Dear list members,

I have been reading this list for about a year and have asked a few simple
quesitons over that time.

I am co founder of a non profit dedicated to revitalizing a historic black
neighborhood in Montgomery Al. In fact, it contains Martin Luther King's
parish house, Nat King Cole's birthplace, Clarence Carter's birthplace and
was the romping grounds of one Hank Williams, Sr. He jammed with the black
musicians in Centennial Hill.

That said, we have received some $200,000 in Community Development Block
Grant funds from HUD over the past two years with which to refurbish an old
house, once owned by Joe Morris, an innovator in R&B music. It will be used
as a community house. We are also refurbishing some old shot gun houses for
resale to low to moderate income families. We have a 50% vacancy rate in
the community. Absentee landlords. You know the deal.

We have a 5,000 square foot community garden that is quite beautiful and
productive and a small, functional and ornamental herb garden.

Here's my question. I have been making picture frames out of antique wood
that cannot be reused in the renovation of these homes and there is plenty
of it. My intention is to see if these are marketable and to see what other
items might be made from this wood. I have been offered a free table at a
local outdoor art and crafts event to test the waters and hope to try a
larger one a little later in the spring. If all goes well, I hope to see if
we can find some backers to purchase the "right" equipment, rent some space
for a shop and see if we can employ some residents from Centennial Hill.

Help! I am great idea man but not so organized. Are there some templates
of business plans that I might use to construct one for this project. I
think I have three months before I will have some feel for the marketability
of these items.

We are talking small time operation to start but this community needs
whatever we can dream up for it.

Thanks for a year's worth of information and I look forward to another one.

Hi Ed,

Sounds like you've got an interesting opportunity there; one that you can
start small and grow incrementally as you're able.

For training and support, you may want to check out the FastTrac NewVenture
training program at www.fasttrac.org/program_newventure.cfm . It's offered
at:
Birmingham Business Resource Center
110 N. 12th St.
Birmingham, Alabama 35203
205-250-6380, bbrc@...

If you're looking for fill-in-the-blank software, I can recommend Business
Plan Pro for $99.95. Check it out at www.paloalto.com/ps/bp/

The business planning book I use as a reference is "The Successful Business
Plan," by Rhonda Abrams. It's probably more than what you need, but I could
help you to use it selectively. It's available at www.amazon.com for
$19.56.

Check out the "business planning" section of our firm's "Free Management
Library" at www.managementhelp.org/plan_dec/bus_plan/bus_plan.htm

Also, I'll take a look at the materials I've got to see what might be
appropriate. Feel free to contact me directly if you've got any questions.

Good Luck,
    Andy

Dear Ed:

Although there are many templates for business plans, in most instances,
you really need to look at a business plan as a "custom plan," specific to
your product, business expectations and goals. But, before going into any
business plan documentation, I would strongly suggest that you have a quick
feasibility done first, primarily focusing on the financial components to
see if the product is economically viable and what it would take in dollars
to achieve goals. A good accountant or CPA experienced in small business
should be able to perform such a quick, preliminary analysis to give you a
probability of success.

Two good resources for you to investigate, that will provide business plan
templates and other financial information are www.bplans.com and
www.planningpeople.com, Both are by Palo Alto Software, the company that
provides the business plan software to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

If you need help to have a Quick Business Evaluation done of your proposed
venture, let me know I will gladly help you out by doing one for you.

Best wishes,

Almost 4 years ago my daughter was diagnosed with an auditory
processing disorder. At that time I was told there was not much I
could do to help her and I just needed to help her manage and learn
to cope with her disorder. After 1 1/2 years went by I found out
this was wrong and that there was help available. The problem was
that since this disorder is NOT considered a medical disorder and
it's not classified as a learning disorder, parents are bounced back
and forth trying to find information. There is still much confusion
and research that needs to be done in order to effectively help a
person with an APD.

Two years ago this week I started an online chat/support group
for families and much to my surprise it took off like wildfire. Soon
I was hearing from families all over the country and some from
outside the United States. To make a long story short, in August of
2000 I cofounded a nonfprofit organization along with two
audiologists. Our mission is to assist families of individuals
affected by APD, through education, support and public awareness. We
want to be a national clearinghouse for information related to this
disorder. Our group is slowly being recognized by some of the top
professionals in the field and was listed as a resource in two new
books that are being released this month. So slowly we are getting
there. We have obtained our 501(c)3 status.

My question is this: The majority of the work we have done I
have organized from my home. It was just recently that I finally
moved from my living room to a small office space. I still work a
full time job besides running the nonprofit organization. Most days
I'm exhausted but I know we are making a difference in the lives of
some children, including my own daughter! I've never asked for one
dime compensation since the income for the group is minimal from some
memberships and from a conference we held this last year. This year
we are planning 5 conferences aroung the United States which will
definitely help our income. I am wanting to go full time with the
nonprofit only and quit my regular full time job, but I have to have
an income. I am afraid we'll be turned down for grants since I am
President of the nonprofit and as a parent and do not have education
in this area, only life experience and the extensive research I've
done. How do I go about applying for grants that may help cover
overhead expenses? To increase our chances at grants do I step back
as President and let one of the audiologists take the lead even
though I am the one in the office doing the work? I'm just not sure
how to make this all work and I am overwhelmed!

Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed!! You can email me
privately or on the list. Thanks for your patience with the long
email!!......................Debbie

Dear Debbie,

You may want to check out the following free resources to help with your
decisions:

www.managementhelp.org/fndrsng/np_raise/np_raise.htm

While I applaud your efforts, I should remind you that the purpose of this
discussion group is to share ideas about how to create mission-related
earned income. With your five conferences, you certainly seem to be in that
"game." Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help with your
earned income.

Hi everyone,

I work for a consulting firm in Washington, DC called Community
Wealth Ventures. We work with nonprofits to create revenue-
generating business ventures and corporate partnerships. To help
share best practices among practitioners in the field, we recently
developed a survey and would to invite you to participate.

Please visit www.web-surveys.net/studies/cwv_cas to receive your
access code and review the survey. All those who participate will
receive a free copy of the report, which will include aggregate
survey data (we will not report individual organization statistics),
case studies, essays from thought leaders in the field, and a
directory of social enterprises. We are also going to make the
directory searchable over the Internet so you can look for like-
minded organizations.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly:

Dear Nonprofit Entrepreneur eGroup,

We are students conducting a consulting project for a nonprofit organization.
We are currently in the beginning phase of our project and are looking for
good sources of research for industry analysis.

In this case we are looking for industry research regarding social
entrepreneurship (if this is considered an industry) as well as possible
revenue generators for such nonprofit organizations.

If anyone knows a good source (i.e. trade magazines, websites, an e-magazine,
or any other sources) we would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks and Regards,

What are your client's products or services? What customers do they propose

Dear Andy,

Our client is an organization whose goal is to assist small and medium size
organizations in increasing their innovative capacities. The way they propose
to do so is what we have to come up with, some form of innovation consulting
company that can work as both a nonprofit as well as stay true to the mission.

Their mission reads:

The mission of the American Innovation Institute is to increase the quality of
life and global competitiveness of individuals, small and mid-sized
businesses, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and local
municipalities through supporting the efforts of leading innovators.

We serve as a national center for the initiation, promotion and dissemination
of innovation-related information, and provide a structured forum for
cooperation among academic institutions, government and industry. Because
application is critical, we will help introduce the results of innovative
research into everyday practice.

To bring this about, the Institute will train “innovation
professionals”—through workshops, publications and courses, and through degree
programs in schools of business. These new professionals will be the experts
on innovation in all settings.

It is with this last paragraph that we hope to build some form of revenue
model, one that could potentially help save this organization.

Once again any suggestions you have will be great,
Thanks again for your help,

Dinesh Sakhrani

Dinesh,

To answer your earlier question, I don't think that social entrepreneurship
is an industry; rather it's a field of theory and practice that can be
applied in a variety of industries. I would say that your client appears to
be in the "innovation" industry. A quick search on www.google.com revealed
a diverse range of different innovation organizations. I'd do your industry
analysis on that basis.

To learn more about social entrepreneurship, I've put together a couple of
free resources that might be helpful:
www.np-biz-dev.com/se_intro.pdf
www.np-biz-dev.com/toolbox.pdf

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
   Andy

One of the first rules of a marketing plan is to examine the competition, and, for a mission this broad, that could be a dramatic discovery that there are plenty of others whose financial viability, as it were, overlaps the viability of another one. Ultimately, when this discovery gets too oppressive people do what they've always done: they get a job with somebody whose plan is already successful enough to pay them.

Sincerely,
  Andy

Hello Katie,

Would it be possible to receive the survey results without filling it out?
I'm a consultant who works with nonprofits in the Greater Boston area on
various social enterprise activities. I'll be sure to refer clients to the
survey, but would be interested to see the composite data when it's all
complete.

Thanks so much,

If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly:
ksmcnerney@....

Thanks! We look forward to reading about your amazing work! -Katie
McNerney

I'm working with a Canadian Volunteer Centre located in Nanaimo on Vancouver
Island in British Columbia (great spot to holiday!!!)

I too would appreciate both a copy of the survey results. Canada is lagging
behind in entrepreneurial initiatives within the NFP sector, but our
Volunteer Centre is struggling with our peer groups who are not ready to
leap into that new world of revenue generating.

Thanks,
Geri

The question no arises, since we will be approaching various places for information etc. do I call my this effort a NPO?

This is Deepali here. And I am writing this mail in the hope to seek some guidance from you. To give a little background about myself. I have done MBA and have 5 years of work experience commercial Banking Area. Past one year I made an important decision in my life to take a sabbatical and do community work. Also as we have formed a small team of like minded people and decided to be a sort of Social  Entrepreneurs. We are  thinking of having a web based portal to help community by providing sufficient information. Currently under the strategic plan we have no monetary transactions involve and it is completely information based. The question no arises, since we will be approaching various places for information etc. do I call my this effort a NPO?  Do I need to incorporate it ?Do I need EIN i.e. Employer's Identification no ? Are there any legalities involve? Can I  call this an 'organization' since we will need volunteers to help me in this mission later?  We are not interested in investing much money in this phase expect of course on web site development. Please guide me as it will be a great help. Deepali  ----- Original Message -----

Dear group members,

I have included a small note on the not for profit being run by us
out of India. Would be glad if the group could advise on the likely
sources of funds for such an initiative.

