THE GREEN RENTER: DOING RIGHT BY THE EARTH IN THE WORLD’S GREATEST CITY.
Presented by Solar One

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the increasing popularity of these events and the
limited size of our space (35 people if no one exhales), we are asking
that you RSVP if you want to attend. We will do our best not to turn
anyone away, but we also don't want overcrowding to detract from the
enjoyment of the event.  RSVPs can be made by calling (212) 505-6050 or
by e-mailing neidl@....  Please specify which topic(s) you are
interested in.

We've already got plenty more lined up for the coming months as well,
so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.

Sustainability on the Neighborhood Scale: Inside the Greening-a-Block
Program
While City and State administrations have each articulated and acted
upon impressive commitments to energy conservation and efficiency on a
large scale, the actual task of mitigating waste, and its many health
related, economic and environmental consequences, is open to
experimentation.  Among the most exciting local initiatives, currently
being explored for a section of the Lower East Side, is the
Greening-A-Block project.

Jointly supported by local politicians, Community Board 3, NYSERDA and
the Neighborhood Energy Network (NEN), Greening-A-Block aims to create
an urban showcase of energy efficiency, pollution reduction, job
development and community sustainability on a single-block scale.  The
project seeks to establish a working template that may ultimately be
embraced by other City communities and beyond.

Join efficiency / renewable energy expert and Greening-A-Block
co-originator Jeff Perlman for an extensive discussion of the project’s
history, progress, method and underlying concepts and goals.

Worm Composting 101 with Kate Zidar of the Lower East Side Ecology
Center

(***This program is already over half-full.  Please RSVP ASAP - we
always wanted to say that - if interested.)

Vermiculture is a method of household composting that uses earthworms
to breakdown kitchen and garden wastes. Important advantages of
vermiculture include both quick decomposition time and considerable
nutrient production for your garden.

Join composting-guru Kate Zidar of the Lower Eastside Ecology Center
for a hands-on demonstration of how a simple but effective vermiculture
kit can be put to work in your home or apartment. We will first learn
about the compostable part of the waste stream, as well as different
types of composting, before wiggling down to the smaller scale matter
of household worm composting.

All who attend will receive vouchers for Worm Condo kits ($45 value)
that can be subsequently picked up at Union Square on any market day
for only $10.

(This program is offered through the Manhattan Compost Project and was
made possible through funding by the Department of Sanitation. For more
information about composting in Manhattan please call the RotLine at
212.477.3155.)

Buying Energy Star 101 with Lisa Frasene of Aspen Systems Corporation

Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and
individuals protect the environment through superior energy
efficiency.  Results are already adding up. In 2004 alone, Americans,
with the help of Energy Star, saved enough energy to power 24 million
homes and avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 20
million cars - all while saving $10 billion.

Products in more than 40 categories are eligible for the Energy Star.
They use less energy, save money, and help protect the environment.
Energy efficient choices can save families about a third on their
energy bill with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions, without
sacrificing features, style or comfort. Energy Star helps you make the
energy efficient choice.

Aspen Systems Corporation is nationally recognized for innovative
energy-efficiency and market transformation programs.  At this event,
Ms. Frasene will utilize that expertise to help you green your
purchasing dollars by understanding and utilizing the Energy Star
program.

All sessions held at Solar One in Stuyvesant Cove Park
East 23rd and the East River (6 Train to 23rd St, or L Train to 1st
Ave.)
