Description

Originally a forum for discussing the details of Railpower Technologies Inc's hybrid switching locomotives, dubbed Green Goats, and the RP20-series diesel "genset" switchers. This forum has expanded its discussion to the genset switchers built by NRE, MPI and other builders, and other environmentally friendly locomotives.

Railpower has produced two Green Goat models - the 2,000hp GG20B and the 1,000hp GG10B. They also produce the smaller 1,000hp GK10B, dubbed the Green Kid, and diesel and hybrid road switcher models RP20BD and RP20BH, both dubbed "Road Goats". Railpower's line recently expanded to include the twin engine RP14BD, and the six axle RP20CD and RP27CD models.

NRE produces the three motor 3GS21B and twin engine 2GS14B genset locomotives. They also are building their first six axle, 3 engine 3GS21C.

Railroads using Railpower locomotives include Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, Kansas City Southern, US Army, and a number of industrial users. NRE's customers include BNSF, UP, NS, CSX, US Army, and shortlines Fort Worth & Western and Dallas, Garland & Northeastern.

Railpower is doing all of its conversions using retired locomotive frames. For those of us keeping track of these things, that presents a bit of a challenge. One of the goals of this forum is to create a general discussion regarding locomotives used in the conversion process, and provide a vehicle to keep the rosters that I have compiled complete and up to date.

This forum was formed as a meeting place for information exchange between operators and fans of these unique railroad locomotives, and is a companion group to the Green Rail News website, http://www.greenrailnews.com
