Only reason I ask, is that Gene and I are in agreement that the colors
are yellow and blue. However, the curator of the museum, (the locomotive's
owner), wants to be 190%
sure before the paint is ordered and paid for and applied. I think she is
afraid of some purist/tourist coming in down the road and complaining the
colors are wrong. I hope
i can count on your support next summer as we reach in our wallets to
contribute to get
this artifact repainted in true "Louie" colors. Talk to you later. You and
yours have a nice holiday.

Tom, I used the picture from Gene's book to paint my 546 blue and yellow. I
have not heard any definitive information. Color is subjective anyway,
right? So why do I work so hard to get the right color?! Joe

Joe:
Do you have any info on the actual paint scheme for the RS-1 at MOT. As
the argument continues, we have heard white, Blue and yellow to Purple Gold
and white.
Thanks for your help, as we need this info to get the RS1 repainted into
actual as delivered MSTL colors. Loco is 214.

Louie Liners,
If I remember correctly, I think I worked Doug's layout during the first
(or close to it) operating session. This is a really neat layout!! Mason
City nedds four operatos alone. I worked as yard engineer and yardmaster(we
switched part way through) at Mason City and had a great time. If you get a
chance, go see or work on this one.

M&StL fans, forget to mention the Iowa Central is located Rockwell City,
Iowa. We currently are issuing trackage rights to the Wyoming Central of
Kurt Stoebe, while his mainline is having a few bridges installed.
Would there be interest in a special M&StL "tour" operating session during
next year's C&NW Historical Society meet in Ames, Iowa? I live about 75
miles from Ames. Stoebe and I could offer some nice M&StL modeling "flavor".

Sean:
Actually your what/ifs are not all that farfetched. Back in the days of
steam, the M&STL and the Wabash had a joint passenger train using
heavyweight cars and steam power that ran from Minneapolis thru Marshalltown
and Oskaloosa to Albia
where they connected with the Wabash. They then ran east to St Louis. I am
sure Gene
Green could assist with train names, car types, and schedules. For your
info, (and anyone else interested), my modern M&STL roster consists of a
pair of F45's in the updated Schroeder red/white. I also have a F7-B unit
painted as if it came out of EMD
with the M&STL logo in the units mid section, also red and white. I have a
GP35, and a GP60 painted in an updated Schroeder red and white. In car types
I have an International type bay window caboose in red and white along with
an International type
extended vision in red and white. I also have a Budd RDC coach that was the
remaining car from the Gas-electric era.
My streamliner train is a joint M&STL/Wabash train that is the
modernized version
of the heavyweight train from the steam era. It has Athearn Budd cars and is
currently
pulled by the A-B-A set of red/white F7's. But I am debating whether to pull
the train
with E-8's or PA's. I would have one from each company, similar to teh
former CB&Q
CRI&P joint train that ran from Minneapolis to St Louis. The cars are mixed
in ownership between the two carriers and all cars and engines run straight
thru.
You see Sean, in my basement the M&STL modernized in 1960, and
completely
became a tough competitor in the regions and became strong finantially.
Also I kept the models 4-axle as I surmised the 'Louie" probably wouldn't of
gone six axle. My
version is deep into intermodal, and has ABS/CTC over the whole system. I
currently
model the Marshalltown-Albia portion. It's nice to hear I am not the only
one who
"what/ifs".

Gee, Doug:
Makes me wish I still lived in Colorado Springs! Too bad your "what if",
era, ends
at 1949. My M&STL F45's would look great going thru the college grounds at
Grinnell,
slowing for the Rock Island interlocking. Or better yet, having my joint
Wabash/M&STL
Budd streamliner with F7's in Red and White cruising thru the countryside on
it's way to
St Louis pulling into Albia to change from M&STL to Wabash track.
Who says you have to stay pure.

