Alla (et al):

I was using snail mail successfully to businesses, but found it expensive, so
this is great news.

No, I haven't used it, but here's how I mailed effectively to businesses before
I built up a big list of emails addresses. I've taught it to many salespeople as
the "Markham Method" (me!)

1-First send a very simple post card that says only:
"Watch for the letter in the yellow envelope. It can save you up to $100 per
month, month-in and month-out."
NO RETURN ADDRESS!!!

I got my leads from infoUSA (which costs money), or from ReferenceUSA, which is
infoUSA's public branch, and can be accessed from any public library site for
free (if your library subscribes to it).

You need to know that the biggest challenge when using snail mail is
simply to get the recipient to open the darned envelope. Most businesses simply
throw away ANY mail that is not immediately recognizable. I know we do.

If you wish, and ideally have a paper cutter, you can pre-print these on the
four quarters of an 81/2 X 11" sheet of 24 or 28 pound paper. I used brightly
colored paper just to make sure that the card got noticed. When you cut the page
into 4 equal cards, they are exactly the correct acceptable size for post cards.

Step 2: two days later I sent a very brief letter in a yellow envelope.

The color is not important, but usually envelopes that are an odd color are on
sale at your local stationery store or, better, at a store that sells papergoods
wholesale. ANY odd color is fine.

A- AGAIN, NO RETURN ADDRESS, NO COMPANY NAME, NO LOGO
B- HAND-ADDRESS THE ENVELOPE, DO NOT PRE-PRINT LABELS
C- USE STAMPS, NOT A MAIL METER
D- Simply sign in colored ink, do not give out any way to contact you.

The recipient, who is already looking for "a letter in an yellow
envelope", and who sees this one without a formal appearance, assumes it might
be from someone who is not selling anything.

And, opens it!!

Be careful here NOT to attempt to sell any product or service, and be
sure to keep the content very short - no more than one paragraph of 2-3
sentences. Your "sale" is just a brief face-to-face interview - or at least a
phone call with a decision-maker.

Example:
"(Prospect name), your name came up recently as a business owner who
could benefit from an update on recent changes in receiving payment from your
customers (patients, clients).

I will call you tomorrow to arrange to get some information to you.

I charge nothing for this service. My goal is to get local businesses to network
more effectively".

This is 100% true. The name came up in a list I got from my library; I charge
nothing for an in-depth analysis of payment receipt
(credit-cards, bank-to-bank transfers, and/or remote check deposit
systems, or for payroll because all my vendors pay me from whatever
prices I negotiate. I always negotiate to save them money, and to leave a fair
commission in the deal for myself.

And I can ALWAYS save my prospects at least $50 (usually much more) per month in
costs without charging them anything.

And "networking locally" means I request referrals to other local
businesses after my prospect has become a client, then encourage them in monthly
newsletters to frequent each-others' businesses.

I eventually became my own Chamber of Commerce.

Step 3- I call to introduce myself, and to set a brief appointment.

Over time I found that I got 2.4 appointments from every 20 letters I
sent. I have no idea what the statistics are for others.

If you adopt this, please get back to me with the results you're having.

That's my story.

Shulamit asked:
<< I offer psycho-spiritual workshops called soul strength seminars... How do I
reach people who are looking for more out of life and don't know I can help them
find a way to get what they want in a group setting or individual counseling. >>

The challenge with marketing unique, experiential work like this is that your
prospective clients aren't already seeking it. They are looking for ways to
improve their lives, yes, but they aren't typing "soul strength seminars" into a
search engine, nor are they asking friends, "Do you know anyone who offers soul
strength seminars?" It's very different from marketing a known quantity like tax
preparation, where people already know they want it and can ask for it by name.

In this situation, your most effective avenue to find new clients is to expose
people to the work, so that they can experience a small piece of it, and then
realize they want more. Take a few moments to read my article "How Can You Sell
It If They’ve Never Heard of It?" at
http://www.getclientsnow.net/2010/01/31/can-you-sell-it/

There are 6 different approaches described there for exposing people to your
work. Start by choosing just one of those approaches to be your focus and seek
out places where you can use that approach with people who are pre-disposed to
be attracted to what you do. For example, if you chose classes and workshops as
being your approach, seek out places where those who might want to develop
better coping skills (you named this as a key benefit of your work) are already
gathering.

Let's say you thought one group of people like that would be caregivers -- those
who are caring for others who are ill, disabled, infants, or elders. You could
approach support groups for illnesses and disabilities, networks of single
parents, nurses associations, etc. and offer to present a brief workshop to
their group.

Remember that in this case, you are using workshops as a marketing strategy, not
as a line of business. So you would offer a sample of your work to the
organization at no charge, and invite those who attend to experience the work in
more depth by participating in a paid seminar or private session.

