Pawan,

Going through Coimbatore is definitely longer. The shortest route is
to turn off NH47 at Perundurai (23 kms from Bhavani) and take the
Chennimalai 12 kms-Gangayam 21 kms-Dharapuram 32-Udumalaipet 42 kms
route, a saving of approximately 40 kms if you avoid Coimbatore.

Another alternative route is to continue on NH47 till Avinashi (as
you suggest) and go via Tiruppur direct to Dharapuram (without
touching Palladam) - this will mean a distance of 90 kms, slightly
less than the earlier route. One of our members who has travelled
this route recently was happy with road conditions on this route.

Both routes are good roads and you can easily keep good speeds.

In case you go through Gangayam, please note that you have to turn
left at the town onto the Coimbatore-Trichy road (towards Trichy)
and turn right after half a kilometre or so - ask for the Dharapuram
road.

Udumalaipet-Munnar is just over 90 kms. At Udumalaipet, ask for the
Munnar road, it cuts the railway line and goes via Chinar and
Marayoor to Munnar. But for the first 15 kms, the rest is mountain
road (road condition is normally good), and you can encounter
elephants/ bison on this route, hence avoidable after 6 pm (altough
there is all-night traffic). Allow for approximately 2.5-3 hours for
the Udumalaipet-Munnar stretch.

Well, this route IS short but corssing Tiruppur (the
garment hub of south india) is a pain in itself. We
spent over an hour to cross the
narrow/dusty/crowded/mad-traffic-ed streets of the
town ! I would strongly recommend to take the
Perundurai - Dharapuram route... excellent roads and
minimal traffic, have to be slightly conscious of the
directions though... this route is a maze of
roads/lanes zig-zagging across TN.

Hi All,
I am planning for a Blr - Kundapur drive this saturday. Although I have done
NH48 till mangalore before but this time i want to bypass mangalore and have
lunch in Udupi. As per the road atlas, i find this route:
Bangalore - Sakleshpur - Upinagudi (right turn) - *Beltangadi - Karkal -
Manipal - Udupi*

Pls let me about this route (in bold). How much time it might take to reach
udupi from upinagudi through this route? or if u have any other suggession
then let me know...
Thanks

You have 2 options, the first is the Uppinangady to turn off NH48 or
further down at Guruvankere, both of them will take approximately 30
kms to reach Beltangady/Ujjire. These 2 roads are smallish roads,
will be bad now after the rains (not the best of roads even at best
of times). From Beltangady-Karkala-Udupi roads will be better, and
unless the roads are really bad, you should cover NH48-Udupi
comfortably in 3-4 hours, depending on your speed.

The approximate distance chart is as follows:

NH48-Beltangady 30 kms
Beltangady-Karkala 50 kms
Karkala-Udupi 45 kms,
totalling approximately 125 kms

Compared to the conventional Mangalore-Udupi route, the savings is
not much, since that route is also approximately 125 kms, but
definitely much more faster (except for high traffic). Hence, you
may evaluate your choices after ascertaining the road conditions in
the Karkala route.

Hi,

As pointed out by Kumar, the time savings will not be much.
Uppinangady-Ujire-Karkala-Udipi is around 3.5 to 4 hours. However, the rods have
been upgraded in this region and I dont know the latest position of these rods..
in fact Moodabidri-Karkala is now part of NH13.. Could anyone fromSouth
Kanara-Udipi dist please give latest updates?

If you DO decide to take the Karkala route, you can still by-pass Udipi town.
There are pretty decent restaurants in Manipal, so you can lunch there and
directly join NH17 between Udipi and Brahmavar. Depending on what time of the
day u reach there, the time savings COULD be significant.

The Road in the ghat section (after Sakaleshpur) is not in good shape. in some
places absolutely no road. So you need to be careful while driving.

Similarly, the road from Mangalore to Surathkal (KREC/NIT) is not in good
shape. But its better to go through Uppinangady (25Km)->BC Road (22Km)->
Managalore(60Km) -Udupi (32 Km)->Kundapur.

There are 2 resturants on Udupi By-pass ( intersection of NH17 and Malpe beach
road). So you should not have any issues in getting food in Udupi.

