Microsoft has recently released the next version of the client OS called Windows Vista and is about to release Windows Server 2008. With these new operating systems Microsoft is introducing powerful and revolutionary software technologies for developers called .NET Framework 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008. Sun/IBM/Oracle have released the industrial standard Java Enterprise Edition 5 (Java EE 5) which is interoperable with .NET 3.5.

The .NET 3.5 Framework contains libraries to develop highly interactive Windows Vista client applications and Silverlight 2.0 Rich Internet Web Applications. For servers we have an option to choose either .NET 3.5 or Java EE 5.  Windows Server 2008 provides the .NET 3.5 platform to host services for these client applications. The Java Platform Enterprise Edition 5 provides another option for hosting services for Windows Vista and Silverlight 2.0 clients. The interoperability between .NET 3.5 and Java EE 5 provides us an opportunity to develop composite applications that connect services developed on heterogeneous platforms.

This Sunday (Feb 3) at 3:00 pm we will discuss these topics in the auditorium of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology. For directions to the University please call 4800420-21.

We will also discuss how to pass the following .NET 3.5 and Java EE 5 certification examinations:

.NET 3.5 Certification Examinations:

1. Exam 70–536: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework – Application Development Foundation

2. Exam 70-502: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – Windows Presentation Foundation

3. Exam 70-503: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – Windows Communication Foundation

4. Exam 70-504: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – Windows Workflow Foundation

5. Exam 70-561: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – ADO.NET

Java SE 6 and EE 5 Certification Examinations:

1. Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP)

2. Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD)

3. Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD)

We will end the seminar by discussing the next IT revolution: Cloud Computing.

Islamic Banking - A need for Broader Understanding

By Adil Ahmed Shariff
adil.ahmed@...

Islamic Banking has been a very hot topic of discussion nowadays-some praising it, some criticizing it and some out-rightly rejecting it. But, what is the reality? The broad aspect of how Islamic Banking is judged and analyzed is in terms of its comparison with conventional banking. But, before making a meaningful comparison what one needs to understand primarily is that “it is the SUBSTANCE (Process) and NOT the FORM (Net Result) through which a transaction is undertaken is the key factor, which eventually would tune a particular transaction to be Shariah compliant or otherwise. In the following paragraphs accordingly, an attempt has been made to highlight some of the core issues (criticism points) that Islamic banks are currently faced with:

SUBSTANCE versus FORM:

Let us take a very simple example: A person being in financial difficulties, needs some urgent money (say PKR 1,000/-) to entertain some of his guests. He approaches one of his friends and tells him about his requirement and also intimates that he would be able to return the money in a week’s time. His friend says OK, I am ready to loan you this amount but I would take back PKR 1,100/- (rather the same amount) against this financing. In other words, he is charging PKR 100, 10% over and above the principal, in the context of getting his money back not on spot basis but rather after seven days. There is accordingly no Asset creation (core element of Islamic financing mode) in this transaction but rather money over money, therefore this over and above amount (PKR 100) is Interest (RIBA).

Simultaneously, suppose another friend of him also agrees to grant him financial assistance but instead of giving him straight the required amount enables him to purchase the required items to entertain his guests and then sells these items to him for PKR 1,100/- (sale price to be settled on deferred basis, say 1 week). Now, this PKR 100 (1,100 less 1,000/-) is against the items sold (Asset creation) which in essence makes this transaction Profit oriented (cost plus transaction), and not Interest (RIBA) based as explained above.

In both the above situations, the Form is the same – earning a certain amount above the principal. But, it is the SUBSTANCE which underlines the difference of PURITY– HALAL OR HARAM.

(I must emphasize here there are also other factors (existence, ownership, physical / constructive possession, identification of subject matter, certainty of price) which all stand equal to be satisfied, but the CRUX remains the same – SUBSTANCE over FORM.

The Performance Management System as Strategic Tool

A recent study by OnPoint Consulting reveals that managers and HR professionals alike are disenchanted with their performance management systems — and suggests some guidelines for changing this reality. When your managers understand how performance management is linked to your organization's larger goals — how it drives the business and adds value to the company — they'll quit seeing it as an administrative task. That buy-in is everything. Get it and you'll see a whole new attitude toward performance management... which can transform the entire culture of your organization.

