Three recent items involving former LSWR lines in Devon, spotted by Ralph
Rawlinson:

Sidmouth Jn - Sidmouth, closed pass 6.3.1967
Devon County Council is considering converting this route into a cyclepath
and walkway.

Barnstaple Jn - Torrington, closed pass 4.10.1965
Because the Bideford site is too restrictive the Bideford & Instow Railway
Group is examining the possibility of relocating further south at
Torrrington.

Barnstaple - Lynton, closed 29.3.1935
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, which at present operates over one mile
of track between Woody Bay (Martinhoe Cross) and Killington Lane, is
preparing a bid for £30m of Euro development cash to fund the
reconstruction of eight miles of the route between Lynton to Wistalpound
(half a mile beyond Blackmoor).

Ralph also advises that the Railway Ramblers website has been updated over
Christmas. In the Photos section, galleries 19 to 23 have been added
whilst News 2007 now includes items posted in November and December.

A petition to ask the Prime Minister to reopen the railway from Manchester
to Sheffield via the Woodhead Tunnel:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Woodhead/

One of the main threats to a possible reopening is that the National Grid
proposes to use the modern tunnel for cabling (there are cables in one of
the two Victorian tunnels at the moment). So there is an additional
campaign for the Secretary of State for Transport to intervene and protect
this strategic route from non-rail use. You can...

Track improvements and maintenance are taking place from 00:01 on 01/01/08
to 05:00 on 03/01/08 between Aberdeen and Aberdeen. Whilst work is taking
place, buses will replace trains between Aberdeen and Aberdeen via
Aberdeen.

And there I was planning a new year rail tour of Aberdeen...

Regelgüterzüge mit bis zu 1600 Tonnen Last, 18. bis 23.02.2008

Abseits der Gewohnheiten des Revierdampf-Teams,

liebe Plandampferin, lieber Plandampfer,

(also
Plandampf pur!)

Steam Clouds at the Rhine River

Scheduled freight trains, with loads up to 1600 tons, February 18 to 23 2008

Dear friends of Plandampf,
At conditions that differ from our usual practise, we invite you to a
special
Plandampf event. The differences are:
- the event is organised at short notice, and will happen from February 18
(Monday) to February 23 (Saturday noon).
- It costs 70 Euros, regardless of how many days you participate. You obtain
the
schedules for all days in any case.
- You are required to subscribe until February 15 by e-mail and successful
(!)
transfer of the participants fee to our Plandampf account (see below).
- The event features steam traction on scheduled freight trains in the
Duesseldorf area, nothing else (pure Plandampf!)
- The trains will be hauled by 52 8154 (2-10-0) from Eisenbahnmuseum
Bayerischer
Bahnhof zu Leipzig e.V. ( EMBB e.V. ), about 370 kilometers per day at
average.
- We don?t have an influence on schedules to make them perfect for
photographers
(angle of sun etc.). The steam loco replaces a diesel and works the
everyday
diagram.
- The information brochure for participants will be distributed by E-mail
only
- The information brochure includes the schedules and some good photo
positions,
but no maps and other useful information because of the limited time for
preparations.

This invitation to Plandampf has been initiated by a contact of Alexander
Schroeter, driver of 52 8154, with the Revierdampf Team. He has arranged the
event with the local train operating company and settled all operational
issues,
so you can look forward to a spectacular winter Plandampf.

Our appeal: Please support this unique and exciting project as a
?door-opener?
to freight Plandampf in North-Rhine Westfalia. The participant fees are
devoted
in full to the preservation of the class 52, while the Plandampf is funded
by
the local train operating company NHE.

Details for subscription:

The participant of 70 Euros should be transferred to the following bank
account
(in turn you obtain the schedules, as usual):

National:
Kreissparkasse Recklinghausen
BLZ 426 501 50
Kto-Nr. 41 46 346

international
Kreissparkasse Recklinghausen
InternationalBankAccountNumber: DE 20 42650150 0004146346
SWIFT-BIC: WELADED1REK

Owner of account: Wilfried Uhlich - Revierdampf-Team - Hirschberger Strasse
36 -
45768 Marl

Please announce your transfer by E-mail ( >plandampf@...< ) and do not
forget
to inform us with this E-mail and with the bank transfer on your E-mail
address.
If the information brochure should be mailed to a different E-mail address,
please do indicate this on your announcement. The distribution of the
information brochure by E-mail will happen on February 15 at latest. Please
make
sure that your in-box offers sufficient space at this time.

With your subscription you accept the conditions of the organiser Neusser
Hafenbahn.

We are looking forward to welcome you on location!

With best regards
Your Revierdampf-Team and Alexander Schroeter

Ralph Rawlinson informs me that a new BBC1 Northern Ireland documentary,
"Raising Steam", tells the story of the Downpatrick and Co Down Railway
Society's ambitions to restore part of the Belfast & County Down Railway.
It will be broadcast on BBC1 (NI) on Monday 14th January at 10.35pm. For
those not in Northern Ireland and have Sky it is on Channel 973.

This is part of the BBC press release:

NEW DOCUMENTARY TRACKS CO DOWN'S GOLDEN AGE OF STEAM

More than 30 years after the line closed, the first train rolled into
Downpatrick station again on 4 December 1987. The return of the engine to
a ramshackle temporary platform was the culmination of years of work by a
group of enthusiastic volunteers. Today, the fully restored engines and
rolling stock attract hundreds of visitors to one of the finest examples
of its kind in Northern Ireland and the only example of a full-size
heritage railway there. For more than a century, the railway network
served as a vital link for the communities in County Down stretching from
Queen's Quay in Belfast to Newcastle, Ardglass and Castlewellan before the
closure of much of the line from 1950 onwards. The programme also uses
archive and never before broadcast archive and home footage to recall the
golden age of railways in Co Down. It also shows how the volunteers have
beautifully and faithfully carried out the painstaking restoration work as
well as the retrieval of the discarded rolling stock from farmers' fields
including the coach built for the royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of
York in 1897.

kaken zelf gaat weghalen.

If you are thinking of visiting Leicester University Library to look at
their excellent collection of transport books, Victorian and Edwardian
periodicals and journals, it is currently undergoing a major refurbishment
which is not expected to be completed until Spring 2008. While building
work is being carried out there is no access to the lower ground floor
which houses the large railway collection including periodicals such as
Railway Times, Railway News, Railway Gazette, The Engineer, the LMS
Magazine, the Proceedings of the Institutions of Railway Signal Engineers,
Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, and Electrical Engineers, plus
original copies of Board of Trade accident reports. These will remain out
of reach until the library reopens. Other railway related books
previously kept on upper floors appear to have been moved to a temporary
location but are still accessible. Access to this library by "External
Readers" (which applies to most people) is still thought to be free, but
you require a Readers Ticket.

Groet
IJsbrant
