As far as display ads go, these larger sites might want to take the NYT approach and start making some unique ad units that will attract bigger brands. Only AHH and SOHH and maybe HHDX will be able to to do something like this.

You could probably squeeze around $1000 out of them per site and maybe $500/month for maintenance. That might not sound like much if you only do one site but if you can get 10 sites a year, you're looking at $70,000 dollars. Good luck with that though.
