I believe that in 1991-1992 it cost Strasburg $975,000 to make 475 a daily
driver. The smoke box is a welded one with fake rivets to make it appear "of
the period." I believe the firebox was removed and refitted also.
The Canadian locomotive that came from Steamtown and was rebuilt a couple of
years ago cost about $1.4 M...I read where it's boiler resembled a sewer pipe,
it was so bad.
The Western Virginia Railroad Preservation Society is donating the funds raised in the Lost Engines Appeal to the Roanoke Chapter, NRHS to help out with the restoration of N&W 1118 and the Chesapeake Western diesels. Almost $4000 was raised in the appeal. We will be presenting the Roanoke Chapter with a check for the first $2000 at their open house at their 9th Street yard in Roanoke this Saturday (the 26th), the rest to follow later. I'll be there, along with TWVRPS president Andrew Martin. If you're going to be in the Roanoke area this weekend, I hope to see you there!

Here's the press release from TWVRPS...
TWVRPS Donates Lost
Engines Appeal Funds to Roanoke Chapter, NRHS
September 24, 2009
Natural Bridge, VA:The Western Virginia Railroad Preservation
Society (TWVRPS) launched its Lost Engines Fundraising Appeal in the summer of
2008 to support the rescue of the historic
steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock from the former Virginia Scrap
Iron & Metal yard in Roanoke. In all, TWVRPS raised $3948, after expenses.
In August of 2009, the “Lost Engines” were successfully
removed from the yard, with funding provided by the Railroad Museum of Virginia
in Portsmouth, VA,
and equipment and manpower for the move provided by North Fork Lumber of
Goshen, VA.For their contribution, the
Railroad Museum of Virginia received N&W steam locomotive no. 1134 and one
of the tenders from the scrapyard, while Mr. Will Harris of North Fork Lumber
was given N&W 1118 and the flatcar.Roanoke-built steam locomotive no. 1151, Chesapeake Western diesel no.
662, and the other tender went to the Virginia Museum of Transportation (VMT)
in Roanoke.
Also instrumental in the move was the Roanoke Chapter of the
National Railway Historical Society, which provided the use of their 9th
Street yard as a staging area for both the move
and the cosmetic restoration of N&W 1134.The Roanoke Chapter also traded their E.J. Lavino 0-6-0T no.34 to Will
Harris in exchange for N&W 1118, and took on the cosmetic restoration of
Chesapeake Western 662 for the VMT in exchange for the unclaimed no. 663, which
had been threatened with scrapping.The
Chapter is setting up a dedicated fund for the restoration of N&W 1118,
Chesapeake Western 663, and the VMT’s no. 662.
Now that the locomotives are saved and the long process of
restoration has begun, TWVRPS has chosen to donate the funds it raised in the
Lost Engines appeal to the Roanoke Chapter, NRHS to support
its efforts to restore these historic locomotives. TWVRPS members, including
the society’s president Andrew Martin, and Richard Jenkins of the Lost Engines
of Roanoke website (http://lostengines.railfan.net),
will be on hand at the Roanoke Chapter’s open house at the 9th
Street yard in Roanoke
on Saturday, September 26th to present the Chapter with a check for
$2000.The remainder will be given at a
later date, after outstanding pledges have been collected.TWVRPS would like to encourage all who have
followed the “Lost Engines” saga over the years to join them in their support
of the Roanoke Chapter.
The Western Virginia Railroad Preservation Society is a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the
history of railroading in western Virginia. For more information about TWVRPS, please

While the N&W M2's shared a number of basic specifications with the Class "M", they were in reality very different locomotives. The only parts that I've seen as interchangeable are the appliances and the leading truck. The cyinders on the M2's were changed at least once, but both surviving M's seem to retain their original cylinders. Regardless, it is a moot point unless you are restoring a locomotive to running condition. I can't speak for VMT or the "Railroad Museum of Virginia". I'm not one to say "never", but unless some other more important factors come into place (track to run it on and and a dramatic increase in our bank account) , our plans for 1118 remain a towable (and very pretty) cosmetic display. We have friends at Strasburg, as well as many other preservation organizations, and can hopefully call upon
their knowledge as needed. If Y'all are anywhere near Roanoke Saturday, (or are willing to travel) come on down, see 1118, 1134, 662, and 663. You can ride a short trip behind an N&W diesel, eat hot dogs, and meet "Internet" friends.

are you talking about the exhaust piping? You have to remember that the
475 is an M, the Lost Engines are M2's, with a bigger boiler, so the
exhaust piping may not need to make a turn into the smokebox..
The running gear is essentially the same, the M2's were essentially the
same engine with a larger boiler dropped on. I'll have to look and
compare the 2. At least thats what I read.
I'll re-reply later with more data.
We may need to make a full listing of Museum lines and their shops
capabilities.

I met the lady that ran the "Old Shay Inn" in the early 90's. She was probably in her 60's then. Maybe she simply retired. Whatever the reason, the shay's in good hands with Will.

The engine sat for as long as I can remember in front of the "Old Shay Inn", a restaurant in McClure, Va, about 2 hours north of Bristol, VA. (In the 30's Ritter Lumber had a timber operation in these parts).
The cab was gutted and the steam plant removed and it was supposedly replaced by a diesel engine. I don't know why they sold it to Mr. Harris...perhaps the restaurant closed after the closure of Clinchfield Coal Company's McClure #1 mine....

