Description

This is a 'revival' of a Yahoo Group of the same name that I hosted from July 2004-July 2006 which was placed on hiatus. It focuses on the NS Pittsburgh Line between Altoona and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, along with Secondary lines that radiate from it such as the South Fork Secondary,RJ Corman's Cresson Secondary, Irvona Secondary, as well as Nittany and Bald Eagle trackage radiating out of Tyrone. Though the Group focuses on the Altoona-Johnstown area, discussion and photos, etc can cover the Railroad between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. Discussion can also cover the area during the Pennsy, Penn-Central, and Conrail eras as well as contemporary NS activity. Pictures, files, links related to the area are welcome, as well as postings of interesting happenings such as Railfests, model train shows, excursions, etc. This Group is intended to complement other Altoona area and West Slope oriented Groups. No flaming or off topic postings please! To avoid spam, new member postings are initially set on moderated status.Blatantly off-topic or offensive postings will result in moderation or removal from Group...Enjoy! (Group homepage photo: The Stone arch bridge at Johnstown Pa was built by the PRR in the late 19th century to replace an earlier structure. The sturdiness of the bridge was later tested in May of 1889 when it held back a wall of debris from the 1889 Johnstown Flood, which caused much suffering when fire broke out in the large mass of backed up debris. The bridge was later widened and reinforced with concrete when the PRR expanded the mainline from 2 to 4 tracks.
The Stone arch bridge still serves an important purpose well over a century after it was built, as it is a vital part of the NS Pittsburgh East-West Mainline. A Westbound NS empty hopper train rolls across the historic structure on a nice Autumn day. Group homepage pic shot on November 1st of 2009 by David J. Williams-Group owner.)
