Registrations for the 2006 Annual International Conference in Shanghai, China are now closed. The hotel, Portman Ritz Carlton, is sold out from Sunday, October 15th through Thursday night, October 19th. Almost 200 registrants are scheduled to participate in the largest international CASMA conferene to date. The optimism of recent changes in GDS pricing models has probably loosened the conference budget at the Airlines.

Grabbing opportunities in the wake of new carrier GDS contracts in North America.

Interview with Rajiv Aggarwal, director - business development, Farelogix.

Has 2006 emerged as a defining year for those associated with the airlines industry? Rajiv Aggarwal, director - business development, Farelogix certainly feels so. With the expiration of carrier GDS contracts, most North American carriers took the opportunity to introduce wholesale changes in the way they manage their distribution. And Farelogix has been at the forefront of this evolution, says Aggarwal.

No, you can't bring water on the plane but a grown man can successfully fly to Amsterdam with the passport of a 2-year old girl.  A British businessman mistakenly took his daughter's passport  with him on a recent trip to the Netherlands and managed to get through 2 passport checks at London's Luton airport and board the plane.  In fact, he brought up the error to passport control in Amsterdam.  The airline he flew, EasyJet, will likely face a fine.

This new venture with Airlogica follows the recent launch of the carrier's pioneering Etihad Guest programme, a loyalty scheme which challenges the traditional airline approach and instead responds to customer demand by offering its members flexibility of choice, transparency and convenience. "After an extensive review we have identified Airlogica's Zeus as the best available product to manage the challenging area of our distribution costs across the GDSs. Furthermore, Zeus will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of all travel agent bookings, which we are confident will lead to a decrease in GDS costs and, in turn, will enable us to continue offering our Guests a superior service."

Dennis Keith discovered the dark side of Southwest Airlines' "freedom" on a trip from Los Angeles to Baltimore two weeks ago. The Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) May 19, 2005 -- consultant had paid $306 for a two-stop flight that took him through Phoenix and Nashville. His itinerary started in the early afternoon and ended at about 10:30 p.m.-a long day on the road, but enough time to get to his meeting the next morning....

...You could blame the computers or the distribution, says Nick Bredimus, an airline consultant. But ultimately, Southwest is the way it is because of its business philosophy.

"Southwest is a unique airline," he says. It goes beyond the peanuts and soda served to passengers, the first-come, first-served boarding, or the crew's irreverent attitude, inspired by Southwest's legendary chief executive, Herb Kelleher....

Computer hacking is a serious crime. The fact that many young people think that its `way cool', doesn't make it any less criminal. Hacking is just a modern-day take on vandalism or shoplifting, that is taking or defacing something that doesn't belong to you. A recent posting of how to hack a Southwest Airlines Boarding pass is nothing more than advocating taking a seat that doesn't belong to you. Airline consultant Nick Bredimus also writes about how hackers have been arrested. Stealing an airline seat is not far removed from downloading hacked music files.

At first I that British Phenom, Harry Potter, had some tie to Sabre with the blog "A Former Sabre Geek". Sorry, that's Gary Potter. It is not clear from the blog title whether Potter used to be a geek or used to be with Sabre. In any case, he has some interesting links and some posts that are on the topics we all love best, Airlines and GDSs. It is also not clear yet from reading whether Potter holds any grudges against his former employer, but many of their alums do.

The aggressive plans of Malev Hungarian Airlines have been in the news lately. A report today says they have introduced electronic ticketing enhancements. Two weeks ago they were reporting on the selection of Airlogica as their partner in distribution cost control. And, for the big daddy of all partnerships, Malev has been invited to be a member of the oneworld global airline alliance. Budapest will certainly be a popular destination with all the Airline Consultants.

There is news report that Sabre is offering to pay travel agents for booking American Airlines. This is reminiscent of the days when CRS companies were lining up to write fat checks to travel agencies. It was not a very good way for the CRSs to compete, especially with airlines providing the checkbook. Wonder if the GDSs have fully thought this one through?

"Camel's nose under the tent" is how one civil rights activist described the government's desire for more reporting of airline passenger data. The plan is to use the full content of the PNR to thwart terrorists. Many are skeptical of whether the expanded disclosure will nab any terror suspects. They see it as a further erosion of privacy rights and our freedom to travel. See the full New York Times article for balanced reporting.

AFS incorporates the billing information data tapes (BIDT) from the GDSs and processes them in the Bredimus system to generate marketing and financial reports such as overall agent sales, passive bookings, duplicated reservations, and wait-listed bookings. Nicholas Bredimus, president of Bredimus Systems, says "These checks include the testing of various rule categories attached to the fares. The fares can then be compared between the individual GDSs". Quality assurance is implemented for important city pairs in the major reservation systems (Galileo, Amadeus, Sabre and Worldspan).

The always vigilant airlines have solution for a U.S. Homeland Security rule. How about a software robot that constantly scans flights and passenger data looking for critical or missing information? That is exactly what KLM has agreed to use: Airlogica's Flash software for this very important TSA mandate. Passport or passenger fields that are inaccurate or missing are quickly remedied with automatic messaging. Automated follow up action is also included i.e. cancelling a booking if the necessary data never arrives.