In response to the current discussion of "what if" modeling.
I am modeling the Iowa Central, the original line in Iowa from Albia to
north of Mason City, plus the all important Oskaloosa to Peoria eastward
Extension. My time frame is 1949, with hopes to backdate to 1939. But my
twist is the CB&Q purchased the IaC from Ed Hawley, shortly after it
purchased the Colorado and Southern from him.
I currently have 30 72" x 30" sections set up for an HO layout. Track is in
place for the main line Mason City to Albia, with a line for staging to
Peoria. Towns include Mason City (with Deckers) Ackley, Marshalltown,
Grinnnell, Oskaloosa, Eddyville, and Albia. We began operating this past
summer. Yards are at Mason City and Albia, a wye will be in place at
Marshalltown leading to staging.
The CB&Q ownership allows me to use an updated Iowa Central scheme, ala C&S;
M&StL schemes, plus CB&Q. Also interchanges of MLWK at Mason City, Ill
Central at Ackley, C&NW and CGW at Marshalltown, Rock Island at Grinnell and
RI & CB&Q at Oskaloosa, plus the Q and Wabash at Albia.
Next operating session is Sat, Nov 27th at 1pm. We are always looking for
Boomers on the "Hook and Eye".
ON a different NOTE: M&StL fans BC Junction now has the M&StL round Peoria
Gateway logo ready for Embroidered shirts. This is the same company that
does the C&NW Historial Society shirts. Gene Green assisted in getting the

Greetings,
I noticed Tom Kaufman mentioned painting latter day locos in M&StL schemes.
This is a good way to keep the Louie alive on the layout! I was wondering if
others also model the M&StL, and if they incorporate "what if" scenarios into
their hobby.
For instance, I model in HO scale, mainly M&StL and Rock Island, circa
1950-1959. My "what ifs" include CGW/KCS run-through freights, and
M&StL/Wabash combining some freight and passenger operations. This way the
M&StL can actually reach St. Louis. Of course, if I decide that these lines
"merge", the CGW and M&StL will continue to keep their names.....ah if only
that had been so.....and give CNW a run for their money!
No offense to any diehard North Western fans out there. I limit CNW presence
on my layout to a sole CNW loco (Proto 1000 F3), which detours on M&StL rails
from time to time.
Hope to hear of others' modeling experiences and ideas!
Regards,
Sean Olin

Paul:
I work for BNSF and I model the M&STL from Marshalltown to Oskaloosa. I
spent
my youth in Grinnell so remember seeing M&STL F's running thru Grinnell when
the through freights were still running. I also model the interchange
between the CB&Q
and the Wabash at Albia. I haven't modeled the trackwork inch for inch but I
get the M&STL flavor by painting equipment in the schemes pertinent to the
era in question.
In fact, some of my equipment is from an era the M&STL never saw, as In
my basement the M&STL survived as an independent and a competitor to the CNW
and CGW.

Greetings Louie listers,
My name is Paul Michelson and I am new to the list. My memories of the
St. L are none, but I have a real attatchment to the road none the less. I
spent the early years of my life growing up in Britt, Ia. Our house was but a
half block from the Fort Dodge-Albert Lea line. My father would take me to
the tracks to watch the local switch when they were in town. I remeber many a
summer day waiting in the Britt depot passing the time with the friendly
agent, Eldon Darling, who tolerated questions and interuptions from my
brother and me. This was all during the 1970s of course, so CNW was running
the show, but Louie flavor was still about in the form of the train order
board on the roof, to the lamps on top of the switch stands. I look foward to
learning more about the St. L on this list.
Paul
From the June 1963 "Switch Lamp" from Don Hofsommer of Fairfield:
All former M&StL properties were formerly well-marked with either an M&StL
Herald or a bold Minneapolis and St Louis sign. They have all been removed by
B&B men and shortly C&NW heralds will be hung. If you want to get pictures of
the old properties without the North Westernism, better get them soon. The
large division office and depot building at Oskaloosa has been removed by
wrecking crews and only the memories of the wonderful old building adorned with
IC at the ends of the gables glow in the minds of those who revered the
structure. C&NW has traded in all of the M&StL 'covered wagon' F units. the
last one went in February. The 700 class Geeps have been returned to the former
M&StL Division and the Twin Cities division has handed down some F-7 units to
round out the main line roster. The painter at Marshalltown is giving the red
M&StL Geeps and the venerable Alcos a fresh paint job of green and gold, and it
is only a matter of weeks before all the M&StL power will be carrying the C&NW
markings, with a little M&StL notation beneath....