Indian Society of Agribusiness Professionals aims at enhancing rural
farm incomes in India through establishing Agri-knowledge network &
knowledge delivery mechanism to enable access to appropriate
agricultural technologies and market intelligence for the masses
living in the hinterlands of India.

Whereas, there are several problem areas in the Indian agricultural
economy, that need to be tackled simultaneously, we believe that
given our strengths, expertise and management bandwidth we can make a
difference in the information dissemination and micro-level problem
solving.

The Objectives

1. Create a forum of experts who will be able to provide technical
and managerial advisory services

2. Identify motivated agricultural graduates and provide training and
project services to enable creation and sustainable working of
agribusiness clinics that are being sponsored by GOI

3. Enroll a large number of professionals working actively in the
sector and enable them with information and consulting services to
add value to their services

4. Source information on technology and markets and provide it to the
farmers through agribusiness clinics

5. Develop information dissemination channels to reach the target
groups

Value proposition

There is no organization, which is geared towards consolidating
knowledge in the agricultural sector in India, which enables inter
connectivity and sharing that would unleash nation wide synergies. On
the other hand, the farming community is deprived of the expertise
and excellence that exist in pockets across the country.

There is thus, a need of such an organization that will use the
strengths of the current day Information and Communication
Technologies to satisfy the needs of the farming community by
providing information and knowledge.

The proposed project of ISAP aims at developing such an organization.
The Indian Agricultural sector contributes 25% to the Indian economy
and 65% to the employment in the country and therefore an increase in
farm incomes, however modest, will lead to betterment in the lives of
650 million people.

Political and economic climate in India

The Government of India and several State Governments are planning
large investments by way of subsidies to entrepreneurs to set up agri-
business clinics. The Central Government has allocated Rs. 1.85
billion (USD 38 million) ) in the 5-year plan for this purpose. The
state governments are expected to put in matching amount of funds. In
states like Maharashtra, the government is already providing a
subsidy of Rs. 1,00,000/- per agri-clinic. However, if an effective
backend is not available to these clinics, they will not be in a
position to deliver the required services to the target community.

The Project aims at establishing the basic mechanism that would
facilitate establishing Agri-clinics (being funded by the government)
by motivated agricultural graduates on self-sustainable basis. It
will establish the knowledge network, will identify the entrepreneurs
interested in starting Agri-Clinics, will train them and will provide
the information products and services to them on an ongoing basis.
Thus the concept of Agribusiness clinics becomes scalable and could
expand till it reaches every major village in the country.

Once the basic knowledge network and delivery mechanism are in place,
the operating cost of the project will be recovered by charging
modest fees for use of the information and expert services by the
farming community via the agribusiness clinics.

Action areas of ISAP

The overall plan is as follows:

1. Create a city/ center wise network of functional experts.
2. Enroll at least 100,000 Agribusiness professionals as associates
within 5 years……unemployed graduates, progressive farmers,
manufacturers, service providers, buyers of agricultural products and
services
3. A need assessment survey in different parts of the country for
various crops to identify needs -- Create a database for agricultural
information needs and the providers of the information -- Use along
with a well-designed delivery mechanism to ensure that the
information seekers all over the country (even in the remote places)
are not deprived of the expertise available in the country.
4. Help set up and manage agribusiness clinics by providing training,
course content, know-how and managerial inputs - including helping
entrepreneurs to arrange finance and launch services. Clinics will be
run by private individuals/NGOs/Co-operatives.
5. Provide consulting and educational services to the participants.
The participants will be able to use the forum to submit their
Request for Proposals (RFPs) and the panel of experts will then
respond with specific proposals. This Project will act as the
facilitator
6. Enter into strategic alliances with information service providers
like Reuters, PTI, UNI, and agriwatch.com to source market
information. Provide this market information in customized form to
the Agri-clinics
Management

ISAP is backed by experienced professionals in field of agribusiness
and management. The promoter organization of this project i.e. Indian
Society for Agribusiness Professionals (ISAP) is registered as a Not-
for-Profit Company under the Company's Act 1956. The functioning of
the organization will be governed by the provisions made under the
Articles of Association and under the Company's Act 1956. Indian
Society of Agribusiness Professionals (ISAP) is a non-profit, non-
political non-government; public interest organization dedicated to
participants in the agriculture sector.

The promoters of the organization are professionals with agricultural
background and significant managerial experience.

What has already been executed

web-site and has put together a network of about 1000 experts from
all over the world. The individuals required to drive the project
have been identified. There are 15 chapter volunteers who have
assumed the responsibility of development of ISAP activities in their
respective regions.