More good news. Mr. Omair Zaman has also cleared his CFA Level 1 exam. He is a software developer in Bearingpoint with a background in computer science. He has a MCS and also has done two Java certifications in OB: SCJP and SCWCD. But he is very ambitious and just getting started, he has completed his studies for both CFA and CMA programs. I was just talking to him and he told me he will also attempt CPA in the future. Omair only a few more exams left in CFA, CMA, and CPA )

You can meet him and all the others who have passed the CFA exams this Sunday at 3:00 pm at Sir Syed University in the CFA seminar.

This means that 10 students cleared the CFA exam in 2007. Here is a updated list of students who have passed the CFA Level 1 Exam in 2007:

Dec 2007 CFA Level 1 Exams:

1. Mr. Irfan Khalq

Tel: 0333-318-5402

The incredible thing about Irfan is that he has done his graduation in engineering from Sir Syed University and without any background he has been able to pass one of the toughest financial/business exams in the world---sheer hard work and determination. Well done my friend.

2. Mr. Mohammed Ali

Tel: 0300-217-1437

He is one of the most hard working students I have had the privilege to teach. When he joined the program he was 'afraid of economics' and how he has scored a perfect score in Economics and six other subjects. I am so proud of you Mohammed Ali.

3. Mr. M. Hammad Ahmed

Tel: 0345-205-7798

He is one of the brightest students I have taught. He has previously passed CMA Part 1 and 2 with 560 and 540 scores. I love you Hammad.

4. Mr. Noman Inayat Ali

Tel: 0321-277-8475

He just told me that he is leaving for USA right away what more can I say.

5. Mr. Muhammad Usama Wakil

Tel: 0333-2367989

He is one of most consistent students I have seen. He has also competed his accounting/CMA classes. I have have seen him grow slowly, Insha Allah he has a bright future in front of him.

6. Mr. Omair Zaman

Tel: 0344-210-9201

June 2007 CFA Level 1 Exams:

1. Mr. Mansoor Sheikh
Tel: 0321-255-8492
He is currently a student without any background but is very hard working. The extraordinary thing is that he scored a perfect score in all subjects.

2. Mr. Azfar Hasan
Tel: 0321-210-1276
He has done his MBA from IBA and is currently working as an Investment Banker in Standard Chartered Bank.

3. Mr. Mohammed Taqee
Email: mdtaqee04@...
He is a Chartered Accountant who has recently started working for Dubai Investment PJSC.

4. Mr. Zeeshan Abdulrazzak
Tel: 0300-895-0395
He has done his B.Com. and has started working recently as a Research Analyst at the financial newspaper called Financial Daily.

From these results we can infer that it helps if you have a background, but with hard work you can still pass the exam even if you donot have this advantage. CFA is the world's most valuable qualification I suggest that you should attempt to pass this exam. The global pass rate for the June 2007 CFA Level 1 exam in 40%, if you work hard it is not impossible for you to be in this 40%.

You can get complete details on the CFA program from: http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/index.html

Assalam-o-Alaikum Dear friends,

As i mentioned in my previous post that my internship report (3rd
draft) sent on 13th Dec, 2007 to AIOU, Islamabad for evaluation and
approval. In this regard, i contact to the the conern person in
Islamabad to know the present status of my report, they informed me
that my report is 90% cleared and they cleared all the theoritical
and practical matter written in my report but there is still some
flaws in DATA FLOW DIAGRAM (DFD) and requirement analysis.

In this connection i would like to request to all members on this
group who can help me in modifying my DFD so that AIOU, Islamabad
cleared my report 100%. The students of AIOU already very well known
that the MBA degree can not be awarded to anyone without the
approval of Internship Report and qualifying the VIVA in AIOU,
Islamabad.

I hope from this group that any one will definately reply of my post
and refer me to any IT professionally expert person.

Thanks and regards,
