After its debut and success at KM Australia, KM Asia 2007 is proud to bring you a unique networking opportunity called KM Arena.
Simple but effective!
Once at KM Asia, if there is someone at the conference you would like to meet, you can request that they meet you in the KM Arena.
How to arrange a meeting in KM Arena:
Look at the attendee list located at the Ark Group stand to see if there is anyone in particular you would like to meet
Head to the KM Arena and tell the Ark Group staff both your name and the name of the person/s you would like to meet
Watch the screen to see when the person you requested enters the Arena
Introduce yourself and begin networking!
Alternatively you can pre-arrange a meeting with someone by posting a message in this forum.
We encourage you to suggest topics online that you would be interested in discussing with other attendees. By posting in this group, you can generate some initial discussion, and then make plans to meet up in the KM Arena to explore the topic further.
We have positive expectations about this practical exercise and anticipate that this year's delegates will enjoy embracing the enhanced networking opportunities!
Michel Bauwens, one of the keynotes from KM Australia 2007, has kindly provided the following link to a video of a recent presentation given at Swinburne University.
The video was produced by Darren Sharp at Swinburne, and Michel has stated that it is by far the best presentation so far, clearly explaining the basics of the Peer to Peer Foundation's vision for peer to peer.
Michel made a great contribution to KM Australia this year and received great feedback, so if you are interested in find out more about Michel and his work, please visit http://p2pfoundation.net
I am a doctoral candidate at the Graduate College of Management of the Southern Cross University (SCU) in Australia . As part of the course, all candidates are required to undertake a research project that examines a significant issue relating to business.
The issue I am investigating is the relationship between a firm’s
knowledge management capability and competitive advantage particularly in respect of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia . In today’s dynamic turbulent market place, knowledge management has emerged as a powerful weapon for organisations to remain competitive. While SMEs critically contribute to the economic growth of a country, this study will attempt to provide business executives with useful insights on how the firms need to be effectively managed for their overall knowledge management capability to achieve, leverage, exploit, and sustain a competitive advantage.
The questionnaire of this online survey should be filled out by the senior executives of SMEs who are knowledgeable of their
organisation’s knowledge infrastructure and process capabilities as well as its competitive advantage. Completion of the survey is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time without consequence by closing the internet browser. Data collected is anonymous, strictly confidential and will be kept in a secure place.
If you are willing to participate, please click on the following web link to take you to the survey and complete the questionnaire before 27th August:
Please answer all questions. Your assistance in completing the survey is greatly appreciated. If you would like to receive a summary of the research results when it is available, please send me a requesting email to the address given below.
The ethical aspects of this study have been approved by the SCU Human Research Ethics Committee. The approval number is ECN-07-116. If you have any complaints or reservations about any ethical aspect of your participation in this research, you may contact the Committee through the Ethics Complaints Officer, Ms. Sue Kelly (phone: 02.6620.9139, fax: 02.6626.9145, email: skelly@...). Any complaint you make will be treated in confidence and you will be informed of the outcome.
Thank you very much for your time and I do look forward to your
participation.

KM Australia 2007, Knowledge, Discovery and Collaboration has come and gone and we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated and became involved with its success.
As you may know, this year we conducted a survey and talked with past attendees to find out what they would want out this year's KM event. We created more room within the exhibition area itself, we provided a table format to allow for more interaction, rather than the standard theatre style, plus we tried something new with the KM Arena (a networking forum) and this proved to be a great success.
As with everything, when we tried to provide for something, another concern came up.The sound at the event wasn't the best a certain times and we tried to mend that on Day Two, but the venue doesn't really allow for it.
There have been some good conversations taking place in the blogosphere and some are sharing some slides from KM Australia 2007:
Stay posted, as we will be publishing some interesting statistics on the event, plus we will be asking all of you where we can improve upon next year; change of venue / change of direction of event(more technology or less) / location(would Melbourne be a good change – but would it affect whether or not you attend)
Thank you again for all of your support and please visit www.arkgroupaustralia.com.au for all of our other upcoming events, plus go to www.kmasia.com which is being held in Singapore, 29 -31 October 2007.If you are an attendee to this KM Australia 2007 and want to attend KM Asia 2007 – please let us know, and we can work out a special price for you.
Ark Group Australia will be holding our first "Collaboration in the
World of Web 2.0" conference from September 12-14, 2007 at the
Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour, Sydney.
The conference will demystify the concept of Web 2.0 and explore how
these technologies are revolutionising the business world by
enabling enhanced means for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Attendees will have a chance to see the practical benefits that
these technologies can offer in terms of ROI, and how Web 2.0
contributes to improvements to overall business processes, presented
as case studies by leading organisations and practitioners from a
range of industries. Amongst those giving presentations are Network
Ten, Westfield, ABC, Australian Red Cross, and Bell Canada (Canada's
largest telecommunications company).