Yes, Option is available. The route is
BLR-Mysore-Madikeri-Mangalore-Udupi.

Distance is about 325 kms from BLR - Mangalore.

Road condition upto Mysore is cake walk. beyond that
point, may not be good, because of rain in coorg.

some one in this area could give proper info.

Hi Kiran & Rahul,

Thanks for sharing the info. I do remember seeing the mails about the route
via Londa being in pretty bad shape.
I plan to take my Wagon-R, and # of passengers (incl. driver actually) is 2
adults + 1 (2.5 yr old kid)!
I plan to spend about 2 full-days in Goa, and don't mind taking a slight
detour (hopefully not more than 80-100kms), if I can spend a day at
Maravanthe, Gokarna etc. In all I've got 4/5 days :(

Hi,

On these lines... what are the other cities where LPG as an automobile fuel
is available ?
I know that it's available in Bangalore, and last I know about Delhi (i.e.
about 3 yrs back), it was not available, as CNG was the alternative fuel.

Hi There,

I have a rough plan here for you.. My assumptions is that there's NOT going to
be any overnight travelling. If that assumption is notright, please let me know.
I'l try to accomodate more things. I'm giving Bangalor-Honnavar-Goa schedule.

DAY 1: Bangalore - Honnavar/Kumta (with Jog Falls sight seeing)

If you leave early in the morning, like 6:30, you can make it to Jog around 4
pm, with lunch break at Shimoga.
Depending on how much water is being released at the Linganmakki reservoir, your
interest in the falls will differ . So it'l be between 1 to 2 hours here.

If you leave Jog at say around 5, you might be able to make it to
Honnavar/Kumta by dinner time. Both have excellent Kamat Hotels along NH17. 4
kms beyond Kumta, u also have a Panduranga Inn. All these are on the left side
of NH17 when North-bound.

DAY 2: Kumta/Gokarna to Panaji with sight-seeing along the way

So, if you leave Honnavar by 7:30, you can easily reach Margao in Goa well
before lunch time. Best place for breakfast is Upachara Kamat, 4 kms after
Ankola (left side of NH17). But, I suggest you take a short detour and visit
Palolem beach. About 25 kms after entering Goa, you'l pass through a town named
Canacona. Ask here for directions to Palolem. Its my favourite beach among all
the beaches that I've visited during my 8 year stay in Goa.

Depending on how much time you spend there, you can either return to Canacona
for lunch (there's an Udipi Hotel there), or carry on to Margao.

After lunch, you could visit Colva beach (6 kms from Margao) or Bogmolo
beach(around 25 kms from Margao). I suggest Bogmolo since its the prettier of
the 2. Regardless of which beach you visit, make sure to reach Dona Paula (7 kms
before Panaji), for sunset. Its an amazing sunset point, best spot to watch the
sun disppear into the Arabian Sea and the amazing display of colours.

You can dine and stay at Panaji. There are hordes of options, fitting every
budget.

DAY 3: North Goa Sight Seeing

You can see Aguada Fort and a couple of other beaches. If you are bored with the
same crowded beaches, I suggest you do a bit of exploring. I mean like for
remote beaches or forts. Dont worry Goa is generally a safe place.

Do some shopping and roam around the streets of Panaji. In the evening, catch a
river cruise. Ask the people in the hotel where you stay, they'l direct you to
the boat jetty. A 1 hour river cruise costs around 150 per head.

DAY 4: Local Goa sight-seeing

The 2 churches at Old Goa are a must-see. These are the most famous tourist
spots in Goa (after the beaches, of course). They are just a 15 minute drive
from Panaji. It takes 1-1.5 hours to see them. I suggest you also see some of
the temples in and around Ponda. They are not special tourist places, but good
calm plaes nevertheless. And the architecture there is also quite different from
the temples here in South India.

You can lunch either at Ponda or Margao. Start your return journey and you can
reach Gokarna before sunset (Margao to Gokarna is like 3.5-4 hours drive).
Seeing the temple and maybe sunset at Om beach or Gokarna town beach. You can
stay at Gokarna or Kumta.

