No matter how well a machine runs, someone has to keep
it on course, or it will either destroy or self-destruct.

and traffic-building and the preselling I've been pro-
pounding all week ;), you can be monetizing right now.

Monetizing is benefitting from your hard work.  If you
are selling a good product, you can get a lot of
benefit, in more ways than one.

It's all under your control.  You decide you're going to
do this, you decide how much of an impact you want it
to make on your and your family's lives, you decide how
hard to work, and you pull in the benefits.  Allah always
rewards hard work that is halal, so biIdhnillah you will
all benefit.

In order to get you started on expanding your online biz

Okay, I hope to close our traffic series today with
the last tip to get your traffic going if it isn't
already, and to get going faster if it's already
going somewhat.

The third biggest traffic builder is the directory listing.
These are not mechanized.  Each link gets reviewed
and categorized.   They are:
Yahoo! http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest
Open Directory http://www.dmoz.org/add.html
LookSmart http://express.looksmart.com
Ask Jeeves http://www.askjeeves.com

Of all of the above, only Open Directory is free.  Yahoo!
and LookSmart are both beyond $100 for submission.  Unless
you have the cash already, you should probably concentrate
on the first two tactics.  You'll be receiving the vast
majority of your traffic from those sources, after all.

Whew!  I cut as much as I could, but there are still some
caveats I need to include for the good of your site's
traffic statistics:

-Do not include links out of your site unless the link
points to a site that has a link back to you.

-Do not go for the traffic exchange option.  It's free,
but it's essentially an advertising ring--and you're
advertising to other advertisers!  It's a futile effort,
one I learned the hard way.

-Do not do any of this with hopes of instant results,
especially if you don't have a time- and strategic
optimizer like SiteBuildIt!, which you can check out
here: http://traffic.sitesell.com/affiliates40.html
Do everything at your own pace, and you will see results
eventually, and they WILL be worth your hard work.

-Do not give up.  Hey, I'm addressing the wrong person;
if you got to the end of this e-mail, you can endure
with the best of them!

How are you doing building traffic to your site?
You have it easy right now if you either have no site
at the moment or have a site with substantial traffic
already.  That means all you have to worry about is
creating great content, inshaAllah.  But those of us who
are in between need traffic, and there's never too much.

The last thing we talked about doing was submitting to
the 5 most significant search engines and waiting to be
"spidered" or located by each one.  Then wait to be indexed.
And then optimize your listing.  This often takes months,
and often you will forget who you submitted to when, and if
you were ever spidered and/or indexed.  Unless you write
it all down, or have some sort of software that keeps track
of it all for you, you will become very lost.

Your next task is to open an account with the pay-per-click
search engines.  There are eight, but of course, do them
one at a time, get to know their quirks, and learn to
optimize as you go.

A pay-per-click (PPC) engine is an engine that allows you
to submit your site to it, bid on keywords that are relevant
to the topic of your url, and be placed in the search
results in the order of your bid placing.  For example, if
you bid $.05 on "car wash" and someone else bids $.06, you
would be ranked only second in the search results for
"car wash", which is good.  You pay the $.05 if and when your
url is actually clicked on.

But of course, the big sites have bid big bucks on a lot
of the more common keywords, so the key is to think of
variations on a keyword or phrase and bid on that.  Think
of as many as you can--hundreds, if possible, for a few
pennies a click.  This is the cost-effective secret to
getting found on the web that I learned from "Make Your
Site Sell", which you can download as a free trial for
a hundred more pages full of ways to get ahead on the Net

You'll have to do this a little at a time, as well.  Slowly
build your list of keywords and phrases, fix you maximum
bid, and submit each one to each PPC.  Or use the SBI! Manager
to speed up the entire process.  All the PPCs are made
accessible from one interface, you get an instant anaysis of
your best bid and position for each keyword, and it gives
you the ability to mass-submit hundreds of keywords to all
the PPCs at once.  I watched it at work and wondered how

results, refine your list and your bids again and again
every day until you're satisfied with your traffic flow.
But you're paying for each click, so you'd best have quality
content that PREsells, or you're wasting your money because
very few people will buy.