Sean:
Next time you speak with Gene, give him my regards. I don't know if
you are aware of this or not, But I am associated with a St Louis chapter of
the CNWHS and they are very interested in repainting the
RS-1 546 Former 213) back to the original color scheme. Gene is also aware
of this group and had agreed to help us in convincing the Museum of
Transport on a scheme to repaint. I personally was convinved in talking to
the acting director last year, that they wanted to go with the Blue/gold
scheme? I think that is the right one. If I remember I will go out there
again today and speak to them, and get a clarification and report back to
you.
Also, I would like to put out a fundraising effort thru the MSTL onelist
site for funds to cover the cost of paint, heralds, etc. This will be a
joint fundraising effort with the CNWHS. If we wait for the museum to paint
it it will be several years down the road. There is a group here if we get
the color scheme controversy solved, paint and hearald purchased
and funds allocated, to do this Summer of 2000. Also would have it ready for
the St Louis Chapter CNWHS convention scheduled I believe for 2000.
For your information, the RS-1 was sold to a grain elevator here in
St Louis, after being retired by the M&STL, and was a flood of 93 casualty,
so is no longer operational. I will recheck, but the museum
said at last check, traction motors and prime mover were damaged in the
flood. It would be nice if thru the joint efforts of the MSTL onelist and
the CNWHS we could contract it out and get the loco operational again. Just
thought I would jump in and notify you of a actual preserved MSTL
Locomotive, we could bring back to original factory colors.
Any inquiries send to :

Please be aware I am a working railroader on the BNSF, so I may not
answer your e-mail for a day or so. Also I mentioned fundraising. Be advised
I have no fund set up so please refrain from sending donations
until I talk with the Society and set up a fund jointly with them. That way
we will have every thing in place and can get the loco repainted.
Thanks for your interest.
P.S. We need to push and get Gene, to Join Onelist after we convinvce
him to go on-line. I have tried Sean maybe you can give him the final
push to get him e-mail access. He would be a great asset to the group. Also
I would poll the CNWHS as several members are on line and maybe don't know
we exist.

Christian, Please see message below that I sent to Sean Olin. Post to your
website if you judge it appropriate. Gene
Sean,
I am looking for exactly the same information as you. I, too, have Atlas locos
to paint.
I have the M&StL Authorization for Expenditure files (AFE) on loan for all of
the early Alco RS-1 purchases. There is absolutely no color
information whatsoever. The colors you seek are also being actively sought by
the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis and
they
haven't found it either. (They have the former M&StL 213 - ex-546 - and the
curator is very insistent that the locomotive will be returned
to
original M&StL colors but only when the proper paint matches are discovered.)
The M&StL locomotive files were pretty badly
plundered
by the senior M&StL employees at the time of the merger but what remains is in
the C&NWHS archives. I've looked through them and
there is nothing there to help us either. There is a fellow in Michigan - a
former Alco employee - who has extensive Alco files and
knowledge. He has nothing on the M&StL locomotives. I've checked with Don
Hofsommer - the other M&StL expert - and he has
nothing. He does, however, describe 244 (200), 546 (213) and 646 (214) as being
purple and gold. He was rather emphatic about that!
Don is an M&StL fan since childhood and was an early track side photographer.
An M&StL fan who grew up in New Ulm also
remembers
them as purple also. I think at this point it is fair to say that you are free
to do whatever you think best. Who can argue with you?
Do you have a source of the proper M&StL herald for the cab sides? I have the
art work all done for them as well as several other
M&StL
multi-color heralds but currently have a software problem between my CAD program
and my ALPS printer. Once that is solved I will be
able to output the proper decals.
Atlas did their M&StL model based on my book and the center-fold in TRAINS.
TRAINS made a judgement on the color. They have
no
better insight than either you or I. Did you notice that TRAINS got the herald
wrong and Atlas repeated that? Atlas has not ruled out
another M&StL Alco RS-1 but it very likely will be the red and white.
I realize that all the foregoing is absolutely no help to you at all but that is
the state of the research on this topic to date.

