BOOK NEWS

"The Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway" by Nigel Bray

The Salisbury & Dorset Junction Railway was built to consolidate the
LSWR?s domination of Hampshire and south Dorset, and to keep the GWR away
from Bournemouth. It also gave Salisbury businessmen a more direct route
to Poole and Weymouth. Almost half of the 18½-mile route was in Dorset,
with less than five miles apiece in Wiltshire and Hampshire. Passing
through three counties, it traversed contrasting landscapes and served a
wide if thinly populated agricultural area.

The water meadows between Downton and Fordingbridge produced cattle, milk
and watercress. South-west of Fordingbridge, the clay soil had given rise
to brick and tile manufacture centuries before the coming of the railway,
enabling these industries to expand and distribute their wares over a much
wider area. Year-round passenger traffic on the line was at best erratic,
but the line provided a useful diversionary and holiday route.

In the circumstances, it is not surprising that the line became a victim
of the Beeching axe in 1964, but since then the population of the towns it
served has grown considerably. If it had remained open, the line would
now be very useful, particularly for travel to Salisbury and the
Bournemouth-Poole conurbation.

the Railscene team. The idea is to provide railway enthusiasts with a
'centre of excellence' to which they can turn to see quality railway

wish. It is a subscription service, but for a limited period, you can

Thanks to those who replied about the model bus for £1.99 post-free.
Predictably you are asked to sign up for several more at monthly intervals
but you can cancel at any time. Reports suggest that cancelling is not
difficult, so as long as you remember to do so (should you wish to) you
can indeed get this model for a very good price.

Thanks also for the feedback on "Hogwarts Castle" - real identity "Olton
Hall" (5972 of course, not 4972 as I said last week). Opinion seems to be
coming round to the fact that it is indeed a fibre-glass replica. It can
be seen at 36 seconds in this video:

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

Fawley branch
The freight only Fawley branch (opened by the Southern Railway in 1925)
was one of the lines that, last year, ATOC proposed for reopening as far
as Hythe. Now a new group called the Waterside Community Rail Partnership
has been formed in a bid to keep the £3m project on track. They are also
exploring the possibility of extending the service to Fawley and building
a new station.
http://www.dharrison.org.uk/index.php?entry=entry100211-172328

GWR Newbury-Winchester
The site of Sutton Scotney station has been earmarked for a 33-home
development with the goods shed converted into a pair of cottages and a
section of the trackbed adopted as an access road.

ECML
The new timetable to be introduced from May 2011 will see most existing
services from Glasgow to King's Cross running instead to Leeds and
Sheffield. In addition Network Rail has agreed to facilitate, (within two
years) a reintroduced Flying Scotsman covering the 393 miles between
King's Cross and Edinburgh in less than four hours.

ECML Belford
Work on a £600,000 platform at Belford between Alnmouth and Berwick is
expected to start early next year. The original Newcastle & Berwick
station closed on 29th January 1968, but the magnificent station building
survives as a residence. Several past and present pics at:

Tyne & Wear Metro
The long-awaited renovation of the grade II listed Tynemouth station has
suffered a setback. North Tyneside Council has refused planning
permission for a supermarket on the site, but it looks as though
restoration of the ornate iron canopies can go ahead, as £3m has been
secured from the Government and English Heritage.

Peak Rail
Restoration of the MR-design ex-Luffenham signalbox is making good
progress at Darley Dale ready for its final installation.

Birmingham
A new entrance has been built at Snow Hill station that will give access
into Livery Street.

Manchester Hub
The highlights of Network Rail's £530 investment package are a new Ordsall
Lane curve linking Piccadilly and Victoria stations (remember SELNEC in
the 1970s?) and two new through platforms at Piccadilly alongside
platforms 13 and 14.

Switzerland
The Berninabahn linking St Moritz, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy, and
operated by the Rhätische Bahn, first carried passengers across the Alps
via the Bernina Pass in 1910. At 7392ft asl this is the highest non-rack
line in the Alps. It also one of the steepest adhesion railways in the
world and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. A
special programme of events will be held throughout 2010 to celebrate its
100th anniversary.