Okay, that's enough for now.  InshaAllah, if you have already
got a site submitted to your search engines, you just have
to wait to be spidered and indexed.  If you have been, now
you need to optimize your ranking by adding content and
exchanging relevant links.  If you've done that, then you can
start submitting to the PPCs.
Whew!  It's still not over yet; there are a few more ways to
build traffic that I have yet to share.

It's a pretty difficult to keep from turning into a
salesperson when addressing someone who you really hope
will buy, isn't it?  At least, it was for me.

The ebook "Make Your Content PREsell" that I recommended
last e-mail really helped me figure out what I was
doing wrong.  It was so inexpensive that I couldn't help
but buy it, and it was worth it.  I made enough
money to prfit from that little investment twice over
within a day and a half of implementing the tactics!

On to the traffic, which is the straw you're gonna need
to turn out gold.  To turn out a lot of gold, you'll need
a lot of traffic.  Traffic on the web means the same for
an online business as for an offline business.  It's
slightly trickier to get traffic on the web though, because
it's not a case of "location, location, location!"
You literally HAVE to be connected, and recognized, before
you can get significant traffic of any sort on the Net.

So competition for traffic is fierce.  But you will get
your share if you take the following steps, which I will
have to break down into two e-mails for brevity's sake.
Work at your own pace, and do a little at a time, and
you will eventually build a steady, respectable flow
of traffic.

1. Submit to the major search engines.  You don't need any
"search engine blasters" that will submit your site to
"100's" of SEs.  95% of all search engine traffic comes
through the following 5 search engines:
AltaVista- http://addurl.altavista.com/sites/addurl/newurl
Google- http://www.google.com/addurl.html
HotBot- http://www.hotbot.com/addurl.asp
Lycos- http://www.lycos.com/addasite.html
Fast- http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php
Use the above links to submit your website.  Don't even
worry about the major ISP searches like AOL and MSN.
They're covered under one or more of the top 5.
You can do this two ways: manually submit every page you
want "spidered", or noticed by an SE, to each SE.
Use software, which will often keep submitting until you
get spidered.
The problem with the manual way is tedium.  The problem
with the software way is eventual violation of one or more
SE's submission regulations, since you have very little
control over it.

The middle road?  Save time by using SiteBuildIt! WorldSubmitter
and Submit Spider-List Report.  WorldSubmitter submits,
then resubmits automatically after a reasonable amount of
time, or if you get knocked off an index.  The wait period
keeps the SEs from getting mad, and the automation keeps you
from worrying about remembering to resubmit to one engine
or the other.  The Spider-List Report waits and watches
for your site's listing in the index, so you don't have to.
It will even report the listing, so you don't have to
remember to check every few weeks.  This is invaluable
because you are otherwise mired in the incredibly discouraging
"wait mode" if you do it manually, and in the even more
discouraging "blind-faith mode" if you use a blaster.
SBI! will even analyze your rankings after you're indexed
to help you push your site to the top of its search
grouping.

Now that you have the boring, molasses-slow search engine
submission process taken care of, you can move on to the
much more motivation, competitive and almost addictive process
of linking to other sites, listing in directories, and
optimizing your rankings!

No, that isn't very exciting either, but it must be done in
order to get the most hits to your site.  Someone has to
do it.  You can do it yourself manually, or you can use
SBI!.  It analyzes my rankings and keyword grouping, submits,
searches for relevant link exchange prospects, and continually
tracks my rankings for me.  It does everything you would
do if you had the time, the knowhow, andthe perseverance to
see it through the months it would take you to gather and
trac all that data to your best advantage.

It can be done manually.  Proof: I did it.  And it exhausts
me to remember the hours I spent, the times I gave up, and
the waste of time and effort.

Your next task is to open an account with pay-per-click
search engines, but I'm afraid of overwhelming you with too

already listed, and begin optimizing your search engine rankings
if you aren't already at the top of your group.  Whether
you do it by hand or using SBI!, you'll find that it will
increase the rate of visits to your website.

If you haven't yet built your website, brainstorm as many
ideas for content as you can, and begin fleshing them out by
writing articles, or researching articles to link your site
to.  You're on your way, inshaAllah!