DAY 5: Drive back to Bangalore. NH17 to Honnavar, NH206 to Tumkur, NH4

Of course this is just a rough sketch. You can make lots of changes here and
there. Or maybe reverse the schedule. Like visit Gokarna on the onward journey
and Jog on the return. Or maybe one direction you go through Mangalore-Udipi and
see Marvanthe. Depends on your comfort.

Here are news reports on the floods scene in Ladakh - none of the news items are
clear about where exactly the roads are closed The Ladakh Hill Development
Council web-site showed 2 days ago that all roads were open!

     800 evacuated, 15 killed in flood-hit Ladakh
Jammu, Aug 7: More than 800 people were evacuated to safer places in Ladakh
where flash floods triggered by heavy rains have killed at 15 people including
three Army personnel, officials said today.

The frontier region remained cut off from the rest of the country for the
fifth day due to closure of both Leh-Srinager and Leh-Manali roads while the
Army had deployed about 300 jawans and officers and set up five "tented village
camps" for relief and rescue work, they said.

"We have rescued 800 people from submerged areas till now and provided food
over 2,000, most of whom have lost their houses to the flash floods. The Army is
trying to reach out to people in all affected places," Defence officials said.

A major rescue operation was on in Leh and Kargil where the flood situation
was " very grim" with some 20 villages hit by flash floods and 22 bridges
damaged, they said.

It was likely to become worse if the rains continued and all Army
cantonments in Ladakh had been put on high alert and Several formations were
providing food, medicines and shelter to the affected, they said The Crisis
Management Squad constituted for food control said floods had affected the
entire arid mountainous region of Ladakh.

They said 15 people have either been swept away in flash floods or died in
incidents of house collapse since torrential rains lashed the region.

Phayang, some 20 km from Leh, was the worst affected with almost all
families of the village rendered homeless, they said adding two Nepali labourers
working near the village stream were reported missing.

Giving details, they said two persons were swept away in flash floods in Leh
district last evening while three Army jawans and two Nepali labourers died in a
cloudburst in Batalik sector of Kargil on Saturday. Two children were buried
alive when their house collapsed due to heavy rains and rising waters in Zanskar
area on Friday.

Torrestial rains had also hit nearby Jammu region where one person was swept
away in flash floods in the Chenab river in Doda district while two others died
due to house collapse and landslides in Dalan and Mandi areas of Poonch district
last evening.

Three persons were washed away in flash floods in Basholi area of Kathua
district on Friday.

Army evacuates 500 from flood-hit Ladakh

   Leh, August 6
With flood situation in Ladakh turning grim, the army has stepped up rescue
efforts evacuating over 500 people from several submerged areas of Leh and
Kargil district.

The Army has been put on a red alert in the region where incessant rains and
flash floods have left seven persons dead and hit 20 villages.

"We have launched a major relief and rescue operation in Leh and Kargil
district of frontier Ladakh region as the flood situation has become very grim.
We have rescued 500 people from submerged area till now," top Army officials
said.

Rain since the past one week has triggered flash floods in the Ladakh region
with Diskit located at the base of Siachen glacier in Kargil sector the most
affected, they said.

Five hundred people have been taken to safer areas and food and other
essential items provided to them since last evening.

Army is trying to reach out to people in all effected places and for this
operation, Army has deployed 300 jawans and officers and set-up five tented
village camps, they said.

Army has also pressed in four columns of engineers for setting up temporary
briges and communication facilites to help people caught in submeregd areas,
they said.

Nearly 20 villagers have been hit due to flash floods and 22 bridges have
broken. Seven persons, including three army jawans, two army porters in Batalik
area of Kargil and two children in Leh have been killed due to the floods.

Several areas have been cut off and flash floods in water channels have washed
away roads too, they said adding almost the entire Ladakh is affected.

"Things are very grim in Ladakh and it is likely to become worse if rain fails
to stop," they said adding Army's men and machines are trying to save several
villagers.

Entrie Army in Ladakh has been put on high alert and all the Army contonments,
and formation have been asked to help people, they said.

