions that will
sell your book to their audience or purchase many copies themselves.

What you have to ask yourself at the outset is why you are writing a book. If
it's to become better known as an expert or to get an important message out,
recognize that the book is just like a business card or brochure. You have to
get it into people's hands for it to do any good.

If you are writing a book to make money, recognize that you need a different
model. The typical nonfiction book by a royalty publisher sells less than 3,000
copies, and you're likely to earn no more than $1 per book sold. Nonfiction
authors who make a good living do do because they are also speakers, trainers,
teachers, consultants, or executives. Their position helps them sell books;
being an author helps them get better positions.

If you're not already in one of those positions or you don't really want to be,
your only other alternative for making money from a book is to become an online
entrepreneur. Self-publish and sell your book online. But know that the typical
self-published book sells less than 200 copies, because the author is unable to
market it successfully.

So one way or another, becoming a successful author depends on marketing. Either
you have to market yourself in your profession or market your book.

What a wealth of knowledge in this thread!

As a ghostwriter and publishing consultant, these are the kinds of questions I
help my clients with everyday. In fact, my next book "The Money Making Author,"
is focused solely around that age-old question: how DO authors make money from
their book?

I'm looking for experts (like C.J.!) who have successfully used their books to
build their businesses. My book deals exclusively with speakers, entrepreneurs
and consultants who wrote their book with the idea of adding to their bottom
line.

I'd love to hear from any of you who care to share your success stories!

P.S. I'm doing a free teleclass tonight which deals with self-publishing vs.
traditional publishing, how to write your book and beat writer's block, etc. You
can grab the details at bit.ly/newyearnewbook if you're interested!

As a sometime defense-contracting manufacturer, I would ask you to consider
this marketing model, for practical nonfiction:

A book sits on one end of a spectrum of useful reading materials. Some books
are more introductory or general in a topic, and over time books will appear
about particular subtopics.

In the middle of the spectrum sits articles about more specialized topics; the
quantum of articles about the topics is not enough to justify any author to
systematize their respective contents into a book. If there is enough
material, then it represents a book-writing opportunity. The materials of the
articles frequently are known to specialists and consultants, but can be
availed of by self-helping parties.

Here is a personal example: In the book Get Clients Now!, only three pages of
actual text are devoted to the problem of how to get speaking engagements, and
these are all based on professional/ business audiences, rather than audiences
of ordinary consumers. There are no books about such a specialized topic, but
I have found articles on the Internet about this topic. I will read and
'process the content' of these articles, before I meet again with someone whom
I might hire to find the speaking engagements.

Further to the other end of the spectrum are the "proprietary reports". These
are about usually about extremely useful topics, but the compensation to the
author from conventional article publishing is not sufficient to justify
anything other than "limited circulation." So the user pays a rather expensive
"access fee", which is analogous to a subscription to a very expensive journal,
but additionally there are covenants to not reproduce the material or to share
it with anyone else. Something analogous to going into a theater, and not
taping what is performed. Another comparison: a physician uses "MetPath",
because the mere bibliographic function is an expensive scholarly undertaking.
Another analogue: subscriptions by law service providers to Westlaw or
LexisNexis, which provide computer searchability of various legal databases.

Again, my personal example is illustrative: if one searches Amazon.com, one will
find that there are a series of small-circulation CDs available, on different
topics related to "How to Find Speaking Engagements"; each costs $250.

On the far other end is the customized consultancy report. The utility is
completely focused upon the needs of the one who commissions it. The price is
quite high. Consider these analogues: blueprints for construction work; a
formula for a rubber compound [rubber-molding was my industry]; papers drafted
by a lawyer for a lawsuit; a well-designed polling report about a narrow "wedge
issue" to be used by a campaign consultant; an OBD printout from your
auto-mechanic, or other diagnostic report by an auto mechanic.

This model only applies to publications of practical commercial application.
If the nonfiction is of an academic nature, or is journalistic in nature and
designed for a popular audience, then very different issues and principles
arise.

I offer the above model, because the threshold question which must be asked is:
how new or unique is the subject matter of the proposed publication? What does
the proposed work add to the field, in terms of subject matter that has not
previously been systematically treated? Does the proposed work have some new
approach which makes its subject matter more readily accessible by users, or
perhaps more readily applicable to neglected constituencies of consumers?

I would now gently suggest that some publishers will pay for nonfiction works
by lesser-known writers, IF those books cover topics for which there are
unsatisfied audiences. In fact, sometimes these publishers even commission such
works. The reason for whether or not the publisher will do this, correlates
closely with the criterion which I set forth in the preceding paragraph: "what
is the previously-unmet market which needs this book?"

Sincerely, William Snow Hume, CPA, JD

Today I finished the last of my 2 eight hour dementia training programs. Weeks
ago I was nervous. I didn't know how the audience would respond. Then last
Friday, after setting everything up, I was ready to go. Once I opened my mouth,
everything just flowed. Everyone in attendance enjoyed themselves.

Today, I did another session. everyone loved it. One Occupational therapist
commented," I really didn't want to spend all day in a boring training session.
I'm glad I came, it was fun, you made everyone relaxed! I learned alot."

Boy, was I surprised at the responses I received. As a Mild closed head injury
survivor, I know I still have some deficits (word finding, english-composition).
As I spoke on dementia care, everything just flowed. No problems.