AsSalamuAlaikum, everyone!
Have you written any content yet?  Got any old content
you re-vamped or added on to?  I hope so.  Now we'll put it
to the test.  Does your content say something like:

Need help with your taxes?
We're fast, accurate, and we
offer a free consultation!
Go to the next page to submit
your info now!

If it does, it's an ad.  And what we're striving for now
is content that PREsells its readers.  As it reads now,
the above piece will only attract customers who are
desperate for ANY tax service.  They don't know you,
and they don't necessarily trust your claim, but yours
happened to be the first online tax service they came across.
But the chances that 1 in 10 people who read that and
click "Submit" are very slim.  1 in 20?  It's closer
to 1 in 100 readers.

Why?

Suppose your site is a tax service.  A person who arrives
at your site and reads the above few sentences is not
reassured that you are the best bean-counter on the Net.
On the contrary, she will immediately look for evidence to
contradict your claim.  This is because she feels as if
you're trying to close a sale, not provide a service.  It
will be extremely difficult to get her to click "Submit"
now, because of your bubbling salespitch.  People automatically
resist salespitch.

But now suppose she arrives at your site and sees articles
full of information about filing taxes, editorials about
tax software, third party recommendations, maybe some share-
ware, your visitor doesn't feel as if she feels more in
control of her decision to click "Submit"--and she does.
Congratulations.  At least 1 in 10 people who visit your
site will, too, and maybe more.

This is what is known as PREselling.  Your customer softens
up more with each unbiased opinion she reads, and with each
informative article she browses.  She may bookmark your site
and come back more than once before she hits the bottom
line, and by the time she does, she rusts you because so
much has recommended you to her.

So to PREsell is to bring a customer to the comfort level
they need to reach in order to willingly follow your lead.
If you can write content like that, you are a PREseller,
and you're probably doing very well right now.  If not,
it's probably because you aren't getting enough traffic.
So it's logical that the next tip will be about traffic.
In the meanwhile, get your site ready with some quality
content.

How are you today?  Fine, I hope, inshaAllah.
Look, the following is probably one of the most valuable
tips you'll ever get to accelerate your business, so read on...
I didn't understand why I was getting so little traffic
to Designer Muslims, my clothing shop.  I'd submitted it
to every one of the major search engines.  I'd posted ads
for it on all my favorite message boards (and some of my
sisters', too!).  I'd told my friends about it, run a banner
campaign, put in meta-tag keywords--I thought I'd done every-
thing, but I wasn't getting enough visitors, and only
haphazard sales.
I tried to be patient.  After all, even now Designer Muslims
is only about four months old!  But I began to seriously
research the secrets behind the success of all the huge
sites out there who are loaded with visitors day and night
from around the globe.  I found one common denominator, which
was (yeah, you guessed it!) content.
When I say "content", I don't mean relevant information,
articles, reviews, etc... real material for everyone to find
and devour.  And not only do visitors love it, search
engines do, too.
So I added content: links to my amazon.com affiliate shop,
my editing services, more relevant text--and my sales soared.
What about my comment "No one is looking for you?"  That's
the reality of the web.  When you search, you type in a few
keywords and wait for the most relevent CONTENT to appear.
When it does, you impartially click on the page that
appears to contain what you're looking for, and that's
that.  If your best friendd has a website, but it doesn't
have the content you want, you won't waste your time.  No
hard feelings, I'm sure :).
The same goes for you.  Whatever you want to put on the Net
needs to become a "primary source" of content--one that search
engines and visitors adore.  Ant it can be literally on
any topic you choose.
If you don't have a website, this is your cue.  Sit down and
brainstorm your favorite hobbies, topics of interest, surfing
habits--anything you will enjoy writing about.  If you
choose something you know nothing about, or couldn't care
less about about, it will show in your writing, and you'll
dread writing it.  But the web is all about "quick-and-easy",
so write what you love, and it will be quick and easy, too.
Of course, if you already hae a website, begin improving
your content.  Add to it and make it better.  How?  We'll
see what I mean in the next e-mail.
So content is your first step toward a successful business.
If you're serious and want to start now, content is your
homework.  Brainstorm.  Draft.  But DON'T polish yet; we're
going to make sure you've got it right in the next issue,
which is: PREsell (Respect Your Visitor).

trying.  Adapt what you've seen or read to fit your circumstances.
Try it again.  Learn from your mistakes, streamline your plan, and
try it again.
Notice I'm not saying, "Try, try again."  Don't keep banging against
the same wall if you don't have the right tool.  Your shape of
success is different from everyone else's, and it may take you awhile
to figure out how to fit it into the right niche.  But if you stop,
you'll never find it.  The same goes for if you never start.