Ark Group has announced the keynote and practitioner speaker line-up for KM Asia 2007. The seventh annual pan-Asian event taking place 29-31 October in Singapore, will be headlined by Robert H. Buckman, Former CEO of Buckman Laboratories; Verna Allee, Managing Director of Verna Allee Associates; Dave Snowden, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Cognitive Edge; and Jeff Kelly, Director of Knowledge Strategy and Head Instructor of Web 2.0 University for US-based Web 2.0 consultancy, Hinchcliffe and Co.
Robert H. Buckman makes a return to KM Asia this year after previously presenting in 2002. The author of the first book that focused on the cultural aspects of knowledge management, "Building a Knowledge Driven Organization" will present his insights on establishing a culture of trust as the foundation of knowledge sharing across an organisation. He will also co-present an interactive workshop with the current Chairman of Buckman Laboratories, his daughter, Katherine Buckman Gibson.
Verna Allee, an internationally recognised leader in value network analysis and author of "The Knowledge Evolution" and "The Future of Knowledge", will present recent work on value network tools, strategies and practices, whilst the ever-increasing importance of the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on KM will be explored by Jeff Kelly in sessions that discuss Enterprise 2.0 and also Web 2.0 fundamentals, such as the specific design patterns and business models driving the next generation of the Web.
Dave Snowden, Emeritus Director and a regular keynote at KM Asia, will this year present on the strategic context of knowledge management, examining where social computing can play a role, enabling learning through failure, and discussing life after knowledge management. Commenting on this year's conference, Snowden states, "KM Asia remains the major event in the field in Asia Pacific, it's one event in the region that allows you to keep up to date on the theory, practice and tools."
The keynotes will be joined by a number of local and international KM practitioners from a range of backgrounds, including organisations such as Singapore Police Force, Medco E&P Indonesia, Straits Knowledge, Singapore Sports Council, the Western Australian Office of e-Government, The Change Studio, Gurteen Knowledge Community, iKMS, Hong Kong Knowledge Management society, Republic of Singapore Navy, and Buckman Laboratories and Tata and Sons, both winners of 2006 Global MAKE Awards.
Case study sessions with a practical focus will be interspersed with interactive sessions including a speed debate, knowledge café, and concluding panel discussion, where attendees will be invited to get involved in asking questions, sharing knowledge and experiences, and actively networking, so as to engage with the theme of the conference, "enhancing knowledge culture and discovering new possibilities".
With KM Australia fast approaching, we'd like to remind you about KM
Arena, which will provide enhanced networking opportunities at the
event.
Once at KM Australia, if there is someone at the conference you
would like to meet, you can request that they meet you in the KM
Arena.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself: My name is Cindy and I am now a DBA candidate at Southern Cross University, Australia. My research topic is on knowledge management and competitive advantage of the firm.
At the moment I am thinking of how to do a survey in Australia to collect data for my study. I need about 300 to 400 usable responses and my informants should be senior managers (such as CEOs, R&D managers, HR managers,...) who can understand well about their organisations, strategy, infrastructure elements as well as knowlege-oriented processes.
I can either collect data over a variety of industries or select only a specific one which is much involved in knowledge management activities. If the industry has a website with the availability of its members which enables an online survey, I would prefer
to use this method or otherwise a mail survey is good also.
However, as an international student, I do not know much about Australian industries, which ones are the most suitable and how to contact appropriate people for my research.
It would be highly appreciated if any of you could give me any information of the above issues (industries, organisations, people, contacts... relevant to my research). Thank you so much for your kind help and look forwards to hearing from you all.
Best regards,
Cindy

