Howdy Mike, that's exactly how the 401-B looked before I added the uppermost
nose stripes, painted the rails and grabirons yellow, and added the
green-and-yellow "frames" to the number boards... When I added the uppermost
yellow stripes, the other stripes looked too "pale", I found that they became
more "yellow" when I rubbed paint thinner across them with a rag, removing the
oxidation. The stripes were still too "pale" anyhow, so I came back the
following summer and painted all the stripes at the same time, so that they
would all weather at the same rate... It was during that trip in 1998 that I
added the air horn... During early 1999, other Museum folk under the auspices of
Mr. Taylor, added the black self-coating metal preservative to the roof of the
F-unit... Pete

Here is a moderator's note from another list I am on. I hope nobody
on this list bit on this bit of spam.
I have been alerted to a problem that so far has eluded us, but has
been seen on other YahooGroups.
An email organization known as "Grouply" asks that you join, and then
use their service to better track all your various YahooGroups and
GoogleGroups memberships - like an RSS feed thing I presume.
To join Grouply, you register with them by giving them your Yahoo ID
and password. Bad idea. Once they have your ID and password, they
hijack your account and send emails to your groups asking more folks
to join Grouply. For a moderator of a list, they could conceivably
take control of your list and do with it as they will.
Any sign of 'grouply" activity on these lists will be dealt with by
immediate banning of the poster, since their account will already have
been compromised.
I have checked this out on several inquiries, and have found that this
is an identity stealing organization. Please do not respond to
anything you might receive from anyone requesting you "join"
grouply.com. If you do, delete them immediately from your email
address book and take steps to further increase the security on your
Yahoo ID account, like changing your password.
If you have any questions about the further dangers of this problem,
you can email directly off list.

Hi everybody,
I'm new to the list and I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is
Craig Heenan and I live in Magnolia, TX. I've recently decided to build
an N scale layout based on the Katy between Dallas and Denison and over
the last few weeks I've been accumulating rolling stock and repainting.
I recently picked up some Arnold/Rivarossi heavyweight passenger cars
and I'm a little puzzled over how to paint them. The time frame I'm
using is roughly 1960-1966, and based on the photos in the MKT books
I've got ("Miss Katy in the Lone Star State" and "MKT in Color") it
seems to me that I can reasonably go with three schemes, although some
were relatively rare, I know.
1) Green with Gold lettering. Not a big challenge, but is there any
source out there for the lettering for these cars?
2) All-red sides. Rare, I know, but I think it would look intereisting
to have one or two. The lettering is minimal, but again, can anybody
point me toward the correct yellow lettering styles in N scale?
3) Red and silver with fake fluting. This is the one I'd really like to
be able to pull off, but I've got no idea how to manage it. I could
wimp out, I suppose, and paint one in its later days where the fluting
paint seems to have largely faded away (what is a good color for the
shade that the silver faded to?). What I'd really like to do, though,
is get at least the suggestion of that fluted effect. It seems to me
that a few years back I read an article in one of the magazines on
doing this, but I remember nothing of the specifics of the method the
author used and I'm not sure that the technique he used in HO would
necessarily translate to N. I've wondered if I could whip something up
on my computer and print my own decals, but I haven't taken that line
of thought too far.
As far as painting those red and silver cars is concerned, I've settled
on Floquil Caboose Red as a pretty good new-paint color, but I'm
wondering what thoughts you all might have about creating the color it
faded to? It seems to me that a combination of white and yellow is
called for to lighten it, but I can't get the proportions right yet. I
also haven't figured out a good way to represent the combination of
faded red and grime that seems so common.
Finally, I'm aware of some of the side kits out there for the
lightweight equipment, but are there any kits that provide heavyweight
sides and roofs? I'm particularly interested in the rounded roofs that
were added to older heavywheights when they were updated to match the
lightweight equipment. I'd also like to find a source for the
heavyweight RPO's which frankly none of the Rivarossi cars comes
anywhere close to.
Any wisdom you could share would be greatly appreciated. I look forward
to being able to contribute some of my own at some point.
Craig

Mr. Webers's layout is very nice. I imagine many hours went into the
design and building of it. The highway's above the trainyard is perfect
and fits the area so well.
Two areas I have always wanted to try to recreate are the 1) The Bridge
next to the Broadway bridge in KC MO along with the area north of the
river and east running to the other bridge which the name escapes me
now.
2) Downtown KC MO but the part where the market is in the time frame
around 1950 to 1960.
If I could recreate anything half as good as Mr. Weber's layout I would
be very pleased with myself.
Very well done thank you for sharing the pictures with us Mr. Stolte.

Katy Fans,
I have been receiving several door prize pledges from various vendors
and hobby shops in the KC area and elsewhere for our upcoming KRHS

I spoke to Doc Snyder of Doc's Caboose, a local hobby shop, and he is
going to donate a HO Scale MKT A B A set of Athearn Genesis series F-
7's with sound as a door prize. Wow.... I expect that the other two
hobby shops may also donate some Katy stuff. If you haven't registered
for the KRHS convention please do so ASAP. The convention starts April
17th and the deadline is April 5th.

I just got an Atlas N scale Katy 99000 Series 50' DD Boxcar.
How "prototypical / accurate" is this model ? I can't seem to find any
pictures of them.
Thanks.