What problems can you find that are in need of solving for your
community?  Your family and friends?  The internet community you're

down, you don't have a business plan down.  Take this step first.

If you already have a plan, perhaps you need a boost to let everyone
know that a solution is out there.  If you own a clothing store full
of clothes, advertise online to increase demand.  It may be that the
problem you're solving does not apply to the locals of your area, but
there are tons of people elsewhere who want exactly what you're
selling.  You need to reach those people.

If you already have a website, you have my problem.  No visitors.  No
visitors means not even the slimmest chance of making an income.  You
need to advertise, but good advertising is expensive, and you'll
waste a lot of money before you find out what works, where, how, and
why.

So, yeah, you are going to need an autoresponder.
What's that?  Well, a couple of e-mails
ago I was talking about how we all need a line of
communication to our customers, and on the net that line of
communication is e-mail. Studies show that you need to follow
up at least seven times before a prospective customer will
trust you enough to consider buying.  So we need e-mails,
and in order to make sales we need a LOT of them.
But suppose we have this list of e-mails.  Who's going to
have time to e-mail each one of those people as soon as
they sign up, and then seven times thereafter before they
lose interest in (or, God forbid, forget about!) your product
or service?

With an autoresponder, you don't have to remember.  You just
load your carefully written ad messages that you want sent
automatically over a period of days to every person who
triggers the autoresponder by entering his or her name and
e-mail into the form you pasted onto your website (the
autoresponder provides you with the html to copy),
and that's that.  Depending on the complexity
of the autoresponder, you can promote more than one item,
add pictures and html, personalize the e-mails with customer
names and e-mail addresses, etc., and add more e-mails to a
particular sequence, so that you can hold onto your customer's
attention indefinitely.

Obviously, autoresponder software can get to be extremely
expensive.  But I can offer you the keys to a free auto-
responder now.  The one I use is the free version of
www.getresponse.com.  The free version allows you to build
five e-mails to promote whatever you like, personalize them
with your customer's name and/or e-mail address, and offers
the html you need to capture e-mails from your website.  I've
been using it awhile, and I like it enough that I'll be
upgrading soon, so I can add on more e-mails and promote more
programs.

So if you have a list of people who gave you permission to
send them info about your product or service, you can add
them into your autoresponder and start communicating with
them automatically by signing up for the free version of
GetResponse, loading in your messages, and inserting their
names and e-mails into your autoresponder.  If you don't
have a list, begin building one now by grabbing the html form
offered to paste onto your site when you sign up.

One more thing: Profit With Integrity is also called MPAM,
or the Massive Passive Advertising Machine, and it's not
called that for nothing!  After you go through all the free
business building and traffic lessons, and you're really
ready to begin promoting your online business, you can

account is active you will be able to select the type of ads display

I had an emergency last week, so I kind of lost track, but I'm back
for the last session of our Ad Copy 101 Seminar.  I decided to forgo
the test afterward :), but I will still offer you all the free online
business opportunities I promised.  After all, what is this group
for, right?

Using the Right Word.
Now comes the tricky word part. I'm going to simply list a few words
that are commonly misused, and give you a big break by showing you
the correct way to use them.


1. a/an.
Wrong: a apple; an NATO country
Right: an honor; a NAACP lobbyist
The point: First pronounce the term. If it begins with a consonant
sound (NATO is pronounced "nay-toe"), it takes "a". If it begins with
a vowel sound (NAACP is pronounced "En double-ay-see-pee") it
takes "an". When it comes to acronyms like the two above, this can
get tricky if you don't know how it is pronounced. Next


2. above/below.
The point: Do not use these words when trying to describe material on
paper. If you say "below" and what you're referring to is actually on
the next page, you may confuse some readers. Use "preceding"
and "following" instead.


