Hi all,

I just added some photos of my recently completed Locost 7 with a
Yamaha R1 engine. The pictures are stored in an album named R17. The
car looks proportionally off because it is. I shortened the Locost
chassis by 10".
I have monitored this forum, but have not contributed much. I hope
these pictue help motivate some of you back out to the garage.
Also, Keith Tanner's article on Grassroot Motorsport in the current
issue was great. Thanks Keith for your hard work in promoting the
homebuilt culture.

Minh

Looks nice, Minh!

Can you comment on your front suspension:

What kind of shocks are those? What is the linkage from the bottom of the shock
forward? How is it all working out for you? I wouldn't mind seeing more
pictures of it.

Good looking car!

Hi all again,
I am glad to report that my friends TR-8 was sold.

Now is my turn, to re-gain valuable garage room, I have a car to sell. It is a
1995 Nissan 200SX-SER. 2.0L, 16V, EFI, 150 HP stock, 5 speed with LSD, front
wheel drive. Standard aluminum wheels are included. The car has high mileage,
does not smoke, outward appearance is OK, seems to have structural rust
problems. This would be an excellent donor for a mid engine rear wheel drive
Locost.

Contact me off-list if interested. EskoA@... The car is located in
Westminster, MA USA

Hi Dave,

Sorry to be out of touch for such a long time. The shocks come from a
Yamaha R1 (1999-2003) rear suspension. I have designed it to use the
stock 430 lb/in spring from the R1 rear shock. The actual front wheel
rate is 100 lb/in of wheel travel. The pull rod design allows me to
design a very linear wheel rate through the +/- 2" of wheel travel.
The suspension works OK, but I have not had a good chance to make fine
adjustments on it. The car is darting a bit - probably due to the
caster being at 1 degree. The pull rod is working well.

Regards,
Minh

Hello

The government is up to its old tricks again. It appears the
government (bless them) are looking
into placing restrictions on the use of older cars. This could include
cars as new as 10 years old and would include preventing them from
driving in city centres etc.
The worst suggestions are that for some classic cars you would have to
contact your local council to notify them that you want to take your
classic car out - this would have to be done well in advance of any
trip and include a route etc.
Please sign the online petition and try to stop this.

Hi,

I need to have a garage tidy up and wondered if the following may be
of interest to anyone.I want to shift it as a job lot if possible. I
have put some indicative prices against various bits but am open to
offers for the lot.

A home-built and virtually complete chassis for a live axle version -
which does now have some light rust but has always been dry stored.
Currently it is suspended from my garage rafters. £100

A set of wishbones and rear arms from MK with poly bushes and new
ball joints (although the joints need new rubber gaiters. Are for
cortina hub, live axle version. £50

Sierra column + switches + key £20

Sierra master cylinder and a home built pedal box. £20

Escort rack (I think it is a quick-rack) £10

Yellow grp nosecone. £40

I am near Derby. I have a few pictures if anyone is interested,
please drop me an email

ive been having problems running my blackbird engine at load/ high rpm.
it had no airbox on at all
after replacing the airbox it runs fine.
is this just due to the lack of restriction that the airbox creates,
that the engine needs.
ive considered getting some small trumpets/air filters for each carb.
any ideas if these will make my engine run ok, as the airbox is to
bulky for my car.

The air box is an important part of most set ups.

> ive considered getting some small trumpets/air filters for each carb.

Aren't there any air smoothing devices for the intakes in the stock
setup? I have a picture of someones race BEC with 90° pipes between
the head and each throttle body. This lowered the intake enough so he
didn't have to cut a hole in the hood.

Rejeting does sound like an easy solution. But I would also install
stacks at the same time. You really need to smooth the air out as it
goes into the carbs.

I have a GSXR-1000 in my Locost with the stock velocity stacks and a
foam air cleaner. My engine actually runs too rich and has full power
over the RPM range.

The GSXR has fuel injection but no O2 sensor for the computer. I've
been lowering the fuel pressure slightly to try to lean it out. Right
now I'm running about 38# instead of the normal 43#.

You can see my car at olrowdy_01.home.comcast.net

If you are running without trumpets this will reduce the airflow.

David Vizard's A-Series bible quotes approx. 5% difference in airflow
between a simple stub inlet and trumpet/bell-mouth inlet.

I bet you actually NEED the air restriction that the air box provides.
I have a 2003 GSX600F that's carb'ed. I just put a set of K&N pod
filters on it and it ran like crap. When I hit full throttle at
specific rpm's it would just make a lot of noise and loose power. It
was running very lean with the increase in airflow. Computerized bikes
will do this too, if there is no feedback loop (i.e. an O2 sensor) so
that it can correct itself. The stock jettings usually run a bit to
the lean side, so any changes to the engine usually means it will not
run well.

What I had to do is go and get a jet kit. It was not hard to do and
took about an hour and a half. It goes like stink now. If you are
going to change your muffler setup, port or polish anything, do this
before you do the jet kit, as this will effect airflow in and out of
the engine.

The jet kit comes with new lighter springs and will make the engine work with no

I just rejetted to stage 3 and got an estimated 25% more power .. ITS GREAT and

Hi all,

A silly question but I don't know the answer so ...

With a dry sump system (I have the pump and the sump) does the oil tank have
to be in the engine compartment or can it live soemwhere else and have long
(ish) oil lines to take scavange and HP supply etc.?

There is not really enough space (or is there) in the engine compartment of my
locost to put a standard oil tank (got one but comes form an escort so is
rather tall)

TIA

Nick

There isn't any real technical problem with reasonably long hoses. They
do need to be big enough to prevent any restriction, especially the feed
to the pressure pump. You really don't want the pump to cavitate. It is
a bad idea to put the tank in the cockpit though. If you get a leak the
driver/passenger could end up getting sprayed with very hot oil.