Several Army formations have also provided food, medicines and shelter to the
affected people, they said

They said choppers would also be pressed into service. - PTI

Heaviest rains in fifteen years cause landslides and flooding in Leh in Ladakh
Submitted by itinerant on Sun, 08/06/2006 - 3:13am.
I am having a unique experience in Ladakh; the place is getting rains every
day and some of them have been very heavy. Ladakh is a high desert and usually
it only gets a few inches of rain a year. It has gotten much more than that in
the past week. The last time the place got a lot of rain was fifteen years ago.
Landslides, mudslides, and flooding are occurring everywhere.

As a result the roads are closed to most places out of town. The place is full
of Western tourists who have paid a lot of money to come straight here and go on
a trek. They are unable to go because of the roads. There is flooding and
landslides. Others wish to leave Leh but cannot for the same reasons. It is like
the movie Casablanca: a lot of people hanging around the guesthouses and the
town center, trying to figure a way out.

From the map i can see one more route, dont know how feasible it will be
time wise...

Blr - Hassan - Belur - Mudigere - Charmadi - Beltangadi - Bantwal -
Mangalore (may be a few kms more in distance though)

Also I have no idea about the quality of roads.
But satya, can u tell me how much is bad? In Jan2006, when i went, about 5
km ghat section was bad but it was well motorable. Can we now do the 5-10km
section in say 30min or that is also not possible...
Other than that I think the entire NH48 is a extremely well laid road.

Return is on 15th. Can you please chalkout a plan suitable for us ? We know,
during that time it might rain heavily over there. Inspite we want to see Goa
during mansoon only, as we have heard so many things about Goa on monsoon.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Atri,

I have posted a schedule for Banirbrata .. just ceck out 4-5 messsagees before
this one. As i'm assuming there will be night travel, this cane be done in 4
days.
However, i'm not clear.. whether you are arranging your own bus, or raking the
Bangalore-Goa bus service...

If its the latter, upon reaching Goa, you can hire a taxi.. i mean car or
Sumo/Qualis/Scorpio depending on the number of people. You can hire them on
per-day basis. Also, you can chop off the Gokarna/Jog parts and enjoy fully in
Goa itself.

Remember that buses take 15-16 hours to reach Panaji from Bangalore.. So its
like by the time you check into your hotel, its already noon on Day 1.
Similarly, if you wanna report to office or college on 16th Aug morning, you'l
have to leave Panaji by the 3:30 pm bus or latest 5 pm on 15th Aug.. so thats
another "half-day".

Belur-Mudigere-Charmadi route is normally bad during the rains and
completely avoidable unless you want to practice cross-country
rallying. But it is a beautiful route through dense jungles and may
be worth the bad driving conditions.

Hi Bani, for a 5 day plan, I can suggest the following
itinerary:

Day 0 : Bangalore - Hassan (180 km/4 hrs) - leave as
early as possible (say by afternoon) and halt at
Hassan or Sakleshpura (220 km)

Day 1 : Hassan - Mangalore - Marvanthe (250 km/6 hrs)

Day 2 : Marvanthe - Goa (250 km/6 hrs)

Day 3 : Stay in Goa

Day 4 : Goa - Gokarn (140 km)

Day 5 : Gokarna - Mirjan - Devimane - Sirsi - Haveri -
Bangalore (460 km)

Slightly hectic but for 5 days, this is the best you
can do :-)

Atri, if you plan to enjoy ONLY Goa and not driving
down, then I'd suggest you take a Air-Deccan flight to
Goa (below 2K). That way you'd be saving on precious
hours and get more time at hand for Goa itself.

Also, if you do not have families with you and you
plan to really enjoy the Goa monsoon, hire bikes once
you are there - BEST way to see goa :-)

Let me know if interested, I can give you some ph nos.

Thanks for your suggestions.

1. We have already reserved our bus for this, So Air deccan is out of scope..

2. None of us knows, driving bike. So this is also out of scope.

Anyway thanks for your suggestions.

Nebu,

The route is as follows:

Bangalore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Salem-Bhavani-Perundurai-
Avinashi-Coimbatore-Palakkad-Trissur-Kochi, till Salem on NH7 and
from Salem on NH47.