3. affect/effect.
Wrong: How does this effect your decision?
Right: How does this affect your decision?
The point: The verb "affect" means either "to cultivate" or "to
influence. The verb "effect" mans "to put into effect". Many people
want to use "effect" in all three senses.


4. alright.
The point: The phrase is always "all right".


5. alot.
The point: This phrase is always "a lot".


6. any/any other.
Confusing: The hoopoe was bigger than any bird around.
Clear: The hoopoe was bigger than any other bird around
The point: For both sentences, ask yourself: is the hoopoe a bird?


7. compose/comprise.
Wrong: The mix is comprised of salt, flour and eggs.
Right: The mix is composed of salt, flour and eggs.
Also Right:Salt, flour and eggs compose the mix.
The point: These are pretty tricky. After "composed of", list the
parts of the whole. You cannot say "comprised of"; in the above
example, in order to use "comprise" in the first sentence, you would
say, "The mix comprises salt, flour, and eggs".


8. continual/continuous.
Wrong: God continually watches over us; She mixed it continuously for
three minutes.
Right: God continuously watches over us; she mixed it continually for
three minutes.
The point: "Continual" means "continuing for a certain period,
without break". "Continuous" means continuing forever.


9. ensure/insure.
Wrong: The new homeowner ensured his property. (ensured it would
what?)
Right: The new homeowner insured his property.
The point: To "ensure" is to make certain. To "insure" means to take
out insurance. I have seen the opposite meanings in the United
Kingdom.


10. farther/further.
Wrong: I ran a little further (than what?).
Right: I ran a little farther.
The point: "Further" means extent, as compared with some other
measure. "Farther" means distance alone. Used by itself, it's rather
vague, but you could say "I ran three feet farther" to make it more
specific.


11. fewer/less.
The point: "Fewer" refers to measurable numbers, as compared to some
other measurable number. (Fewer apples on the tree this year). "Less"
refers to quantity or extent not measured in numbers. (Less
charitable than she is).


12. healthy/healthful.
Wrong: Eat a healthy snack.
Right: He weighed the healthy baby.
The point: "Healthy" is a description of your health. Either you are
or you aren't. When describing something that might make you healthy,
use the word "healthful" (Eat a healthful snack).


13. lend/loan.
Wrong: Please loan me a quarter.
Right: Please lend me a quarter.
The point: "Loan" is a noun. "Lend" is a verb.


14. liable/likely.
Wrong: She's not liable to do that for you.
Right: She's not likely to do that for you.
The point: "Liable" means responsible for (I'm not liable for your
belongings). "Likely" means possible.


15. proved/proven.
Wrong: It was proven by the evidence.
Right: It was proved by the evidence.
The point: Without getting into a whole lot of english grammar, just
use "proven" as an adjective (a proven liar) and use "proved" as the
past tense of "prove".


16. towards.
The point: American english never uses an "s" at the end
of "toward", "forward", "backward", or "afterward".


17. while.
Wrong: While this is true, that is false.
Right: Whereas/although this is true, that is false.
The point: While means "during" in terms of time periods only. Do not
use it in the abstract sense in place of "whereas" or "although".


18. who/whom.
The point: You would ask "Who does this belong to?" or "To whom does
this belong?". Never the other way around.

Session 2: The Politically Correct Ad Copy

Sexism, racism and ageism are still very much alive and well today.
That's not necessarily avoided in all writing you come across, and
depending on the audience certain advertisements are trying to reach,
you may even see blatant violations of the politically correct
boundaries we've set for ourselves.
Depending on your tone of advertising, you may be deliberately
exclusive, or you may wish to endear yourself to anyone who reads
your ad.

1. Sexism.
Negative: Man and wife
Positive: Husband and wife

Negative: The male nurse
Positive: The nurse

Negative: Fireman, all the time
Positive: some firewomen as well The point: Man and wife are not
parallel opposites. Man and woman are.
A nurse is not to be specified as male or female. He's just a nurse.
As we know, there are plenty of firewomen, too.

Another point: Do not use "he" in reference to either male or female.
Try recasting in the plural.
example:If authors were published, they were good writers.
Try using both his and her references throughout your ad.

2. Racism.
Negative: Black man in the South
Positive:Black in the south

The point: When in doubt, look up the correct usage. Or try asking
someone who belongs to the group you're referring to which is least
offensive.

