I remember I showed ticket and was allowed to pass the a couple of booth (at
least once I remember) - If you don't get more inputs, just read the tickets all
the time there should be a couple exit booths where you just need to show the
entry ticket. It was 1.5 years back and I travelled Bangalore to Rajkot, so I
don't remember when and where exactly it was.
I know Ramky sir maintains a good log, we can find from his logs. I'm going to
attempt maintaining that format in my next trip :)

Just a quick question: Do I have to pay toll at all booths or some tickets
can be shown to pass thru the next booth. If yes, is there any marking on
the receipt indicating so. The last time around I blindly paid at all
booths.
Thanks.....Ritik

Mr Dwarak,
Living in Sakleshpur,I think I have the right to answer your question more than
anyone else !!!!
I drove down Shiradi in my jeep last week, upto Gundiya. The 20 odd km will take
you about 1hr plus in your UV-A.If you use your offroading skills, you will not
damage your car. So,try it.If you don't like it,you can always take the other
options while coming back.I saw cars like Civic doing this stretch. Also,if you
do take NH48,use the Hassan bypass,it has been patched up.
Bisle....don't even think of it !!

Agree, I have done this route couple of times usually around/after the rains,it
is a very scenic drive with the road bordering the mulshi lake and then onto
Tamhini ghat. All the time I drove on this, the stretch after Mulshi till the
end of Tamhini ghat has been bad.
If you are planning to do this couple of pointers.
The stretch after Mulshi is quite empty both traffic wise and facilities wise.
After Mulshi there is no decent restaurant to stop at.
There are no petrol pumps ( I think there is 1-2 odd but i was not sure what
kind of pump it was :) ).

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Dwarak sir,
AFAIK - you have he folowing options:
a. Bangalore - Hassan - Sakleshpura - Mangalore: Last I heard, Shiradi Ghat was
in shambles but if you can manage the 20 odd kms carefully, this would be the
best bet
b. Bangalore - Hassan - Sakleshpura - Hanbal - Mudigere - Charmadi - Belthangady
- Mangalore: This is known to be good throughout but for 10 odd kms b/w Mudigere
and Charmadi. It would, however, add 50 kms or so. Plus not sure how the
Charmadi Ghat is now.
c. Bangalore - Hassan - Sakleshpura - Bisle Ghat - Uppinangadi - Mangalore: As
Ritik mentioned, a NO-NO for any car
d. Bangalore - Mysore - Madikeri - Sulya - Mangalore: Good road condtions but
not worth the extra 75 odd kms
All in all, I would vote for 'a' unless the Shiradi Ghat is totally broken now.
Someone who has done this stretch recently (satya?) might comment.
Cheers
Rahul

I suppose there is a route via Hassan, Belur and Charmadi Ghat. Is that
bad as well?

Subject: [IndiaHighways] Pune - Murud Route Query
Â
Hello Again,
I will be doing a Pune to Murud (1 night stay) trip. Please let me know the
route options and approximate times. Is the coastal (?) stretch from Murud
to Alibaug worth driving on the way back?.
Thanks.....Ritik

depending on the time of the day Katraj to Swargate can be a royal mess. First
the road was narrowed down due to BRTS and then narrowed down further due to
cycling track.

Thanks Akshay !. The route you've mapped out is what we essentially were
taking except that we turn left at Katraj bus station and proceed upto
Swargate and take a right. Will try this one now.

quick update, u don't have to drive till Singhad road to make a U turn, you can
take a right turn at the middle of the flyover that is at the junction where the
new mumbai - pune bypass and the old mumbai - pune bypass meet.

Here is an option
Enter Pune via the new Katraj Tunnel and drive down on the Pune Bypass till you
reach a intersection where it meets the old mumbai -pune bypass, drive on this
road to Katraj, Kondhwa- NH9- Mundhwa.

In september one of my frnds did the Tamhini ghat and he reported it to be a bad
drive. The ghat section was full of potholes big time. I am not sure what is the
current condition now.
In Oct I had gone to Kashid, the route was Pune-Khopoli-Pen-Alibaug-Kashid.
Khopoli - Pen the road was in very good condition.

Hi folks,
I am planning to drive in my Chevy UV-A to Mangalore this 21st Nov. Request you
all for status of road from sakleshpur to mangalore. Also, condition of
alternative routes, viz., via mysore, madikeri, puttur and Bisle ghat from
Sakleshpur.
Thank you in advance
Dwarak
Best route into Pune city is on the bypass, which you enter via the Katraj
Tunnel (the new one, not the earlier one). As you approach Pune from Satara
side, you will see a signboard pointing right to Pune (via the old Katraj
Tunnel route) and the left to Mumbai (via the new Katraj Tnnel route). Take
the left and you will get onto Pune bypass, with entry points to Kothrud,
Wakad and so on.

Hello All,
I will be doing Bangalore - Pune this 15th. Please let me know:
1. Of any last minute road conditions on NH4.
2. Is the entry to Pune on NH4 open (after Shindevadi) or do I have to take
the Expressway byepass road? The ghat road was closed when we went in April.
Thanks......Ritik

The best route is to go via Mulshi and Tamhini Ghat to Nh17 and proceed via
Roha to Murud. From Roha, the last few kms to Murud is along some good
coastal scenery.
Alternative route is to go on Bombay expressway till Khopoli, go to Pali
where you join Nh17 and go via Roha to Murud.
If you still want more, go to Alibag (exit expressway at Panvel) and go to
Murud via Revdanda and Kashid.

Surat - Baroda even though is 6 lane at times can be frustating. When I was
driving down to Abu I had instances where all the three lanes were occupied by
trucks trying to overtake each other :).