Hungary
Despite sporadic closures since the 1980s, the national rail opertator MAV
still operated passenger services on most lines in the country, including
three ng systems. This changed on 26th December 2009 when the Hungarian
government, under strong pressure from the European Union to make cuts in
public expenditure, closed 26 lines.

Ghana
The Chairman of the newly established Ghana Railway Development Authority
(GRDA) claims that about 100 railway companies have expressed interest to
operate Ghana's railways.

building the ambitious south freight corridor covering Karnataka, Tamil

Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa said on 27th February that
he had directed Railway officials to complete the surveys in the State for
15 new railway lines announced in the 2010-11 Railway Budget, within six
months, so that the routes found viable could be included in the next
budget.

Maandagavond besteedt RTL Boulevard
aandacht aan deze rit.

Manchester Metrolink: So far the first 11 (3001-11) new Metrolink Trams
have arrived at Queens Road depot.  The early units 3001-4 have been in
use on the Alrincham-Bury service, and additionally to Eccles from
Piccadilly station.  On the Eccles route a new triangle has been installed
near Anchorage connecting with a new line to MediaCity.  This was
energised wef 0001 on Sunday 7th March (per contract notice on the site),
and work is underway landscaping the new single line to the terminal
station.  At the moment it can only be seen from a distance and looks to
be a two platform station.  The new trams are basically in yellow/grey
livery - a makeover of many station signs has followed in similar colour
scheme but the lettering is not easy to read.  Nameboards on the
Altrincham and Bury lines have already been replaced at some station
stops.  Perhaps black on yellow would be preferred.  Woodlands Road still
retains the original Metrolink nameboards, this station is expected to
close and be moved to a new location with another name.  (PS - A report on
BBC-TV mentioned the first new tram for Edinburgh was expected very soon.)

On the first Sunday of every month, there's the rare opportunity to travel
the length of Dudley Tunnel (almost 3km) and visit Dudley's limestone
caves on a two-hour trip run by the Dudley Canal Trust.  The caves were
carved out in the 18th Century by the mining industry - the miners used to
haul away 1,000 tonnes of limestone a week.  The tunnel starts in the
Black Country Museum which is well worth a visit regardless of whether you
want to travel through the tunnel.

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

The South Tynedale Railway
Contractors have completed work on three bridges: 46 (north end of
Kirkhaugh station), 42 and 40 (Lintley Viaduct).  Track has been laid as
far as bridge 43, half-a-mile from Kirkhaugh.  The initial target is
Lintley with the railhead stopped short of the viaduct.  The viaduct will
be crossed when the line is extended to the eventual target at Slaggyford.

Sheringham
The project to link the North Norfolk Railway to the national network was
completed over the weekend of 20th/21st February 2010, when the level
crossing between the two Sherringham stations was reinstated.  It has since
been opened:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8562407.stm

Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
Including locos and stock Exmoor Enterprise, the L&BR's supporting
organisation, has costed reconstruction of the approx 8½ miles from Lynton
to Wistlandpound at £30m.

Launceston Steam Railway
Planning permission was granted in February 2010 for the first section of
the proposed Launceston-Egloskerry Multi-user Trail.  The Launceston Steam
Railway hopes that creation of such a trail could bring about their long-
held ambition of extending 2½ miles from New Mills to Egloskerry.

The Weardale Railway
Villagers back coal by rail scheme amid traffic fears. Five daily commuter
services between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland are planned from May 2010.
These will be in addition to the Wolsingham-Stanhope heritage services.
http://www.teesdalemercury.co.uk/teesdale-news/story,2532.html

Welsh Highland Railway
Trains will continue to run to the present Hafod y Llyn terminus until
27th May 2010 when passenger services are extended three miles to a new
terminus at Pont Croesor.

Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway
Passenger trains will start using the 1½ mile extension to Manuel from
27th March 2010.  There is no station at Manuel so passengers remain
aboard while the loco runs round.

Disused Lines
The Conservative Party has pledged to protect disused lines still in
public ownership if elected.  It would introduce a moratorium on building
over them for at least the first five-year term.

Heathrow
Trials between the three stations (two car parks and Terminal 5) have
proved successful and London Airport expects to have its new Ultra Rapid
Transit System fully operational by the summer of 2010.
http://tinyurl.com/ygomnkj

London Crossrail
Initial construction work has started on the tunnel in West London.  A
190m-long box is being built at Royal Oak from where tunnelling will start
in 2011.  Work is also underway at Paddington, Tottenham Court Road,
Farringdon and Canary Wharf.

London ELL
Transport for London is expected to reveal soon which of four companies
has been awarded the contract to design the 1422yd link from Silwood
Junction to Old Kent Road Junction.  This is an essential part of the
project to extend the East London line from Surrey Quays to Clapham
Junction.

Kenilworth Station (via Nigel Callaghan)
The current Railway Herald reports that Warwickshire County Council has
agreed to the purchase of land, which is crucial to the development of a
new station at Kenilworth.  It is hoped that the station on the Leamington
Spa  to Coventry route will be open by late 2012.  The John Laing company
is working with the Council, and has previously undertaken a similar role
to deliver the schemes at Coleshill Parkway and Warwick Parkway stations.

Cliff Railways
In Hastings, East Hill Lift, the country's steepest operational funicular,
will reopen on 27th March 2010.  Hastings Borough Council has spent
£350,000 on upgrading following an accident in 2007.  In Folkestone the
Lees Cliff Lift closed in 2009.

Blackpool Trams
A new study, funded by the European Parliament, is looking at possible
extensions of the modernised tramway to Blackpool Airport and Blackpool
North station.  An extension to the airport would presumably also serve
Squires Gate station.

Tyne & Wear Metro
The long-awaited renovation of the grade II listed Tynemouth station has
suffered a setback. North Tyneside Council has refused planning permission
for a supermarket on the site but it looks as though restoration of the
ornate iron canopies can go ahead as £3m has been secured from the
Government and English Heritage.

Glasgow
Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde University are considering 'freight
trams' in the city centre to serve local businesses in pedestrianised
areas.

Eurostar
The shared management of the Eurostar Company by London & Continental,
SNCF and SNCB is to end.  A new, single entity, Eurostar Company will be
formed on 5th April 2010.

Kenya-Uganda
Kenya and Uganda expect speeds to treble and ten times more freight will
be carried on the new standard gauge line linking Kenya's Mombasa port to
Uganda's capital Kampala via Nairobi.  Due to open in 2013 the new railway
is meant to supplement an existing metre gauge line which was built by the
British at the turn of the previous century.
http://tinyurl.com/ycz2a5j

India
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is building the longest yet span
for a Metro bridge, passing over an operating railway line near Okhla in
the city, DMRC officials said.
http://tinyurl.com/y8rxweh

China
Work started on the 820-mile high speed line between Beijing and Shanghai
via Jinan, Xuxhou and Nanjing in April 2008, and it is expected to be in
service by 2012.
http://www.chinaknowledge.com/Newswires/News_Detail.aspx?type=1&NewsID=31766

In northwestern Xinjiang Uygur province work started on 3rd March 2010 on
a freight line between Hami City and Lop Nur, a former lake known as the
"Sea of Death".  The 230-mile line will provide a faster route to
transport Lop Nur's rich potassium salt, is expected to take two years to
complete, and includes a bridge at Hami City 3,220yd long.

Former HPMRS member Doug Maughan recently wrote to Network Rail regarding
the bridge
modifications at Winchester:

"Three bridges in Winchester are being modified in order to allow the
passage of the
larger continental containers. There is no mention of the tunnelss on this
same
line, just North of Winchester. Does this mean that the tunnels were built
to a
larger loading gauge and therefore do not require to be modified?"