Can Denison's Railroad Museum be saved?
By Donna Hunt
Herald Democrat
In 2006 I wrote a column about the need for a few good men - or women - to
help keep the Red River Railroad Museum open. The museum is located in the
Katy Depot building in downtown Denison.
Delbert Taylor and Vernon Bauer, volunteers, who had been trying to keep the
museum going, were tired and wanted someone or several someones to step up
and take over the reins. Mr. Bauer passed away recently of a heart attack.
Unfortunately the article didn't bring an army of volunteers out of the
woodwork. Delbert does have a very few good men and recently a few good
women have gotten involved. Now he is looking for more of either gender.
Tina DiToma wrote that the museum is in serious trouble but that a group of
individuals working with the remaining people on the museum's board are
trying to find a way to keep from losing the museum forever.
A meeting of the board of directors is planned for Sunday at the museum. The
Denison group trying to save the museum is inviting interested persons to
come to the museum between noon -2 p.m. to see what's there, and to discuss
what can be done to keep the artifacts in Denison.
The board met recently with a representative from the Katy Railroad
Historical Society who made his annual visit and discussed moving the
memorabilia to Kansas if Denison is not interested in having it here. Among
Denisonians attending that meeting was Mayor Robert Brady who offered to
support the group in any way he could to keep the museum in the depot.
Board members were told at that meeting that the museum received a letter
from the Union Pacific Railroad asking for rent payment as well as insurance
on the exhibit and track behind the depot where the "rolling stock," (the
engine, cabooses, oil cars, gondola and other cars) now are displayed.
The board formerly consisted of 24 members and now is down to 12 with only
two of those members from Denison. The others are from the Dallas area. It
is being discussed that the board needs to be reconstituted to include more
from this area.
Denisonians who have expressed their support of the museum include Bernie
and Janette Beckloff, Helen Johnson, Michelle Castle, Mavis Bryant, Cindy
Sutton and Doug Hoover. This group had volunteered to work with the
remaining board members to try to find a way to keep from losing the museum
forever.
Taylor said he isn't even a board member but he lives in Denison and is a
representative of the Katy Railroad Historical Society so he's been trying
to hold things together for years. Bauer was treasurer without much money to
oversee. A new treasurer is to be named at the Sunday meeting, along with
other officers and board members.
The museum was a dream of the late Jim O'Brien, but it has struggled for
years and Taylor said that if something doesn't happen soon, it's going to
chug off into the sunset like the Texas Special, the Zepher and the entire
MK&T Railroad. Taylor and Bauer tried to hold it together because they
promised O'Brien that they would.
The museum houses thousands of artifacts inside the former railroad depot
and presently keeps up the "rolling stock" on the track just east of the
depot. How long that will last is anyone's guess. The scene is a
photographer's delight and people can be seen all the time stopping to shoot
pictures.
Taylor said that a good inventory needs to be established of the items that
have been donated and are on-loan to the museum. There are many boxes in the
storage room that need to be cataloged and put on exhibit. The artifacts
need to be dusted and some need rearranging. With a few volunteers, a few
hours a day could not only man the museum, but get it in good shape pretty
quickly.
The museum was evaluated in 2003 by the Texas Heritage Trails program and
while it didn't receive a very good rating, good recommendations were made.
It was recognized for being located in an architecturally significant
building and for having a diverse array of interesting artifacts and a
brochure, although suggestions were made for improving the brochure.
Just looking at the museum, you can see the possibilities that would make it
a real tourist attraction it if was shaped up, its location publicized and
if it was made into something that would attract visitors.
Many of the railroad depots up and down the Katy line still are in existence
and most house chambers of commerce. Pryor, Okla., Clinton and Sedalia, Mo.,
are three such depots. Parsons, Kan. has a privately owned museum, and there
are others in Cushing, Okla., and Galveston, to name just three.
O'Brien was a 49-year employee and officer of the Katy who ended his career
with 22 years as superintendent of rules. His addiction to the museum
project motivated hunting activity as well as the contribution of personal
funds. He often could be seen out working around the rolling stock. His
dedication to the project was his contribution to Denison's heritage. Keith
Hubbard is another volunteer who in past years has kept the grounds around
the historical marker in front of the rolling stock.
For many years O'Brien and his wife, Velma, or his son-in-law Bill Giles,
who was curator of the museum, could be found there most days.
The citizens of Denison are going to have to show an interest in the museum
or it's going to be gone forever, DiToma said. Sunday could be a red letter
day for the museum. If the interest isn't here, the museum may be gone.

Do you know someone who does custom paint loco work? I am looking on
retroing all my loco's to the Katy Red of the 1960 to 1970 period and
do not have the skills myself to do it. I am going to try doing one
undecorated shell I have if I can figure out what paint to use and
where to get the decals. However my really good loco's I would like
done by somebody who has done it before. If someone could steer me to
an expert I would appreciate it.
I am new to the group having just joined yesterday. I have modeled HO
MKT on and off for the last 20 years. We just moved to an area of the
country that has basements so I am able to build a layout that I have
been dreaming about for the last 15 years. My hope is that i can bring
a lot to the group and in turn y'all can help me in my gigantic
lifelong love.

I am looking for Photos of MKT Flacar 13144 or 13121. I know of the

look for additional photos of both sides and ends if you have them.
Thaks for any help.

MKT Modelers,
I just received 7 decal HO Decal sets of the MKT GP-40 L190 in green
and yellow yesterday. They are brand new sets, not old stock, and I was
told by the owner of Midwest Trains in Bettendorf, IA, Rick, that he
would like to release the Herald King decal line in N and O Scale as
well. Since we are looking at another winter storm in the KC area this
weekend, I will be applying some of these decals this weekend so I will
give a status on the quality if there is any interest.
Sincerely,