Hello List,
I am one of the new members mentioned. This list is of interest to me since
I grew up in Albert Lea, Minnesota. I am too young to have known the "M and
Saint L" but I did spend countless hours as a teenager watching the C&NW
switch the old M&StL yard located just north of the Milwaukee Road diamond.
The yard was still very active at the time (early '80's). Although my
modeling interests focus mainly on C&NW and Milwaukee Road in the late '70's,
I do have a great interest in learning more about the M&StL in their final
decade.
Best regards,

Hello,
I am planning to paint an HO Scale RS-1 in the M&StL RS-1 Scheme 1, which was
the blue/yellow scheme. The only source for true colors I have seen (other
than the few slides I have) is Gene Green's book, "Minneapolis and St. Louis
in Color". It is an excellent source for paint schemes, but the photo of
#546 isn't quite clear enough. Does anyone have photos of models they have
completed, or the real thing, in this paint scheme? What paint color have
people used when modeling the blue?
Regards,
Sean Olin
MSTL4ever@...
Just looking the past few days we have more new members.
I would like to invite them to introduce themselves to the list.
Anybody on the list have thoughts on their favorite version of the RS1 paint
schemes? Remember there are 10 to choose from to onclude the few that made it
into the Red/White "schroeder scheme".
Looking at Gene Green's book you can get a good gauge of them. There also was
an article in the Chicago & Northwestern Hist. Soc. Northwestern Lines where
Gene got his information.
Model Railroader recently had an article about painting an Atlas RS1 into the
Red/white scheme.
thank you al for your interest in the M&StL and if you have any requests for
information, or information you'd like to share... go ahead and post it.

I was raised in Steamboat Rock on the main line of the M&StL. A little of the
original grade of the Eldora Coal and RR line still exists but trains seldom run
to Steamboat Rock today. My grandfather came to SR as agent for the Iowa
Central and I still have his hat badge and uniform buttons. His back yard
abutted the tracks so I have many experiences seeing steam, doodle bugs, etc.
I remember as a youngster being frightened of the steam engines making a run for
the hill east of town. Many are the times that I put mail on the RPO section of
the doodle bug when my dad wanted to send a special order to a wholesaler. The
train was often late but always got there eventually. When the train came off
we were promised a better mail service with the star route. During the first
month of star route service no mail arrived one day because the driver's wife
had a baby. Perhaps that was evidence of the good service promised. The depot
was one of the first built on the line. I can still smell it in my mind. The
pot-bellied stove had Iowa Central cast into the metal. Enough ramblings for
today.

Chris:
I am a modeler of the M&STL who models from 1949 to present. I
run the gamut from F's to GP60's, as I surmise with fellow modeler
Gene Green that the "Louie" probably would of stayed with 4 axle
power. Although a fellow modeler wondered what a set of F45's would
look like in red and white so i painted a set.
I also have a streamliner in silver with a mix of Wabash/M&STL cars
as they had a joint passenger train in the 30's. I just kept it going! This
train is powered by a set of EMD F7's in a red and white ABA combo
but there is plans to upgrade to E's around Christmas time, most likely
E9's in red and white. Maybe one in red and white and one in Wabash
blue to be like the Rock Island?Burlington joint train from Minneapolis
to St Louis.
I am also glasd for this group and hope it flourishes. Let the CNWHS
know and maybe the list will grow.
Be advised if anyone is in the St Louis area, we have a RS-1 that
is at the Museum of Transport that needs a paint job. We are soliciting
volunteer and donations thru the local CNWHS chapter in St Louis to
do this next summer. The museum wants the unit repainted in a scheme
similiar to the Life-Like RS-1 Scheme. Any assistance is appreciated.