He received the following reply:

"Thank you for your communication. Some of the tunnels are at the required
gauge
which is required to allow these containers through. We will be working on
various
tunnels and bridges over the next year to bring them up to the required
height and
width. Wherever possible we try to lower the tracks, which can be more
easily done in
tunnels, unless there is a drainage problem. We are just about to start
works on
Popham tunnel which is situated near Micheldever station and is the line
from
Southampton to Basingstoke. I hope you find this information of some
assistance."

The Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum (DDRF) today welcomed the creation of a
National
Skills Academy for Rail Engineering. The new academy, announced by the
Department for
Business Innovation & Skills on Wednesday, will receive nearly 3m of
Government
investment through the Skills Funding Agency and has the support of
organisations
including Network Rail, Transport for London, the Rail Freight Group, the
Rail
Industry Association and the Association of Train Operating Companies.

The Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum worked with key local rail businesses to
support
the successful submission for a National Skills Academy for Rail Engineering
and has
also expressed an interest in hosting the Academy in our region. Michelle
Craven a
partner at law firm Nelsons and Vice Chairman of DDRF, which represents rail
businesses across the East Midlands, said: "We are delighted to hear that
the green
light has been given for a National Skills Academy for Rail Engineering. It
is clear
that the development of our skills base is imperative so that we can deliver
the
significant future investment in the railways promised by all political
parties.
The creation of the National Skills Academy for Rail Engineering is the
result of
many months of hard work by people from across the rail industry. Gil
Howarth, the
Programme Director in particular should be congratulated for his key role
which has
lead to today's announcement."

Colin S Walton, Chairman, Bombardier Transportation UK on hearing about the
National
Skills Academy announcement said "Bombardier fully supports a national
skills academy
and fully understands the importance of a skilled railway industry,. During
such
challenging times as these, it is vitally important for companies to retain
a highly
skilled and motivated workforce and to also ensure that the people and
skills are in
place for the future. Bombardier understands the importance of developing
its
employees and has on-site learning centres formed and run in conjunction
with the
unions CSEU and UNITE. Bombardier is also investing in the future and has
established
Modern Apprenticeship and graduate programme, in addition Bombardier is
working in
partnership with JCB in support of its Skills Academy." Once the detailed
business
plan has been completed it is expected that the National Skills Academy for
Rail
Engineering will start operation in 2011.

The 277-mile line, originally built in the 1960s, reconnects the town of

Trains will begin running once the ticketing system is organised. The
feasibility of extending the railway from Wau through three other southern
towns, including Juba and then to northern Uganda, is also to be examined.

Jubileum 75 jaar Trix Express

Start Friese Stoomtrein uitgesteld

Aankomst rangeerlocomotief in Sneek

Koninklijke tentoonstelling in Spoorwegmuseum.

Museumweekeind 10&11 april

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

Docklands Light Railway
The first of 55 new three-car trains, built by Bombadier as part of a £325m
upgrade, entered service on the Bank-Lewisham route on 23rd February 2010.
The upgrade also includes extending platforms to permit longer trains,
remodelling Tower Gateway station and replacing South Quay station. Trial
running over the former London Overground (former GER) line between Canning
Town and Stratford is expected to start in May 2010 with passenger services
to/from both Beckton and Woolwich Arsenal starting in the summer. From
Canning Town new and converted stations are at Star Lane, West Ham, Abbey
Road, Stratford High Street, Stratford and Stratford International.

Brighton Belle
Plans to return slam-door Class 421 4-CIG EMU 1881 to main line running
have been shelved. The four-car unit has instead been sold to the 5BEL
Trust who will use most of its traction equipment and running gear on the
5BEL project. The campaign to restore a five-car 'Brighton Belle' set was
reported in Raildate in September 2009.