The distance from Bangalore-Coimbatore is 330 kms and from there to
Kochi is 180 kms, making it approximately 500 kms.

This distance can be done in a day, if you start by 5 am. Road
conditions are good and facilities excellent. Safety at nights is
not an issue. Traffic could be high in sections. Ideal midday break
is Coimbatore. From Coimbatore to Kochi should take you not more
than 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions in the Trissur-Kochi
section.

You can bypass all large towns, including Coimbatore.

The route is uncomplicated. In case you wish to reduce the distance
a bit (by 20 kms or so), you can take the road right from Toppur
(approximately 30 kms before Salem, after Dharmapuri and descending
teh ghats), and proceed via Mecheri, Mettur Dam to reach Bhavani,
where you join NH47, saving you distance and time (since Salem
neighbourhood could be congested).

You can keep good speeds on most stretches, particularly Hosur-
Krishnagiri and Avinashi-Coimbatore.

Kumar

Hi Kumar and other indiahighwayers,

I am planning to drive from B'lore to Hassan and visit the nearby tourist /
holy sites during this long weekend, probably leave on Sunday and return on
Monday.

Could you advise me on the best routes, good board/lodging and any relevant
info. on road conditions etc.

I heard of ITDC hotel near Hassan which is said to be good and also centrally
located. Has anyone stayed there? What are the sites apart from Lord Bahubali
(Shravanabelagola) statue. How far are Halebid, Belur from here? Can they be

   Thanks

Madhu,

The route to Hassan is good, along NH4 till Nelamangala (20 kms from
Yeswantpura) and then 180 kms from there on NH48. The road is good
even during the monsoons and I have not heard of any damage. You
should maintain good speeds and can cover the distance in 4 hours.
Route will take you via Nelamangala, Kunigal, Yeddur and
Channarayapatna.

You have to turn off NH48 at Chanarayapatna to reach
Shravanabelagola (20 kms).

At Hassan, you can stay at Hotel Southern Star (well-known, on the
road from Bangalore as you enter the town centre). The Hotel Ashok
(ex-ITDC), I am told is not good, although it is there in Hassan.
Southern Star also has good food.

Belur is 30 kms on the Chickmagalur road from Hassan, and Halebid is
also closeby (15 kms from Belur, on a side road).

Shravanabelagola involves a stiff climb, hence you should allow for
half-day. Belur-Halebid combined are half-day excursions. There are
also hotels at Belur to stay (including I think the KTDC one). But
maybe Hassan is a better place to stay at.

A fast-track holiday would be as follows:
Leave early in the morning, reach Shravanabelagola by 10, see the
shrine and reach Belur by 4pm.
Proceed to Chickmagalur for the night.
On Monday, visit Mulayangiri and Bababudhangiri which are around 30-
40 kms away from Chickmagalur. Allow for half-day for these visits.
If you leave by 2-3 pm from Chickmagalur, you can reach Halebidu in
an hour, after which you can proceed to Bangalore via Hassan, to
reach Bangalore by late night (after 10 pm).

The above schedule is quite hectic. In case you can take off Tuesday
also, you can have a more leisurely stay at Chickmagalur where you
could look at staying at coffee estate bungalows (should be a
splendid experience in this weather). But expect some bad roads in
and around Chickmagalur thanks to the monsoons.

In case you want to stick to the Hassan neighbourhood, take the
Bangalore-Hassan drive leisurely, seeing Shravanbelagola on the way
to Hassan, stay at Hassan on Sunday night, and see Belur and Halebid
on Monday, such that you can return to/ leave Hassan for the return
journey to Bangalore by 3 pm, so as to reach Bangalore by at least 8-
9 pm.

Between Hassan and Chanarayapatna (28 kms from Hassan, 12 before
Channarayapatna), there is a good Upachar Kamat (with a petrol pump)
for any refreshments/ refilling.

apart from Lord Bahubali (Shravanabelagola) statue. How far are
Halebid, Belur from here? Can they be done in this time frame?

Kumar
