Interesting article in USA Today [here are the highlights] ...
As women take entrepreneurship's lead, marketers from banks to tech companies are tapping black women as a new source of revenue. "It's a huge opportunity," says Angela Burt-Murray, editor in chief of Essence, a leading lifestyle magazine for black women.
Black women are launching companies for many of the same reasons spurring other women. They've gained corporate experience, but a glass ceiling keeps them from rising to the CEO's office. They're better educated. Self-employment offers more flexibility to care for children and aging parents.
...
Black women owned 547,341 companies in 2002, up 75% from five years before, when the Census Bureau last counted. The number owned by men rose a smaller 29%, to 571,670, says the study by economist Ying Lowrey in the SBA's Office of Economic Research.
...
Black women, like all female owners, still lag behind men by some key measures. The majority of their companies are part-time ventures, often run from home at night or on weekends to supplement daytime pay. Just 5% had employees, vs. 10% for black men. Annual revenue averaged about $39,000, vs. $114,000 for black men, Lowrey's research shows.
If you are a sista who knows how to make some extra cash on the side, you should submit the details of your business to Essence Magazine's: Side Hustle column. You could get a free plug in one of the best Magazine publications for African American Women. And for those of you looking for a Side Hustle, pick up a copy of Essence today. You might find a way to cash in on your skills.
The Founder and National President, Yolanda Lamar-Wilder, Entrepreneur Extraordinaire states, “truly this new women’s organization is much needed for the Greater Cleveland area. I am truly honored and blessed to have implemented an organization of this magnitude to assist women in the business arena. I wanted to establish a presence in the Cleveland area of a resource women’s center, to offer women of each business entity a place to bring their ideas, learn the nature of doing business and help our community by creating more opportunities for women.”

How To Transition From a W-2 to a 1099 With Direct Selling/Network
Marketing
By: Idette Vaughan
"Fortune Magazine" states -- "Forget the paycheck; your W-2 days are
over. It's a 1099 world now."
What a profound statement! The fact of the matter is with corporate
downsizing and outsourcing, no employer offers the job security our
parents and grandparents enjoyed years ago. All of our lives we have
been told to go to college and get a good job. Well, we've gone to
college and many have acquired good jobs, but jobs are here today and
gone tomorrow. Enron and others is a good example of that.
We need to take a more proactive stance on acquiring enough income
now so that we can enjoy our retirement years or if we want, retire
early. Let's face it -- how many of us really want to work until
65? I know I don't! Currently I am trapped and must continue
working -- I am in an endless cycle and there is no financial freedom
in sight. If I stop working now, I have no income. Too young to
receive Social Security, and tapping into retirement funds would be
detrimental -- the penalties are too great to cash in now. So what
to do? Find a company where I will be able to enjoy "Residual
Income." Yes, residual income -- and guess what? The direct selling
model offers residual income! AmeriPlan is one company that I
personally know offers residual income -- imagine signing up one
Independent Business Owner or Member today and as long as they stay
with the company you will be paid a commission month after month,
year after year. How awesome is that!
If you have doubts about joining and embracing direct selling/network
marketing-- what do the following respected business owners,
companies and authors all have in common?
Virgin Cosmetics Company, Lillian Vernon, Time Warner, Citigroup,
Robert Kiyosaki, David Bach and Stephen Covey
Answer: All have embraced "Direct Selling!" Perhaps you too should
look more closer at Direct Selling. And please look at it with an
open mind. Forget the misconception that Direct Selling is a pyramid
scheme. Direct Selling is selling by word of mouth. We refer to
people everyday and don't even realize it. What was the last movie
you saw? Did you like it? Did you suggest to a friend "hey I
saw "The Devil Wears Prada" -- if you have not seen it yet, it was
great and definitely a must see". Do you know just that little
comment was a referral and by the way if your friend goes to see the
movie, you do not get any monetary referral fee!
Direct Sellers (aka Consultants, Independent Business Owners) use the
products or services they sell to family, friends and potential
customers and also recommend they join the business. I cannot think
of a better testament than to use the products or services you are
selling. I use the products or services I promote. In fact, it is
really a no-brainer -- using Lavender Love as an example. My sister
loves lavender. She has been very supportive of my various Internet
endeavors and started purchasing lavender products from my site.
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind taking her money, and even told
her that, but I told my sister, Linda, since you like the products,
why not be your best customer? By becoming a Lavender Love
consultant you get a discount on the products you purchase for your
personal use and you can also generate income selling the products to
potential customers (30% commission). Well, it didn't take Linda
very long to agree and hence she now sells Lavender Love as well.