Birkenhead Tramways
It seems the tramway has been saved from closure. The tramway and Wirral
Transport Museum are to be taken over by Merseytravel.

Blackpool Trams
Track replacement has been taking place on the Promenade and towards
Talbot Square. The main steelwork and roof of the new Starr Gate tram
depot was completed during February.

Glasgow
The ferry across the Clyde between Renfrew and Yoker is to close at the end
of March 2010 to save Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) £430,000
a year in subsidy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renfrew_Ferry

Glasgow Transport Museum
The Museum of Transport in the Kelvin Hall Glasgow, which attracts over
half a million visitors a year and is home to a collection of vintage cars,
locomotives and trams etc, is to close on 18th April 2010.
http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=7

Many of its exhibits will go on display in the new £74m Riverside Museum
being built on the banks of the Clyde just outside the city centre, but it
is not due to open until the spring of 2011.

Edinburgh
The likely cost of the new Gogar national rail/tram interchange station
is double the original estimate. It was promoted by the Scottish
Government as a cheaper alternative to a direct rail line into Edinburgh
Airport.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gogar_railway_station

Edinburgh-Perth line
Claims by two Scottish politicians that new halts at Newburgh and Bridge of
Earn have been added to the list of strategic transport projects have been
denied by Transport Scotland adding that spending constraints prevent it.

Spain
A new 109-mile long HS line is planned from Bilbao-San Sebastian with a
triangular junction midway onto a 58-mile branch south to Vitoria. It will
include five major tunnels the longest of which will be just under three
miles.

Peru
PeruRail plans to restart its Vistadome train service to Aguas Calientes ?
the nearest station to Machu Picchu - on 29th March 2010.

Czech
State-run Czech Railways will launch tenders this year worth a record 16bn
crowns ($858.4m) for new trains and to modernise old ones. The loss-making
operator is in the middle of a multi-year turnaround plan to modernise its
fleet, raise efficiency and boost competitiveness as the Czech rail system
opens up. New and modernised trains worth around 4.2bn crowns went into
service in 2009, and new and reworked trains worth 4.5bn will be put into
operation this year.

Serbia
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said it may lend
Serbia's state-owned railways operator Zeleznice Srbije ?100m to upgrade
the line between Belgrade and the northern province of Vojvodina, the
procurement of 15 electric locomotives and procurement of spare parts for
the existing electric locomotive fleet.

Georgia
A $100 project aims to divert freight, including Caspian Sea petroleum
products en-route to the Black Sea, from having to travel through the
centre of Tbilisi. The city?s central railway station will be relocated to
the outskirts and a new line will go around a large water reservoir that
sits northeast of Tbilisi. A new highway and rapid tram line will also
replace the latticework of railways that cuts through the middle of the
city.

Azerbaijan
The Baku-Kars railway:
http://abc.az/eng/news/main/43501/html

China
Construction began on 17th March 2010 in North East China's Liaoning
Province on two railways near the border with Korea. One line will link
Shenyang, the provincial capital, with Dandong City, which faces Korea's
Sinuiju city across the Yalu River. When completed in 2014 the 129-mile
line, with a design speed of 155mph, will cut the travel time from 3½hrs to
one hour. Construction of a HS line linking Beijing and Shenyang cutting
the time between the two cities to 2½ hrs will start in July. The 184-mile
line linking Dandong and Dalian (Liaoning's most industrialised city) with
a design speed of 125mph should reduce the present 2½hr drive to 90mins,
and be completed in 2013. If Korea also improves its railway services, it
could take only half a day to travel from Beijing to Pyongyang by train
after the Beijing-Shenyang and Shenyang-Dandong lines go into operation.
The distance between Dandong and Pyongyang is only about 125 miles.

into a highly efficient transport system and to start far-reaching measures
for its modernisation, with the introduction of modern standards,
equipment, and technology.

Minpunt
vind ik de snel gesproken tekst. En geen beelden worden getoond van de
koninklijke wachtkamers in Baarn.
