Dudes and dudettes,

Watch the preview video of Armor Alley for iPhone - the sounds, action
and zany scrolling text sure brings back the memories!
Wish there was a Snow Leopard multiplayer version out there; I'd take
a week's leave and play!

What about power consumption? i'm confused, always thought that SSDs without any
moving parts will consume less power and generate less heat. On the other hand,
there are some web sites which claim that SSDs actually consume more power than
regular HDDs. Anyone able to clarify this?

SSDs should be faster for anything that accesses the drive, in this case,
booting up, starting apps, writing/reading files.
Once these get loaded up into RAM (if you have enough RAM), it should perform as
per normal compared to a SATA harddrive.

There is no 'regular' usage, everyone uses their computer slightly differently,
but as I said for the scenarios you listed, you will find a speed increase in
the loading up and saving of the photos or docs, but once you start working on
them, they should feel the same speed wise.
Surfing activities will depend on your connection speed more than anything else.
Then again, having something load up almost immediately when you click it will
make it feel like your computer is working much faster.

Hi all,

any batch file renamers to recommend?

I am still using Graphic Converter for batch file renaming of photo files.
During the International Coastal Cleanup Singapore, Site Captains
report to my lab in NUS where I have a bunch of mac minis setup.

Would love for them to do the batch renaming and flickr uploading themselves.

Hi

Just to let you see how ridiculous this is ! [ see below this email]

2 - 4 weeks to send a few small envelopes from the usa ?

i sent this order on the 3rd of October and I still dont have the
products.

Why they cant get this to me in that time god only knows .... and we
pay 'way over the top' us dollar to send our products as well, and
still they take so long !

We live in a fast paced country HK in Nano technology and i see they
live in the age of mental typewriter technology!

Now we need to do something about this ....so to start please can we
ask them if we can just get from Taiwan and no more usa postage as its
killing us!

just thought this needs to be sorted out asap
... its a biz, not play time...

thoughts please and who do i send an email to to get them moving/

talk soon

MobileOne (M1) to offer iPhone later this year
Damian Koh | Oct 13, 2009
http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2009/10/13/mobileone-m1-to-offer-iphone-later-this-ye\
ar/

By the end of this year, SingTel won't be the only telco operator to
sell the iPhone in Singapore, ending its exclusive deal with Apple
after the launch of the iPhone 3G on August 21 in 2008.

In an M1 press statement released today, the company said it has
"reached an agreement to bring the iPhone to customers in Singapore
later this year", without disclosing further details.

The service provider will also offer "a range of tailored service
plans" along with the launch of the touchscreen smartphone.

When contacted, an M1 spokesperson told CNET Asia that the company
will bring in the latest available model and that it has 886,000
post-paid customers as of end June 2009. It declined to provide
further information.

According to SingTel, it has sold "tens of thousands" of the iPhone
3GS since July 10.

CNET Asia asked StarHub if it would be bringing in the iPhone, to
which its senior manager for Corporate Communications responded that
"we are interested to bring the iPhone to StarHub customers".
Whichever way you take that, it looks like StarHub mobile subscribers
can only keep their fingers crossed for now.

I may be wrong here, but with HD video, the only difference now is
with the frame rates and maybe there isn't even an issue anymore. The
frame resolution are all the same now.

HD was created with digital in mind from day one in contrast to the
analog NTSC and PAL standards.

How much are those things anyway?

the Creative Vado HD. But my concern is about it shooting on NTSC as we are
mostly PAL-land here. If I'm gonna put this mostly online, and occasionally

There is an officially supported means of setting up an iTunes account without a
credit card

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

The problem is that if you have an existing account which was set up so as to
bypass the copyright cartel's rules, I'm not sure if they will allow you to
change to "None" as a payment option. The account may end up getting disabled
until the credit card number and address match.

Not to worry because you are allowed multiple iTunes accounts. Just create a new
account. You can only be logged in to one at a time, but any previously
downloaded songs/apps will remain.

in the past i could use a Singapore credit card. just needed to supply a US
billing address and the singapore credit card number...

