Maureen replied (and i hope you don't mind me posting your reply):
Hi David:
I signed up with ConEd, and am feeling the burn right now, despite low
usage.
I did talk to some greentag suppliers, and you can buy greentags for
offsetting your power usage at a lower price than coned.
I looked at newwindenergy and sterling.
(You can buy renewables produced in the central u.s. at a lower price
than NE produced as well.)

I'm re-replying (in case the info is useful for others):
Newwindenergy takes you to the Con Ed Solutions program.
I just checked out both greentags and renewable choice. Renewable has
a program where you can choose either an individual ($5)or family
($15) per month contribution (and get a Whole Foods gift certificate).
Greentags has a site where you calculate the amount of greenhouse
gasses you produce (utilites, driving, flying) and then offers you
different percentages of offsets. My 100% offset would cost $320/yr
which, coincidentally, is around what the less expensive hydro/wind
Con Ed Solutions plan would add to my utility bill. But you can elect
to offset less. down to 13% (in my case) at $40/yr.