Steve,
The diesels actually were moved by "dolly trucks" that Mr.Harris made for this move. There are 4 wheels welded to a frame of a turn table (an had a portable generator on the end dolly to run the air lines), which looked to be "made" to fit the bottom of the train. The trucks(wheels of the train) were moved on a seperate trailer! I will post you a few picutres of them being moved tonight! It was really slick the way they rolled through Roanoke! This way the move would not have to access NS property. I think it would have taken alot longer to move them had they been rolled down the NS lines! As there were a few wheels that did not loosen up until they were rolled into the 9th street railyard.
I will post you some pictures of the way the diesels were moved this eveving!

Steve,
The diesels actually were moved by "dolly trucks" that Mr.Harris made for this move.

A) I'm really surprised the diesels *rolled* and NS allowed them to be moved over their trackage. Any idea how much work was needed on them to roll?
B) I couldn't help but notice the picture of the Old Shay in your collection. Is that the same one from McClure, VA? If so, any idea about the prognosis for this engine? I've climbed on that thing *numerous* times as a youngster (and the "Old Shay Inn" was a fairly decent restaurant back in the day!!!)

G,
I have to say I am sorry for falling behind on posting pictures of the work being done on the 1134 and the 663 & 662! I had knee surgery and have been laid up,but hope to be back on this project this coming week! The 1134 has been completely primed and the 663 and the 662 have been cleaned up and look ten times better than they first did when they were moved! I myself got to pressure wash both the 662 an 663! I cant begin to explain the thrill of being part of history and helping to get these engines cleaned up and restored! The guys down at the sideyard on 9th have been wonderful to work with! So Thank you to Gary, Eddie,Rick, Steve, Tony...the list goes on( and I am terrible with remembering names)! Ok sorry I am rambling a bit...but here are a few images I took over the last few weeks of the primer on the 1134 and 2 images of the 662 &663( I hope to have the cleaner images of these two tmorrow night for you all!) bring
moved into the 9th street railyard! Look under the file 1134
I will start posting more as the work goes on and hope to not get so far behind on posting these for you all! I hope everyone has a great weekend! Wizzy

This way the move would not have to access NS property. I think it would have taken alot longer to move them had they been rolled down the NS lines! As there were a few wheels that did not loosen up until they were rolled into the 9th street railyard.
I will post you some pictures of the way the diesels were moved this eveving!

Wizzy

New River and Sunday's trip is to Shenandoah, Virginia, and back via the James
River. This is an Amtrak train with additional privately owned cars. Adult coach
tickets are $145 and children (12 and under) are $95 each day. Information and
ordering instructions are available at www.roanokenrhs.org/excursions.html or by
calling 540-774-0611. Tickets are also available at the O Winston Link Museum
(phone 540-982-5465) and the Virginia Museum of Transportation (540-342-5670).
Well...I'd probably wait until the leaves come off. It's not fenced in and about 200 feet from the main road but the right of way on which it sits was abandoned some 25 years ago....there's a lot of undergrowth (and probably a few natives of the reptilian kind). Its companion is an old Southern boxcar.

Steve,
They still have yet to be restored an one has to be moved from Roanoke to Portmouth. Restoration on the 1134 has begun. It is my goal to follow it from the restoration process to the final resting place. As well as the process of the other engines as they begin the restoration on those for those who are interested. I hope to see the one that was moved last fall an is now in PA? I think? I cant remember off the top of my head where it went. But I plan on getting up that way to see where that one finally sits as well! So the story dont end just yet and I am hoping it is a story one is still told years from now...well one can hope anyways!

I too am a lifelong Bluegrass fan, several of my family members play it, although I can't carry a tune in the proverbial bucket. When I got into Civil War reenacting several years ago I discovered one of the roots of Bluegrass, Civil War music. You haven't really "jammed" until you have heard the incomparable 2nd South Carolina String Band play in person. I've been lucky enough to have sat around the campfire with these guys when they were just playing for the love of the music. Lest those of you of the "Northern Persuasion" be offended, just remember that Abraham Lincoln's favorite song was "Dixie's Land". The Youtube videos don't really give justice to the experience.. ........

I've been lucky enough to have sat around the campfire with these guys when they were just playing for the love of the music. Lest those of you of the "Northern Persuasion" be offended, just remember that Abraham Lincoln's favorite song was "Dixie's Land". The Youtube videos don't really give justice to the experience..........

Steve,
They still have yet to be restored an one has to be moved from Roanoke to Portmouth.

Hey Wizzy!
I'm not sure if you're referring to 917, but if so, she's in Bellville, Ohio, just off of Interstate 71, Exit 165! I pass her often, as I live about 45 minutes north of there, and travel 71 often to visit friends to the south of here!
I stopped to see her close-up, and took the obligatory photos and even a few cell phone self-pix with her! (: They've done a great job, at least it appears to me, restoring her cosmetically, and I'm so happy that I get to gaze upon her often!
On a side note, I pass a beautiful engine on my way to school every day in Wellington, Ohio. I've been trying to find out what exactly she is - she sits on a siding, and it looks like they've been working on her. Not sure what the plans are (I'm guessing she belongs to a local tour line), but I'm trying to find out. I hope she hasn't just been left there, although I seriously doubt that - she's partially covered
with a tarp, so I think they're working on her. This group has made me really get back into this again! (:
This is my first post, so it's nice to "meet" all you guys and gals!

When it opened for me it looked like an aerial photograph from about ten thousand feet,
I could see nothing that looked like a locomotive,
or anything else
