I will try it out for you. Do you use the Hebrew language Kit or just
the fonts. I haven't installed the Hebrew Language Kit on the computer
that has photoshop 5.5 so I was wondering what you are using for Hebrew
fonts. Then I will see what happens.
Susan Weiss
Previous versions of Photoshop have not required a Hebrew version on the
Mac in order to use Hebrew fonts. Has anyone tried this with version 5.5?
With the new text capabilities of Photoshop 5.5 must we now purchase the
Hebrew version of the software if we upgrade?
Thanks,

nothing... Apple was aware that the century would end when they first
designed the Macintosh... however Macs will have a Y-2K type problem in
around the year 32XX or something around there... Apple says they are
working on the problem.

You can walk into pretty much any hardware store in Israel and get a adaptor
that will enable your US flat plugs to go into the Israeli style socket. As
long as your PB is like most all Macs and has no problem dealing with 220
current this is all you'll need. Alternatively you could get the plug
adaptors in Radio Shack.

I will be bringing my Powerbook 150 to Israel with me. It has the standard
Apple Powerbook power adapter. What type of converter do I need to buy so that
I can plug in the power adapter in Israel? Where could I purchase it in the US
or through the internet? Thanks for any help you can give me!Doug

Shalom,
I have recently completed a new version of RosettaStone, available for
download at -
http://www.arch.apana.org.au/ben_s/HtmlSupport/WebPage/upgrade.html
and if you would like to see some screenshots as well -
http://www.arch.apana.org.au/ben_s/RosettaStone.html?ml
What is it?:
RosettaStone is a FREE application and support materials designed to allow
the most efficient learning of it's 4000 word Hebrew vocabulary.
The "Online Hebrew Tutorial" is available as part of the download - a
complete, condensed set of language lessons to learn Hebrew.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
What has changed since last time?:
* Application supports personal notes; and classification on gender and number.
* Russian language support.
* Better classifications in the wordlists.
* Graphs of your progress.
* A rework of the internals to produce a better quality application.
If anyone has their own wordlists they are working on let me know!
B'shalom,
Ben Stitz
ben_s@...
PS - if you are upgrading from a previous version, there is a "Transfer Old
Wordlist Statistics and Notes to New Wordlist" available under the utility menu,
that
moves your old work onto the new wordlist. Consult the included "Online Help"
for details.
Thank You -
To my friend Dr Michael Kramer, who provided the Russian translations.

Fine Print on What has Changed Since The Last Version:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Application -
Major work on the internal design. Added a left, right, up, down keyboard
shortcuts (ie the arrow keys) to the wrong, right, next and show
translation buttons respectively . Fixed bug where the
DEFAULTEASINESSWITHINDIFFICULTY was 3, instead of 4. Added the
"Psychological Aspects" page with some educational technology principles.
The enter button now acts to take the cancel/dismiss button on windows, so
you are not forced to use the mouse as often. Added windows that produce
graphs of your progress for the session, for the currently loaded wordlist
over all time, and comparisons of the number in the current and current
versus history sessions. Added extra choices of gender, and number of
words. Added a text area to allow personal notes for each word. Updated
Online Help for new functionality, highlighted important points more.
Russian language translations and support. Reduced the size taken up on
screen for the windows version, you can now run it on 640x480 screens.
Made the Windows\Unix versions ship with all java files inside
RosettaJavaSupport directory. Added a splashscreen. Made and
hourglass/spinning watch cursor display when the application is busy.
Added an word choice to allow all non Biblical words only for users wishing
to focus on Modern Hebrew. Improved support for font mappings - should now
support all non asian fonts in the translation, notes, and foreign word
sections.
Wordlists -
Updated wordlists to have further classifications of number and gender, and
fixed some typos. Master wordlist also had some better
classifications/translations put on it (eg Biblical words were
reclassified); and many duplicate words removed.
Online Hebrew Tutorial 1.0.6 -
Updated "Online Resources", added "The RosettaStone" commercial software
(nothing to do with this software). Added further downloads to make it
easy to print the tutorial on a postscript printer. Added an errata
section.
Font Converter 1.0.6a1 -
Tidied up its appearance. Handles new fields in the 1.0.6 version
wordlists. Added a "SHebrew" -> RosettaHebrew converter option.