Some people encouraged me to hurry and get my business of training, consulting,
and speaking on dementia care, autism, and mild brain injury, going. This week,
I plan on putting up our website, and a plan to allow me to leave my job and
speak, train, and consult on a full-time basis by March of 2012.

Dear Sharron,

SEO expert Bruce Clay recommends that any business plan not rely upon traffic
from a website for the first year, in order for the business plan to work.
Further, he and others state that websites only rarely pay for themselves in
less than 6 months.

Before you hire someone to build your website, I would recommend that you read
the first four chapters of any systematic introductory book on Search Engine
Optimization (SEO).  You will then be in a position to evaluate if your
site-programmer has the technical capability to put in the things which you will
need it to have, if you want your site to be "findable" on the Search Engines.

Best wishes, WSH

I would agree that you can't expect a website to be the end of all marketing,
especially if it's a static / brochure type of site that only speaks about you
and what you do.

However, there are lots of do it yourself template webhosts where it's possible
to put together a nice looking site with good functionality including basic SEO
in the range of $75-$300 a year. Paying a developer isn't always necessary
unless you need something really fancy and complicated.

By the way, a programmer is not the same as a developer, who is not the same as
a designer. These are different functions. If you do hire help, be sure to get
what you need. Most sites that are professionally built have a link to the
company responsible at the bottom of the page. That's the best way to find a
designer that will be good for your needs.

I've got a handout with a list of easy to learn and inexpensive do it yourself
web builders, along with professionals I recommend to my clients. I think that
handout also include the basic SEO tips that almost any do it yourselfer can
install for themselves. Just email me for the attachment at coach.deah@...

Tresaca,

Have you investigated Suite101.com or Examiner.com? They look for people to
provide content for their sites in exchange for exposure. Once a certain
threshold number of people read your acrticles they even pay you so many cents

These will give you some idea of the platforms. I write as often as I can but I

syndication of what you write.

Hope this helps.

In this month's Get Clients Now! E-Letter:

<< How Much Do You Love Your Prospects? by C.J. Hayden

Does it seem strange to use the word love when referring to a business
relationship? Substitute another word if you prefer -- "like," for example, or
"respect." However you want to express it, the point is to consider how much you
care about the people you sell to -- their needs, goals, desires, concerns --
all the elements of their lives that might be involved in their decision about
whether to buy from you. >>

<< Who Do You Think You Are? by C.J. Hayden

The fear of hearing those words when marketing your professional services can
stop you in your tracks. It's the response you may most dread hearing when you
make a sales pitch: "You? You think I should hire you? Well, who do you think
you are?"

In reality, potential clients rarely say anything quite so confronting. Most
people are polite and considerate when they decline to do business with you. But
the real replies you hear from prospects are often a lesser obstacle to your
success than the responses you imagine in advance. The negative reactions you
think you might get can prevent you from saying anything at all.

<< What Are You Choosing? by Grace Durfee

Is it human nature to keep making the same choices over and over again? Perhaps
with the wisdom collected over years of experience we weed out what doesn't
appeal to us and choose to stick to what we know works. There's comfort and
safety in routine and the familiar. But boxing ourselves into a limited
repertoire may begin to wear thin. If boredom and frustration set in because one
day looks exactly like the next, it could be time to broaden your horizons and
investigate new options.

Hi,

I'm just starting the GCN programme, and am based in Cambridge UK. I am a coach
and trainer looking to fill my pipeline.

I would love to hook up with a British buddy - or someone in a nearby timezone -
so that we can skype easily through the programme.

Any takers?

Cheers
James

Hi Everybody,

I hope everybody had an enjoyable holiday weekend.

The next few weeks seem to be slow for me so I'm spending the time positioning
my firm for success in 2012 by utilizing what I've learned in Get Clients Now.

A little about me...
Last year, I started my own marketing consulting firm that caters primarily to
architectural, engineering and construction firms. Prior to starting my
business, I spent 15 years as a marketer for various architectural, engineering
and construction firms.

All the best,
Liz

Readers, there's a new Q&A in the Get Clients Now! Answer Center:

<< Do I need a business plan or an action plan?

If you're starting a new business or expanding the one you have, a valuable
first step is developing a written plan. You've heard about business plans, but
did you know there is more than one type? Depending on your situation, you may
need a complete business plan, a simple business plan, and/or an action plan. >>

I stumbled across Yahoo Contributor Network today
(http://contributor.yahoo.com). You can publish your content or write articles
based on their assignments. And a few days ago, I learned that ehow.com hires
writers. http://www.demandmedia.com/studios/creative-professionals/

HTH. Good luck.

Sharmil:

Question: I clicked on Yahoo's assignments and it said I did not submit any
articles. Is there a way to see assignments before you post?

Thanks...

Nancy

Nancy asked:

<< Question: I clicked on Yahoo's assignments and it said I did not submit any

In order to see any assignments in the Yahoo Contributor Network, first you have
to register as a contributor. It sounds like you did that, Nancy, and still
didn't see any assignments available. The assignments are determined based on
what Yahoo knows about you, so the more information you provide in your
contributor profile, the more likely you are to see assignments.

Be aware, though, that most assignments are for promotional consideration only
and not for pay. So this is more likely to be an avenue for promoting yourself
than it is for earning directly.
