The Big Green Author with Ben Jervey, author of The Big Green Apple
Solar One is honored to have friend and local writer Ben Jervey join
the Green Renter for a discussion of his recently published work, The
Big Green Apple (Globe Pequote Press, 2006, $14.95). For the growing
number of us who endeavor each day to creatively reconcile our love for
New York with our desire to reduce our impact on the planet, Ben has
done us all a true solid. Loaded with information on everything from
environmental events and organizations, to joining a CSA and buying
green electricity and household products, the book reads something like
a cross between a Lonely Planet guide to NYC and a top-notch
environmental studies textbook.
Ben will share some of the inspirations, tribulations, and amusing
encounters that he experienced in the process of writing, as well as
discuss his current and future projects. Guests can purchase signed
copies of The Big Green Apple from the author at a special Solar One
bargain price of $12.

Something New Under the Sun: Creation Care and the Evangelical
Environmental Movement with Paul de Vries, Ph.D. of the New York
Divinity School
Environmental leaders have increasingly come to acknowledge that the
solutions to our most pressing problems will only be reached when a
truly diverse and culturally inclusive movement coalesces around common
goals. To date, much progress has been stymied by the ability of
powerful detractors to effectively brand environmentalism just another
elite, latte-sipping special interest that exits “outside of the
American mainstream.”
It is with this impasse borne in mind that the recent evolution (so to
speak) of the evangelical Creation Care movement becomes such a
compelling development. Creation Care is a growing network of
evangelical activists exerting their resources and influence in
conservative America to bring about action on issues ranging from
climate change, to mercury emissions control and biodiversity
protection. The network’s innovative initiatives, such as WWJDrive and
the Evangelical Declaration for the Care of Creation, are informed by a
careful reading of the Bible that identifies the sacredness of Nature
(or ‘Creation’) and humanity’s obligations as steward. The progress of
environmental action based on Christian inspiration could go a long way
towards making the green agenda less susceptible to culture war
evocations.
The Green Renter is honored to host New York Divinity School president
and evangelical scholar Paul de Vries, Ph.D. for an inside look at the
Biblical underpinnings, recent successes and activist aims of the
Creation Care movement. For decades he has been a committed
environmentalist. Dr. de Vries is on the governing Board of the
National Association of Evangelicals, the largest evangelical
organization, representing more than 30 million American evangelicals.
The New York Divinity School is the “Bible-based, Christ-centered,
Spirit-led” seminary for the City, and based in Times Square.

Calculating Your Personal Carbon Output with Andy Mele, the Founder of
Clearwater
With the combined escalation of deforestation, the combustion of fossil
fuels and other human factors, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in
the atmosphere has risen dramatically over recent decades. Unabated,
this trend will continue to cause rising average temperatures, which,
in turn, could result in potentially devastating shifts in prevailing
climate conditions.
While attempts to mitigate such an outcome require immediate resolve on
the part of our political and corporate leadership, the importance of
individual carbon accountability should not be dismissed. The choices
that we make as individuals not only directly affect how much CO2
ultimately finds its way into the atmosphere; if broadly adopted, they
also signal clear consumer and voter preferences to powerful decision
makers.
Andy Mele, founder of the environmental education and advocacy group
Clearwater, first engaged the matter of personal carbon output as a
graduate student. Since that time he has developed an effective model
for estimating personal carbon output. Green Renter guests will gain
insight into the dimensions of their own carbon footprint by
calculating the group’s combined output. Practical tips for curbing
output will also be offered.