Hello,
When you have a chance, we have posted the results to our survey we did
for KM Australia 2007, also for your use in a comparison the results
from our 2004 survey.
The results are in a flat format, for you to draw your own
conclusions. We did not include the responses to the opinion
questions, as there are too many.
These results are only posted here and there are some quite significant
and surprising changes that have occurred.

Hello All,
Ark Group has announced the dates and venue for next years KM
Australia 2007, Knowledge, Discovery and Collaboration.
23 - 25 July 2007, Bayside Grand Hall, Sydney Convention Centre,
Darling Harbour.
We have moved it to this locale after talking with the KM community
at large, to see where we can improve on our previous years events.
Where we understand we cannot please everyone, we have done our best
to suits the needs of most. The Bayside came out to be the best venue
to be able to suit all those needs.
Some improvements will be: cabaret seating for both streams of the
event, natural lighting, area's for break-out's, Knowledge Cafe and
we are still investigating the best solution to allow delegates to be
able to contact those they are most intersted in talking to at the
event.
Added to this, the level of the program is going to appeal to all
levels of KM practitioners, and our sponsor presentations will be
Case Study driven.
Unfortunately, to be accommodate these new initiatives, we will only
have limited number delegate spots, unlike previous years. Please
email aga@... to be put on our priority contact list, so
you can receive and special early bird discount that will be
available for a short time in late Jan and early Feb 2007. Also,
visit www.kmaustralia.com as we will be updating this site during
this same period of time.
Thank You

Comment from Patrick Burkhalter:
I would like the focus of KM to shift back towards the human side of
it - e.g. roles of change management, leadership, L&D, innovation, and
how people-to-people activities, e.g. SNAs, knowledge networks, can
achieve organisational efficiencies, etc.
We are currently in the initial planning stages of KM Australia
2007. We very much appreciate any comments or suggestions you may
have which would assist us in shaping together an improved
conference and exhibition.

Demonstrating the value of knowledge management
Promoting knowledge management as a driver for cultural change,
strategic development and improved business performance
Date: 22 - 24 Nov 2006
Location: Sydney, Australia
Event Type: Conference
www.ark-group.com
In a business environment, where knowledge is currency, not fully
utilising the potential of knowledge renders a substantial asset base
useless. An effective knowledge management (KM) strategy drives an
organisation to harness its people, processes and technologies to
support the organisation's objectives and positively impact its
bottom line.
Despite the enormous potential of KM, many organisations are
struggling with the ambiguity of its meaning and the intangibility of
its results. Consequently KM has been pushed down the agenda,
leaving practitioners with minimal resources, a lack of support and
organisational awareness. While KM professionals still see the
urgent need for and the substantial value of KM, it is demonstrating
this to the rest of the business, which is of key concern.
This two-day conference will provide clear direction and practical
strategies for getting KM firmly back on the agenda across the
organisation from senior management buy-in to operational level
support. Covering the process from building a strategy to measuring
its results, transforming KM from complex theory to tangible asset.
Our panel of speakers will explore critical topics such as:
• Establishing a powerful presence for KM across the organisation
• Actively demonstrating the value of KM to gain both senior
management and operational buy-in
• Building a KM strategy that is not only aligned with organisational
objectives but is pivotal in reaching them
• Effectively and appropriately measuring KM strategies to show
tangible results
• Creating a culture that embraces KM to maintain momentum long term
Hi All,
If you had a wishlist of speakers you would like to hear from at a KM
Event in Australia, who would be on your top 4 speakers in this arena?
Also, what are some elements you feel have been lacking in previous
events that would do well to have at an event.
Steven
