NOTE: THIS GROUP IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE MONTOUR TRAIL OR THE MONTOUR TRAIL COUNCIL.

This group is dedicated to preserving the history of the Montour Railroad, a coal-hauling shortline that operated in the areas south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between 1877 and 1985. As part of our effort to memorialize the Montour, the group is also open to discussion about the coal mines, industries, communities, and interconnecting railroads along the Montour's route. There are no membership requirements other than an interest in preserving the memories of our "Old Friend."

A map of 1884 shows the misnamed "Montour Run R.R." and the coke ovens of the Imperial Coal Company, along with the company's first two coal mines. Oddly, the map also shows the future Jefferytown (today's Enlow) tunnel at "Jeffrysville." The dotted line shows the approximate locations where the Pittsburgh Coal Seam outcropped along Steubenville Pike. Also note that Groveton, where the Pittsburgh and Moon Run RR interchanged with the P&LE, was called "Moons Run." It would be safe to assume that the map probably was not verified in the field before publication.
