Personally I would not recommend double-sided tape on account of a tendency for the adhesive to dry out over time. Ordinary PVA is fine, both to stick the foam...

Not necessary, Kevin, and unless you get perfectly straight timber (is there any such thing?) you do not get even pressure. The foam is easily resilient enough...