3. Ageism.
Negative: The old maid
Positive: The single woman

Negative: Every young buck
Positive: Every young man

The point: Some references to age are dated, offensive and ridiculous
all at the same time. (Who says an woman who never married is a
maid?)
No one is the same as anyone else. Try not to refer to everyone in a
certain age group as having the same attributes.

4. Other?
Unless you want your ad to be blatantly exclusive, avoid derogatory
or stereotypical references to religions or national groups. Always
speak from knowledge more than experience, and research if you are in
any doubt about your claims about such-and-such group of people. It
will save you a lot of grief from disgruntled readers and earn you a
lot more respect from everyone.

How To Write A Sentence, cont'd

Peace, everyone!
This is the second half of the first session, beginning at point 4:

4. The point, the whole point, and nothing but the point
Original version: in spite of the fact that
Revised version: although

Original version: because of the fact that
Revised version: because

Original version: The mayor of New York, who is a fat man,
Revised version: The mayor of New York, a fat man,

Original version:What needs to be done is a better plan should be
drawn up.
Revised version:A better plan should be drawn up.

The point: Leave out any unnecessary words. Delete any unnecessary
words. Delete unnecessary words.
Do not use any filler. Try to write your ads as tightly as possible.
When I say tight in reference to writing, I mean focused.  Do not
stutter with "and" if a coma will suffice.  Do not use a string of
words where one will do fine.  Notice I didn't say "just fine".  I
said "fine".  There are a few exceptions of course, one of which is
expressions.  If you want to use a familiar expression, by all means
go ahead and use it, even if you know one or two words will say the
same thing.




5. You are not Hemingway. Or a prose poet.
Too short: The room was cold. I decided to wear slippers.
Revised: I decided to wear slippers because the room was cold.

Too long: If you join ACME, not only will you have the most
advantages, you will also have the largest target group, and you will
love the support, which is fabulous.
Revised: If you join ACME, not only will you have the most
advantages, you will also have the largest target group. You will
love the fabulous support.

The point: Don't break sentences into nearly meaningless pieces.
Allow your thought to expand. After a certain point, your thought
becomes another. Be sure to be able to distinguish the two so that
you can insert periods when necessary. My rule is that if there are
three commas or more, a sentence can probably withstand some
trimming.
Everyone is terrified of the runon sentence.  But the opposite
extreme is possibly just as bad.  "The ball was red.  It was round.
It bounced" is a different ball than "The red ball bounced".  It
takes a lot of concentration for a reader to stay with a piece of
writing that forces him to stop every five words or so.  But, up to a
certain point, a well-transitioned sentence can't be accused to
frunning on.  My guide is the three comma rule: if I'm not writing a
list, I should not need more than three commas in a sentence, or else
I might confuse or exhaust my readers, which leads to loss of
patience, which is another disappointing waste of time.

6. Are you talking to me?
Original version: A good marketer keeps their focus on the target
group.
Revised version: A good marketer keeps her focus on the target group.
Better version: A good marketer focuses on the target group.

Original version: Everyone is susceptible to advertising. If you're
not, then commercials would be a big waste of money.
Revised version: Everyone is susceptible to advertising. If we
weren't, then commercials would be a big waste of money.
Better version: Everyone is susceptible to advertising. If not, than
commercials are a big waste of money.

The point: You may find it nearly impossible sometimes, but avoid
confusing readers by switching gender, voice, tense, or person
without warning.
Do not shift tenses, voice, person, or gender in the middle of a
piece unless it's clear that one or the other must change.  We're
used to ads speaking to us, and so most of the time this isn't
difficult to maintain.  But when using the narrative voice, you may
start with "A guy told me yesterday" and then move on to "so then he
says".
In conversation that's common and nothing's wrong with it.  In
writing, you can never be sure you won't confuse or distract some
prospects out there, like me.  So minimize that common problem, and
you can be sure you've at least got your reader's attention.

7. Don't get literally carried away.
Original version: It will literally rain money.
Revised version: It will rain money.

Original version: This website is so hot, it literally sizzles.
Revised version: This website is sizzling hot.