I did some checking today and we are 16 in number.
Welcome everybody! Feel free to share or start a topic for discussion.
We have 2 good requests out there.
1. Re: the paint scheme of the blue RS1's.
The drawing does not do justice to the blue scheme. But it makes me wonder and
ask the list:
WHAT is YOUR favorite color scheme of the RS1's?
Personally I like the blue, too. Anybody else?
2. Joe B. should be thanked for inspiring the MStL List. He deserves a great
deal of credit for initiating the US mail list for Louie fans from all over. It
fills me with joy at the knowledge there are so many wishing to preserve the
M&StL.
HOW many list members are modelers?
Those with a layout or planning one WHAT scale ( HO, N, etc.) do you model
in?
What section(s) of the Louie do you favor? What time period.
I am planning to do the line from Albert Lea to Marshalltown eventually, but
realistically I will cut it to Mason City, then go for Ackley, in N-scale.
I like the diesel age and plan to add time to the M&StL lifespan by putting
second generation diesels in the roster.
I had tinkered with a short trackplan based on the Story City Branch article
from CNWHS NWL, in the steam age there was a picture of a 4-4-2 at Zearing that
had me looking for a suitable unit.
I have not lettered any units or cars yet.
Thanks for all the interest. Time to hear from you!! Chris Bell (interim)

Hello all,
My name is Sean Olin, and I am a fan of both the M&StL and the Rock Island.
I have been interested in the history and HO scale modeling of both railroads.
I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and to this day keep track of what ex-M&StL
lines are still in use. My wife and I now live in Florida, so I am thankful
for resources like the Chicago and North Western Historical Society, as well
as lists like this one and various web sites.
My model railroad layout is under construction, but it is loosely based on
interchange operations between the M&StL and the CRI&P in the early 1950s.
That way I can have power from both lines running around. Having found very
little in readily available paint schemes, I have custom painted and lettered
a set of M&StL FTs in as-delivered livery (#545), as well as a 44 tonner and
a gas-electric. I am interested in finding out what RS-1 schemes others have
tackled. I have the new Atlas RS-1 #845, and would like to do some of my own
now, as I have the decal sets, and some older Atlas RS-1s that I don't mind
repainting and relettering (KCS, SP&S). Does anyone have color photos of
#244, 546, or 646? The blue/yellow/gray scheme. The one photo from
"Minneapolis & St Louis in Color" of #546 is too dark to see the colors
clearly.
Well, I hope I haven't rattled on too long. It is good to know others also
have an interest in this fine railroad. It is really too bad it got
swallowed up so early on. I was not even born yet! So, my views of the
Louie are purely from photos, articles, and walking the remaining
right-of-way when I visit Iowa each year.

Sean Olin

Hi, my name is Joe Binish. I have been a fan of the Louie for about six years.
my main interest is in modelling a part of the line, possibly the Cedar Lake/
Hopkins area. I have some great maps that show track and buiding
configurations. Any info or ideas would be welcomed. I also am a custome
painter, having done 6 RS-1s in the delivery schemes, 8 F units, 2 SD-7s and 2
NW-2s. At present I am working on a 44-tonner abd another RS-1. These two will
be for sale (HO scale) if any one is interested. My wife and I live in Golden
Valley MN, and have 3 kids. Does anyone know if the Accurail boxcar red USRA
hopper is accurate for thLouie pre-1956? Regards, Joe Binish
The Iowa Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will meet Oct. 23
and 24 at Boone Iowa. HQ is at the American Inn motel on South Story Street.
Most of the activity will be at the B&SV and the UP main line. The group and
guests will ride the Wolf Train at 12:30 Saturday. The Charles City Western car
50 runs both days as does the regular steam trains. The evening dinner and
meeting is scheduled for 7PM followed by a program by yours truly on the M&StL
and the FDDM&S.

Welcom members of mstl@onelist.com!!!
at present we have 4 of us and I am hoping to see a few more soon. We are
interested in sharing info on the M&StL railway, Iowa Central, the former
lines of M&StL in the present, including time under the C&NW. Prototype and
proto-fictional information are welcome to be shared on this site. Please keep
it on subject and friendly.
perhaps a brief message about yourself and your interest in M&StL would be a
good way to start.