She is happy to be a user of the products and with confidence she
sells the products because she knows first hand the excellent quality.
According to Robert Kiyosaki, "Direct selling gives people the
opportunity, with very low risk and very low financial commitment, to
build their own income-generating asset and acquire great wealth."
There are many direct selling opportunities available today. Direct
selling is a business! According to John Fleming, publisher and
editor of "Direct Selling News" article "Business is Booming,"
published in magazine "Your Business At Home", August 2006 issue:
"*The direct selling business model has been around for more than 100
years.
*It generates almost $30 billion per year in revenue in the United
States alone and more than $100 billion worldwide
*You have no employees.
*You have no payroll
*You have no overhead
*You have no fixed territories
Direct Selling is a 'business opportunity open to everyone,
regardless of education, economic background or ethnicity.' 'In the
same way a traditional franchise offers a turnkey opportunity --
complete with manuals, instructions, and training -- direct selling
companies do the same. It's a "ready made" business, complete with
products, services, policies and procedures and training -- all at a
fraction of the investment for standard franchise or traditional
start-up business."
Direct Selling without a doubt has "mass appeal and unlimited
possibilities" and you can be a direct seller for multiple companies.
The first step for transition from a W-2 to a 1099 with Direct
Selling/Network Marketing is to identify which company you would be
proud to be affiliated and represent. For those who want to embrace
this industry below are a few Direct Selling/Network Marketing
companies I am engaged in. I use ALL products or services and the
start-up costs are nominal:
AmeriPlan USA - Awesome Discount Health Benefits!
http://www.myhomebusinesspays.com/ibvaughan (opportunity)
http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/ibvaughan (membership)
Lavender Love - Lavender Aromatherapy Products for Body and Home
http://www.lavender-love.com/affiliates/id/1056
Vitamin Power - Your Vitamin Source
http://www.vitpower.com/yourvitaminsource
Global Domains International (GDI) - Website and Email
http://Website.ws/idettev
NBBTA - Powerful Networking Association
http://nbbta.org/?322
The beauty of direct selling/network marketing is this is something
that you can do at your own pace, you set your own hours and quite
frankly it is an excellent way to augment your current income. You
do not have to quit your current job, but if you're making the big
bucks in direct selling and decide to quit, that's an option. It's
nice to have options!
Quoting my upline, Janie Jones from AmeriPlan: "Be the one that
says, I am so glad I built a Network Marketing business, "instead of
the one who says in the future, "I wish I had."
"The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking places.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed about the things
you did not do than by the things you accomplished, so throw off the
bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade wind in
your sails..." Mark Twain.
So take the next step -- check out one of the opportunities above or
revisit those you have in the past with an open mind. Direct
Selling/Network Marketing is here to stay and why not reap the
benefits as so many others have. A lifestyle change, enough income
to help others through philanthropy (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Oprah
Winfrey are big on philanthropy). Remember when you give from the
heart the rewards come back to you.
Yours for financial freedom in 2007 and beyond,
Idette Vaughan

Since Amazon.com acquired Mobipocket in April 2005, the online bookseller has made some dramatic changes to its ebook strategy. Publishers and authors used to be required to set up an account with Lightning Source to list ebooks with Amazon, but now ebooks are managed by Mobipocket.
To complicate matters further, the ebook version of a title is no longer listed with its print version. In fact, Amazon no longer indexes ebooks on its site at all. When you browse Amazon’s book categories and click on “ebooks,” you are directed to a link that takes you out of Amazon.com and onto Mobipocket.com. The reality is that ebooks are no longer actually sold on Amazon.com at all, but directly through its subsidiary.
There is a debate brewing on blogs across cyberspace about this controversial strategy since many consumers prefer the old method of purchasing ebooks directly from Amazon. But unless Amazon decides to change its strategy again, publishers and authors must follow the new policy to list their ebooks for sale.
Amazon would like to manage the process of approving ebook publishers and asks publishers to send an email to digitalrights@... with the following information:
*What publishing company do you represent? (If you are the author, please enter “author” and the name of the publishing company you work with)
*Your contact information:
Name: Professional title: Business address: Email address: Phone number:
*Please list the ISBNs of the books you are considering making available as eBooks:
*For these titles listed, do you own the digital rights (rights to sell books in a digital format)?