The point: Do not bring a metaphor or an expression into the realm of
reality. Neither of the above examples are possible in ordinary real
life, so don't make such fantastic claims.

Original version: This is without doubt the best affiliate program on
the net.
Revised version: This is arguably the best affiliate program on the
net.

The point: Don't make brash claims that you aren't prepared to
guarantee. No matter how much you believe it is, someone (the owner
of another program) is definitely out there to prove you wrong. Leave
room around your opinion and let testimonials and other facts suffice
as your back up.
Don't turn metaphors into concrete instances.  The first example
shows what I mean by that.  If you're using an expression, don't use
th term "literally".  I see this often in ads, and it looks
unprofessional and almost shady to me.
The next point is that your opinion is not infallible, unquestionable
fact.  No matter how much you believe in MPAM or your favorite
business or product, no matter how much proof you have that it's the
best program out there, you must leave room for others.  It increases
your credibility.

How to Write A Sentence

A capital belongs at the beginning and a period goes at the end.
Right? WRONG!
Your sentences are special because every single word in each sentence
will either make your readers join, buy, sign up for more
information, or leave.
The average english reader may quickly lose patience with "I want to
be you're freind".  But a more discerning eye--the folks we all want
for our customers-- are even more turned off by "This may adversely
effect your income potential".
I'm going to try to guide you to the perfect sentence with the
following three pointers.

1. Don't wag the dog.
Passive voice: The sales record was broken by Janice Howard.
Active voice: Janice Howard broke the sales record.

The point: There should never be confusion about the subject of any
sentence. Here, you're pointing out something special about Janice,
who broke the sales record. Therefore she comes first. This is called
the active voice.

It may be obvious that in advertising, all sentences should be
active.  It's easy to see that "You have found the best online
business op" is better than "the best online business op has been
found by you."  Keep that in mind when writing.  It's a time-tested
technique, and pretty much the most straightforward way to write any
type of advertisement.

The passive voice is useful in rhetoric, and in certain other
narrative cases, but in ad copy, you want to be as tightly focused as
possible. Don't make the object the focus of your sentences unless
necessary, or you will create the equivalent of the tail wagging the
dog.

2. Sometimes negative is better than positive.
Negative: She didn't like milk.
Positive:She hated milk.

Negative: He couldn't remember a time when he didn't understand not
being able sit at the table with the adults.
Positive: He had always understood the reason why he ate in the
basement.

The point: The usual rule in writing, which is reinforced in editing,
is to refrain from negative structures.  Try to avoid "is not"
and "was not" constructions, and do not lump together negatives, as
in the second negative example shown, for clarity's sake.  Positive
language is clearer and more concrete. Use it predominately in your
ad copy, so that you are understood.

Negative command: Don't miss out on this deal!
Positive command: Grab this deal now!

The point: There is a very big exception in advertising, and that is
the command "Don't".  One simple "don't" can turn your ad link into a
pointer magnet.  Something about it seems to make clicking nearly
irresistible, especially if you've already got an interested reader.
If you use it sparingly, a "don't command" like the one in the
example easily increases the hits to your ad links.

We always see "Don't" at the beginning of at least one sentence in an
ad. It's difficult to keep from overdoing it, but once per ad is
about what it takes to give a prospect second thoughts about not
clicking on your link.

3. Say exactly what you're trying to say
Weak: Aggressive marketers may in some cases see a relatively higher
payoff than less aggressive marketers.
Strong: Your hard work will pay off.

The point: Fainthearted ads do not sell. Make whatever promises you
can make, truthfully, but straightforwardly. There is nothing wrong
with the first example, but it has too many extra words to hinder
your readers from what you're trying to promise them.

So don't be wishy-washy.  And avoid using two generalizations in one
sentence, like "usually", mostly", "possibly", seemingly".  All of
these will let doubt enter into your ad, and everyone will wonder
whether you have any real faith in your own product.  Needless to
say, that's not a good impression to make on prospective buyers.

Practice, practice, practice!  Can you find any mistakes like the
examples above in your own ad copy?  In others'?  Post some examples
of your ads or others that you've seen.  I will post the second half
of this session later on today, God willing.

Why should anyone bother with FFAs?
The whole angle on FFAs is to own one! If you own an FFA