(although in realty, no actual transection was ever made with the credit card.
all purchases were made with credits from itunes prepaid cards bought from the
states.)

Are we is Singapore now still able to purchase stuff from the itunes store? How
can this be done?

Thanks to you both Theodore and TaiKin.

TaiKin - That's a thought. I did think of a similar situation but involved
exporting into CSV format. But I guess using this method means that it wont
continue to sync after the transfer.

Theodore - I've previously used Marks|Space for Symbian too. It was pretty
seamless .. which was why I am wondering has anyone else used the iPhone
version. A side note is that - Address books and calendars were not so painful
as I could get out of iCal and the Address Book Ap. Its the notes that it
killing me.

We did think of using another method was to beam it to an old lappy that had iR
(which is rather difficult to find today) which ends up receiving it as .txt
format and have it imported one way or another to the iPhone. But beaming a
years of notes .. is going to make our fingers cramped.

Chris

Apologies for the late reply to this e-mail but Mail and Yahoo
wouldn't shake hands (until I realised that Mail only works when I log
into Yahoo via the web).

I got a Samsung OmniaPRO B7320 after I passed my existing E51 to my
sister (after her phone broke down). The iPhone is still too expensive
for a poor student like me, who naturally prefers a simple, less
expensive plan. I was mooting how to transfer the 200+ contacts and
the hundreds of calendar entries. Now, I snagged a demo of Mark/Space
for Windows Mobile and, despite the notably slow synchronisation over
Bluetooth, it worked! All my contacts are in with contact photos and
full contact details, and my calendar filled up just like it was.

When I can, I'll pay for Mark/Space and it will be worth every
penny... until I get an iPhone, that is.

Any solution to this? (I still have $25 in my itunes store account, but can't

Thanks to Hanx for replying (and in a much clearer way than I can!) What he
replied is as what I've experienced. Initially I thought the only way to
restore my OS was to do a clean wipe of the HDD. But I chose the "Archive &
Install" option to see what happens. Turns out all my settings, my user
accounts were all intact. Expected the hassle of a PC but well, gotta love
the Mac even more.

But I had to run Software Updates again, and some updates required one
version to be installed before installing another (there may be a faster way
by upgrading the version direct from Apple site but I preferred to go
through what Apple prompts me).

Also, things like GarageBand, iTunes etc, I had to reinstall my upgrades.
And also reinstalled 3rd party apps like my MIDI drivers, something for
synching my Nokia phone. I wrote down all the "standard stuff" (according to
my needs) that I need to install and referred to that, so that I don't
forget.

Most of our customers that upgraded to snow leopard have to reinstall most of
the 3rd parties apps, including our mobile security software.

When the release was made, it caused some issues when skyhook supports only 10.5
but not 10.6. This resulted it the software constantly searching for something
that is not there, and causes some machines to be slowed down. Had to remove
that for it to function well.

So now whenever customers wrote to us, we will advise them to uninstall 3rd
parties software first (if possible) and not just backup it entirely for when
restoring it be more difficult to identify which program is causing problem.

But this doesn't preserve 3rd party applications and have to reinstall
right?

What he meant was to do an "Archive & Install".
Mac OS X allows you to do any of "Erase & Install", "Upgrade", & "Archive &
Install".  Click "Option" at the destination selection pane to get to the
options.
For "Archive & Install", you have the option of keeping the users information &
system settings, while a whole new set of system files are installed.
One more thing to note if you force quit applications a lot, you're putting your
file system in serious danger.  Although the system is not affected by the force
quitting, the same can't be said of the file system.  It is recommended that you
restart the system, or run Disk Utility off the Install DVD to "Repair Disk" on
the startup HD on a more regular basis.

Thanks Adrian, Hanx, Siva. Yeah, I've been force-quitting my
app

(particularly GarageBand) quite a lot. Maybe I should do regular "Repair

File Permissions" before I quit the Mac.

But I must say this for Macs -- reinstalling the OS is waaaaaay easier than

Windows. Plus, my files and settings are kept intact.