Several days after receipt of this information, Amazon will send you an email with further instructions for registering a publisher account with Mobipocket. But you can jump ahead in the process by following these steps:
1. Register your publisher account: http://www.mobipocket.com/eBookBase/en/Homepage/apply.asp?Type=Publisher
2. Review and sign the publisher agreement: http://www.mobipocket.com/eBookBase/en/Homepage/pub_agreement.asp
3. Fax the agreement back to Mobipocket in France at 33 148 25 90 07. According to the digital rights staff at Amazon, this is the only method that is available for returning signed agreements (they won’t accept agreements via email). Following receipt of your signed agreement, Mobipocket will send you an email with an account login and password.
4. While you wait for your login information, you can convert you ebooks to Mobipocket format. Download the free conversion software at: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsCreator.asp?edition=Publisher.
The program can convert MS Word, text or PDF documents. Be sure to examine your newly created ebook with Mobipocket’s preview tool since the formatting does not always convert correctly. You may need to make some adjustments to text spacing or font sizes.
5. As soon as you receive your login information for your publisher account, you can manage your publisher account at http://www.mobipocket.com/ebookbase/en/homepage/Logon.asp
This is where you will upload your ebook and set your desired retail price. Keep in mind that Mobipocket retains 50% of the retail price as their royalty payment. You will also give up another 10% of the price if you allow affiliate sales.
6. Once you have verified that the ebook looks good and your price is set, you must choose to activate the file. This process makes the ebook available to buyers at Mobipocket.com and through their network of partners. Conversely, if you want to remove your ebook from Mobipocket’s catalog, you can deselect the “activate” option.
Though many of us would like the ability to submit ebooks in PDF format, as well as see ebook titles listed with their print counterparts on Amazon, for now we can only hope that Amazon modifies its process in the near future. In the meantime, the Mobipocket publisher account costs nothing to implement and the listing process, though tedious, is relatively easy to complete. Perhaps with Mobipocket’s network of partners, the extra effort will be worthwhile when it comes time to receive royalty payments for our ebook sales.

Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families By Leslie Morgan Steiner $5.99
With motherhood comes one of the toughest decisions of a woman’s life: Stay at home or pursue a career? The dilemma not only divides mothers into hostile, defensive camps but pits individual mothers against themselves. Leslie Morgan Steiner has been there. As an executive at The Washington Post, a writer, and mother of three, she has lived and breathed every side of the “mommy wars.” Rather than just watch the battles rage, Steiner decided to do something about it. She commissioned twenty-six outspoken mothers to write about their lives, their families, and the choices that have worked for them. The result is a frank, surprising, and utterly refreshing look at American motherhood.
Ranging in age from twenty-five to seventy-two and scattered across the country from New Hampshire to California, these mothers reflect the full spectrum of lifestyle choices. Women who have been home with the kids from day one, moms who shuttle from full-time office jobs to part-time at-home work, hard-driving executives who put in seventy-hour-plus weeks: they all get a turn. The one thing these women have in common, aside from having kids, is that they’re all terrific writers.
Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley vividly recounts how her generation stormed the American workplace–only to take refuge at home when the workplace drove them out. Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minsky describes what it felt like to hear her kids scream “I hope you never come back!” when she flew to L.A. to launch the show that made her career. Susan Cheever, novelist, biographer, and New York Newsday columnist, reports on the furious battles between the stroller pushers and the briefcase bearers on the streets of Manhattan. Lois R. Shea traded the journalistic fast track for a house in the country where she could raise her daughter in peace. Ann Misiaszek Sarnoff, chief operating officer of the Women’s National Basketball Association, argues fiercely that you can combine ambition and motherhood–and have a blast in the process.
Candid, engaging, by turns unflinchingly honest and painfully funny, the essays collected here offer an astonishingly intimate portrait of the state of motherhood today. Mommy Wars is a book by and for and about the real experts on motherhood and hard work: the women at home, in the office, on the job every day of their lives. Read More Details
Milk, cookies and spreadsheets: Sisters are successfully running home businesses while raising their kids
One woman was a chemist, another a nutritionist, the other a recruiter. Each left the security of a full-time job to become her own boss and, more important, to spend additional time with her children. According to 1996 Census Bureau data, sisters owned more than 400,000 businesses--many of which are home-based. But juggling a home business and a family takes more than desire. Three sisters tell us how they keep it all in balance. ...
* Avonia's advice for juggling business and family: "Hire help. I hired a full-time employee to run the day care so I could spend more time with my children. Also, don't let others intrude on your time. When I first started, friends thought they could just `drop by,' but I had to tell them to visit after business hours." ...
