USEFUL INFORMATION FOR DOING RIGHT BY THE EARTH IN THE WORLD’S GREATEST

TUESDAY NOV. 15, 7PM

The Environmental Benefits of Buying Local

The wisdom of buying locally produced goods and services has long been
the subject of debate in economic discourse. However, local purchasing
also represents an important prospect for environmentally sustainable
development.

By significantly reducing the massive waste and emissions burdens that
are imposed by global transportation networks, and by ensuring that
production adheres to local environmental law sand values, local
purchasing by individuals, businesses and publicentities can result in
significant positive environmental and economic impacts.

Join Jen Roth, Research Director for the New York Industrial Retention
Network, for an informative survey of the green merits and enduring
challenges that surround development models based on local production.
Particular attention will be given the NYC context.

Greening The Grid: Buying Clean Electricity for your NYC apartment

Experts agree that the substitution of fossil fuels by clean, renewable
electricity sources like wind, solar and low impact hydro will be key
to securing a healthier, safer and more prosperous energy future for
residents of our city, state and world.

However, few New Yorker’s are aware that they can help spur this
important effort by signing up to receive their electricity from green
sources, right now! Such a move, being made by a growing number of
households, not only displaces dirty fossil fuels today, but also
provides critical investment towards the expansion of these still
fledgling sectors of the energy economy.

Mike Forese of New Wind Energy (http://www.newwindenergy.com) will lead
an informative workshop at Solar One that will answer all your green
power questions. Historical background and future trends, as well as
financial, environmental and procedural details will be discussed at
length. Aspiring green renters who bring a RECENT UTILITY BILL can even
sign up for green electricity right on the spot.

THE GREEN RENTER SERIES AT SOLAR ONE presents:
GETTING INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSAs) IN NYC.

CSA helps to support regional family farms that are struggling to stay
in business, while providing city people, particularly those in
low-income neighborhoods, with access to high quality, locally grown,
affordable produce. Embracing CSAs supports local economic growth, and
brings about a number of environmental benefits. Paula Lukats of Just
Food will explain the basics of CSA programs, how they function, and
who they benefit; and provide useful information for those interested
in getting involved in existing CSAs in New York, or even starting one
in their own community.

Hi Maureen:

The Biodegradable Products Institute lists all the compostable
plastics, including sources of resin.
http://bpiworld.org/BPI-Public/Approved/3.html
I did a packaging project last year, and BPI was very helpful. The
resin producers were helpful in discussing what applications were
suitable for their products as well.

Also, about a year ago, AOL sent out CDs in what looked like
wheatboard covered in paper. I have also seen thin steel media tins
that can be thrown in the regular recycling.

Oil and gas prices will continue to rise, compelling green solutions
Get the full story at this Wed., October 5 conference in NYC

Why are oil and gas prices rising?  We hear about refinery shortages,
growing demand, and natural disasters, but another factor has now
entered mainstream discussion: geological limits on the supplies of
these fuels.  As we approach them, fuel costs will continue to rise,
making the solutions long proposed by environmentalists into economic
necessities, instead of merely desirable reforms.  Energy efficiency
and conservation, new transportation policies, and the widespread
implementation of renewable sources of power, will all become
critically important.  At the Petrocollapse Conference on Wednesday,
October 5, nationally known experts will explain why crude oil will
inevitably rise to over $100 per barrel, what effect this will have on
our national and local economy, and how government, business and civic
groups must begin working together now to prepare for a fuel-depleted
future.

(A report on responses specific to New York City will be presented at
the conference.  Please contact Dan Miner, Long Island City Business
Development Corporation, for an executive summary at 718.786.5300 x 27
or danminer@....)

Oil experts and scientists will speak at a unique conference on a
little-known but crucially important cause of the current rise in oil
prices – the coming peak in global oil production referred to simply as
peak oil.  Presenters will discuss its local and global consequences.

Speakers include James Howard Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency;
Dr. John Darnell, Science and Energy Advisor to Congressman Roscoe
Bartlett; Jan Lundberg of Culturechange.org, former publisher of the
Lundberg Survey; Mike Ruppert, author: Crossing the Rubicon,

Corporation. The moderator is Jenna Orkin, co-founder of the World
Trade Center Environmental Organization.

The event is sponsored by Culturechange.org and by Continuing
Education & Public Programs, The Graduate Center, City University of
New York (CUNY).

"As oil prices rise and crude oil supplies and refined products strain
to keep up with demand, the peaking of global oil extraction is finally
becoming acknowledged in the mainstream news.  As Hurricane Katrina
continues to hamper petroleum production in addition to devastating a
large population and ecosystem, people are asking if this is a
foretaste of the future of a nation that has failed to conserve
energy," stated Jan Lundberg, a principal conference organizer who ran
the oil statistics firm Lundberg Survey.

"The public remains in the dark about the vast array of consequences
of this looming crisis.  Political leadership is almost entirely
lacking.  Dishonest reporting by OPEC countries and major oil companies
have contributed to the illusion that there is sufficient time before
we 'run out of oil' to transition to a 'solution', whether it be
hydrogen, renewables or an attempt to increase nuclear power, or some
combination of the above," Lundberg added.

Approximately one dozen significant oil producing countries are past
their peak in extraction and it is possible that world peak has already
arrived (this cannot be conclusively determined until after the fact).
The sudden effects of shortage are likely to hit the global economy
within the next three years, possibly even as early as this winter.  At
the Petrocollapse Conference the participants will ask:

   - How will the economy be affected by limits on critical resources
such as oil and natural gas?
   - What will be the effects of peak oil (a geological phenomenon) and
petrocollapse (an economic and social phenomenon) on food supply and
other services we depend on?
   - What is the role of the market in determining how severe will be the
effect of shortage stemming from geological depletion?
   - Is there a "Plan B" to ease a transition to sustainable living in a
world without plentiful energy and petroleum's materials?   "It is up
to us to find solutions that involve everyone in a spirit of
solidarity," said Lundberg.

This is fantastic- most definitely we should get o2 involved. Two
things it makes me think of- the barge museum in Red Hook and the
Frying Pan where we had Greendrinks. We'll keep it in mind for meetings
to come. I've subscribed to their mailing list so I'll keep an eye out
for their emails.

Thanks Mo!

Yea! It's working! Well- so far we are still a limited group until I
put out more of a push for people to sign up. In the meantime, you
might also try the international o2 mailing list for this question.
Soon I hope we will have droves of New Yorkers on this list.

Thanks for coming to the meeting tonight, Chuck! See you soon!

Hi All,

I'm doing a bit of research regarding a Swedish initiative that
Electrolux did a few years back. It was a washing machine leasing system
in which you would pay by the load. This was to increase awareness and
provide a motivation to conserve water.

I can't find any information as to the success (or lack there of) of the
program. Is it still running?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck
