I have just finished reading Deming's "New Economics". It is a pretty appalling
book but that aside, I am now convinced that control charts have little or no
relevance to software development. That said, I am happy be proven wrong.
Has anyone got any experience using control charts? How did you use them?
I am not interested in a discussion of control charts, just to hear from people
the experience ( positive or negative ) that they have had with them.
Depending on the stories, it may be time to drive a stake through the heart of
Control Charts and Common Versus Special Cause of Variance in software.
Dear All I have just finished reading Deming's "New Economics". It is a pretty appalling book but that aside, I am now convinced that control charts have...
Chris, I have used control charts - lots of them - more than a decade back. Those were the CMM days, and we were all experimenting with how the SPC principles ...
Tathaget Many thanks for responding. I find it interesting that you do not use them now. What value did you get from them? Why don't you use them now? You said...
Chris, Like I said, we were all experimenting with SPC concepts, and we found some value in some measures and less value in some other. That said, I am not ...
Is it just the common cause vs special cause idea that you don't like, for software, or do you not agree with collecting statistics at all? I mean, I kinda...

Hi Matt, This is not a new idea. Watts Humphrey tried to apply the ideas of statistical process control to software in the 1990's with his PSP and TSP...

Hi Chris, I personally find it interesting to map performance of the team against time to look at the variation. I'm testing the idea that demand and ...

Paul Do you still use control charts and spc? If not, why not? Which is the best watts humprey reference? Thanks Chris Sent from my iPhone On 23 Jun 2009, at...
Hi Matt, No I no longer use control charts or spc. DO I think their useful? Yes, in the right context. In my experience they work well for deterministic,...
Maybe going a bit far afield, but with regards to Watts, PSP/TSP, etc., the president and CEO (who are brothers) from Vicarious Visions, a video game company....
How can we answer this self-contradiction in the context of this discussion: if software is indeed a "creative" effort the way we think creating music or ...
I would think that it is because software development is sometimes creative, and sometimes not. Boring example: New reporting infrastructure -- creative...
... A great book on the subject is "Artful Making" by Rob Austin and Lee Devin. I recommend it. The analogy they choose to focus on is the Theatre. A Broadway...
... Not the fact that you can collect metrics. The discussion started with whether control charts could be applied to software. The issue of 'how' might be...
... To me the question "can you apply control charts" is less interesting then the question "to what ends?" Clearly you can put numbers to almost anything....

Hello, Tathagat. On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at 1:32:37 PM, you ... Let the people who take the task be responsible for making the deadline? They are anyway....
I didn't say anyone else was tracking it. All I am saying is how do you work to a deadline without tracking it ? Those responsible for a task still have to...