By making use of already-existing groups to engage people in your work, you are
short-cutting the effort it takes to gather those groups together on your own,
which is a huge savings of time and money. You just need to be sure that you
pick groups where there would be a clear connection between the group's purpose
and the solution you are offering.

Best wishes for your success,
C.J.

Steps" by C.J. Hayden

<< Our lives as professionals marketing our own services would be much easier if
clients would simply read our sales copy and decide to hire us. But in the real

These selling conversations can seem difficult or intimidating, but they don't

This week in the GCN Answer Center:

<< The Real 5 P’s of Marketing

In 1960, E. Jerome McCarthy introduced the 4 P’s of Marketing as a way to
describe the mix of factors required to successfully market a product. McCarthy
labeled the 4 P’s as Product, Price, Place (distribution), and Promotion. The
idea was that if you could identify the right combination of these elements,
your marketing would succeed. Since then, many have proposed that there are
really 5 P’s, suggesting Positioning, Packaging, or People as additions to the
mix.

For professionals, consultants, coaches, and freelancers marketing their own
services, I don’t find that the classic 4 P’s provide much guidance in making
the right choices about marketing. Here is a different sort of 5 P’s for the
typical independent professional, who is both the product and the one marketing
it at the same time. >>

Hi Cathleen,
Would you be looking for a group that meets locally? Or would an online group,
with connection via bridge line, skype, etc., work for you?

Readers, if you missed it last week, here's this month's Get Clients Now!
E-Letter article:

<< Don't Give Up Before the Miracle

"It's just not working," my client said dejectedly. "I've been doing exactly
what the experts say -- networking, building referrals, following up, but I
still have only a handful of clients. I'm thinking about giving up and getting a
job."

"How long have you been doing this?" I asked her. "How long have you been
following this approach in the way you are now?"

She considered. "Two months, I think, since I really started marketing this way.
Before that, I was mostly running ads and trying to get website traffic."

"Do you think that's long enough?" >>

Marketing Lessons from the World of Politics

<< You can’t turn on the television or open your mail in the U.S. these days
without seeing a political ad. Between the
presidential election and local initiatives on the ballot in many cities and
states, it seems that everyone is campaigning to get your vote.

The voting process actually has quite a bit in common with how people go about
hiring an independent professional. When you vote for the candidate of your
choice, you are voting to hire that person to work as your representative. Many
of the factors on which you base your decision when you vote are similar to what
your clients consider before they decide to hire you. >>

Hello,

I recently had a job interview (I did not apply to this company as an
independent contractor under my own, but they know I my company exists). It
seemed to go well; I was not dismissed at anytime during the meeting and they
said they would get back to me after Labor Day. Is there a decent amount of
time to wait, then call and enquire about the position? Or would that not be
wise and negatively influence their decision?

Thank you

If you haven't already done so, I would write a thank you note (hand written
not email) to the person/s you interviewed with, thanking them for their
time and interest in you. I would also briefly summarize the 2 or 3 top ways
you can hit the ground running and help the organization if you were on
their team. Avoid any mention of why you want the job, make it all about
how you can help them.

If you do this, you will really stand out from other candidates for the
position. This will get their attention.

Since "after Labor Day" can mean later this week or next month, and since
many people are on vacation last week and this week, I would wait until
you're sure they've received your note, so the beginning of next week when
everyone should be back in town, and call the person who interviewed you.
I'd ask how the interview process is going, iterate the strengths you bring
to the role, and ask about the status of your application. If you're still
in the running, ask about next steps. If you're no longer being considered,
you'll be remembered if you know of a colleague who might be a better fit.

I've hired at least 50 people in my career so far and the few people who did
the above really stood out. Even if they weren't a good fit for the current
opening, they're remembered and at the top of my list for other positions
that open up in my organization or elsewhere.

Job searching has changed a lot in the past few years. Fit not competency is
90% these days. It's also really competitive, so you can't sit back and just
wait to be called. All of the above makes you competitive in today's market,
without in any way being pushy or inappropriate.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Susan Penny Brown

Hello,

I have my first book coming out in a couple of months. What do you guys suggest
for a specific marketing plan for a book promotion?

Also, if you are knowledgeable in that particular niche, or someone who is, I'm
looking for such a guest for my radio show at the end of September so please let
me know - that'd be great.

Thanks and enjoy the rest of the day,

Greetings all!  My name is Karen Boyd, I am a new business coach.  I hope it is
okay to post this question here as I am stuck on how to market the right pricing
for my programs.  I have placed some pricing on my programs based on research.
I am also in the process of sending/receiving survey input from small business
owners.  I have a rough draft of my services offered page published for your
input at
http://www.divineresultscoaching.com/services/ .

Is there anyone willing to share how they were able to price their programs?
Also, what are your thoughts about placing pricing on your website?

Any marketing tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
