I have a lot to report on this issue.
I'd tried to stream Class 95 and other MediaCorp
stations through their website, which promises
access through Windows MediaPlayer. Even though
I had the latest version of Windows MP, the damn
streams would not start, and all I got was a
"codec not supported" error box. Being the
activist that I am, I sent an e-mail to their
tech dept asking them what Mac users are supposed
to do. I receievd a reply saying to "download
Windows Media Player" and that was it. They were
evidently playing the "bo-chup about Mac users'
game. Oh, I know that game too well!
So I sent another e-mail, this time to the head
of tech support and a few of the Directors of
1-Net, the company that manages and powers
MediaCorp's radio streaming. I received a call
the next day from Charles Oh, Manager of their
Internet Development Unit, and he promised that
they would look into the issue.
A series of e-mails and phone calls went back and
forth between me and them for two weeks, during
which time their tech people suggested all manner
of configutrations, but none worked. They even
contacted Microsoft for assistance, but no one
from MS replied.
Finally, we arrived at the only way that Mac users
can stream from the MediaCorp radio sites: Not by
using Windows Media Player, but by VLC.
This was how:
1. Use VLC
2. Go to File menu and select "Open Network"
3. Select http/ftp/mms
4. Enter the url for the station you want:
http://gold90.com.sg/newradiolivegold90fm.htm
http://class95.mediacorpradio.com/newradioliveclass95.htm
http://newsradio.mediacorpradio.com/newradiolivenewsradio.htm
5. Click OK
6. Streaming begins
That worked... For a while. Inexplicably, even that method stopped
working and now, when you click on the "Having Problems Streaming?"
link, you get a message that says they do not currently support
Mac OS X.
So despite the fact that this company did respond and get their
tech people working on the problem, we're still left out of the
system.