Have look on my related links page under the mac section, and hebrew sections.

Ben S.
Susan,
To read hebrew, you just need to download the correct fonts from
<ftp://ftp.snunit.k12.il/pub/fonts/mac/>
Writing is more complicated...
Check Out http://www.hevanet.com/dshivers/mikhtav/ and
http://www.snunit.k12.il/heb_new.html
There is no good program that I know of to do this on the Mac. There is a
program called galshan which has been discontinued - it is a nightmare to
work with. Another option is to export Hebrew text from Word to HTML but
this does not always work well and is not readable on all platforms or on
all browsers. The best option we came up with is a series of complicated,
tedious and time-consumining maneuvers with Nisus. If you are interested in
more, contact me off-line.

Shalom,
I have three news items included in this mail out:
<1> Listening Skills audio files for learners of Hebrew are available for
download.
<2> Petition concerning the 13 Jews falsely arrested in Iran.
<3> The new version of RosettaStone (ie 1.0.6), is *not* available yet, but
will be "real soon now" (4 weeks?).
<1> Listening Skills audio files for learners of Hebrew are available for
download.
Finally I have the publisher's permission, and a server big enough
(hopefully) to serve these files.
From the web page -
These files have been broadcast by SBS Radio, Australia. They are Hebrew
spoken by native speakers. Thank you to Diane Willman and Nitza Lowenstein
of SBS for their generous permission to use the material.
I have performed a special pitch-time conversion on the audio. This means
the speakers talk at half their regular speed, yet retain their normal
voice. Hopefully this will be useful for those trying to improve their
Hebrew listening and comprehension skills.
It is assumed that you already know perhaps 300 or more Hebrew verbs, for
this material to be useful to you. If you don't you're wasting your time
somewhat downloading them. If you aren't there yet, you might like to use
RosettaStone, a free Hebrew tutoring application, to get up to speed.
This 'stuff is available from -
http://www.arch.apana.org.au/ben_s/ListeningSkills.html?ml
<2> Petition concerning the 13 Jews falsely arrested in Iran.
This is not related to learning Hebrew or my site, but is very important!
Two months ago, 13 Jews - including teachers, a rabbi, and a shochet - were
arrested in Iran on false charges and accused of "world arrogance" and
spying for the "Zionist regime." In 1997, Iran hanged two people who were
convicted of spying for Israel and the United States. Demand their
immediate release by adding your name to the petition which will be sent to
the Islamic Republic of Iran's permanent representative to the United
Nations.
Please take a moment to add your name to the petition available at -
http://www.vjnews.com/iranprotest.htm
You might say what will adding an email address to a web page do? However
it does appear that the publicity generated over the arrests and pressure
from world leaders has clearly embarrassed the Iranian government, and may
yet free these individuals.
<3> The new version of RosettaStone (ie 1.0.6), is *not* available yet, but
will be "real soon now" (4 weeks?).
I am doing some serious debugging/testing, and hope to produce a more
polished, quality application for 1.0.6. For this reason I don't want to
rush it out there.
I hope to have it done within 4 weeks, although moving house may impact on
this date.
This version will have a Russian translation, an improved wordlist, the
ability to add your own notes and other goodies.

We often get junk mail about such things, looking through my waste paper
basket I found a fax sent out on 10.6.99 by Apple Center Jm for G3/300 17"
screen and an internal modem or zip for $2249
Another sent out 20.6 for a G3/350 128sd/12gb/zip, 17" screen, internal
modem $3249
If interested, call Kobi at 1 800 22 77 44
I would also suggest calling mac/pc zone 1 800 220-440 -
Ask to speak with Aaron and tell him that Charlie from J-Town suggested
that you call him. You can see most of their products on-line at their
American site http://www.maczone.com/ and use the same cat no. to order
here in Israel.
Good Luck!
