Hi,

The OSSC has invited the OSSD to attend a nearby meeting in San Clemente on April 7, 2009.  The meeting will be at Reynard Corp.  Reynard has been in the optics industry since 1984 and has a wonderful facility for thin film coating and patterning.  The meeting includes:

  • Dinner at 7:00 PM
  • Presentation/Tour from 8:00 PM to 9:45 PM
  • Dessert at 9:45 PM

I encourage you to visit the OSSC website (http://www.ossc.org) for more details.

Several people have contacted me in the last couple months asking what has happened to the OSSD?  As you may know this is the first announcement we've had in just over one year.   Prior to that I have personally organized the overwhelming majority of the meetings for the previous couple of years.  For us to continue as a viable Optics Group in San Diego, I need help.

Simply put, I need people to volunteer to organize meetings.  This activity takes a total of about four (4) hours per meeting and involves:

  1. Inviting a speaker,
  2. Finding a location (often the place of business of the speaker),
  3. Arranging for a meal.

I have received some anectdotal feedback over the years:  meetings last too long, too much traffic, we need membership dues, e-mails don't get to me, we need volunteers for the Science Fair.  As a group, we can work on addressing these issues.  As an individual, I need your help to find out:

  • What do you want out of the OSSD?
  • Are you willing to pitch in to help the OSSD and the Optics Industry in San Diego?

If you respond to this e-mail with an offer to help, I will meet with you individually or as a group; at the OSSC meeting or at a location in San Diego.  Please share your thoughts.

Best regards,

Brian Catanzaro

Hi,

Just a brief reminder for the meeting.  Please RSVP to either:  mailto://opticalsocietyofsandiego@... or mailto://zeke.kruglick@... .  I hope to see you there.

Brian

P.S.  A robot "Botball" Tournament is coming to USD on Mar 15.  Volunteers are being solicited.  See http://www.sdsa.org

Hi,

Thanks to Prof. Trevidi for last months talk.  It was interesting to see all the advancements in image processing and image recognition.

The San Diego Science Fair is coming up soon.  Please contact Kelly Cummings (kellycummings@...).  He is looking for volunteers to judge projects and hand out awards.  This is a great way to encourage science and engineering in our community.  These are the students that will energize the economy in this area.  Please consider giving your support.

Another way to get involved in science education is through the San Diego Science Alliance (www.sdsa.org).  They sponsor talks in San Diego aimed at primary and secondary education students and teachers.  You can volunteer to give a talk or support by encouraging your local science teachers to attend the many free training events they sponsor for teachers.

From time to time, I am approached by recruiters wishing to present their offerings to our membership.  I don't have the time to create a job board for San Diego.  If there is a member interested in this activity, they can contact me and they can be a focal point for optics jobs in San Diego.

I'm sure many of you have heard talks on MEMS technology.  The OSSD has hosted  a few talks on the subject (e.g. Micralyne and UCI's Nanofabrication Facility).  This month we have two speakers - one from a MEMS design company and one from the fabrication services at CalIT2 at UCSD.  My goal for this talk is:

Utlizing Design Expertise and Fabrication Facilities in San Diego to realize products using MEMS Technology.

I hope to see you there!

Holistic Perception and Dynamic Displays for Enhanced Vehicular Safety

Mohan M. Trivedi

Laboratory for Intelligent and Safe Automobiles [cvrr.ucsd.edu/LISA]

University of California at San Diego

Abstract: The primary goal of intelligent driver support systems should to provide effective warnings and alarms to the drivers to enhance safe driving. We will discuss multidisciplinary research activities focused on the design and evaluation of new types of Intelligent Driver Support Systems and their components. Systematic efforts to understand and characterize driver behavior and ethnography surrounding the task of driving are essential in the development of human-centric driver assistance systems. Novel instrumented vehicles are used for conducting experiments, where the rich contextual information about vehicle dynamics, surround and driver state are captured for careful, detailed ethnographic studies, as well as realistic data for developing algorithms to analyze multi sensory signals for active safety. In this presentation, we will provide a systems-oriented framework for developing multimodal sensing, inferencing algorithms and human-vehicle interfaces for safer automobiles. We will consider three main components of the system, driver, vehicle, and vehicle surround. We will discuss various issues and ideas for developing models for these main components as well as activities associated with the complex task of safe driving. The presentation will include discussion of novel sensory systems and algorithms for capturing not only the dynamic surround information of the vehicle but also the state, intent and activity patterns of drivers. We will also introduce a new type of visual display called "dynamic active display". These displays present visual information to the driver where driving view and safety-critical visual icons are presented to the driver in a manner that minimizes deviation of her gaze direction without adding to unnecessary visual clutter. These contributions indicate the basic promise the "human-centric active safety" (HCAS) systems in enhancing the safety and comfort of automobile based travel.

A quick reminder for the meeting on next Thursday, Jan 31.  I have also included a full abstract for the talk below.  If I get a high enough head count for dinner, I'll get  a Rubios buffet meal.  Dinner will be $12/each.

Thank you for the feedback on locations.  I have one respondent that said he was price insensitive and another that was price sensitive!

I have a couple leads on conference rooms at local companies.  Thank you for the suggestions.  I'm looking forward to seeing more suggestions.

Hi,

I hope all of you enjoyed your holidays in December.  We will be having this month's meeting at the Fish and Richardson conference room.  I will send a complete announcement in a few days.  Please mark your calendar!

Attendees seemed to enjoy both lively discussions before the meeting as well as having the meetings finish early.  As a consequence, I'll encourage our speaker to begin while we are enjoying our meal.  We'll try to hold questions until the end of the talk.

I have made a request previously for suggestions for meeting locations.  After our experience at Giovanni's last month, I would like to find another more reliable location for our meetings.  I conducted a search last year and did not arrive at many solutions.  Please help me by suggesting some alternate meeting sites.  Here are a few options with pro's and con's.

  • Restaurant - Most restaurants do not have a private room.  We absolutely need a private room so we can use our projector and hear our speaker without being interrupted by other patrons.  The restaurants I've seen with private rooms charge extra for a special server for our group.  This increases the meal price from our low budget:  $7 - $20 to $25 - 35.  In almost all cases we need a guaranteed minimum number of attendees, otherwise we pay a flat rate (e.g. $400).
  • UCSD - Parking fees are $7/night or $1/hr and the campus is difficult to navigate.  Furthermore, I don't know if rooms are for free.  I assume a UCSD faculty member can help us negotiate a free meeting room.
  • Hotels - We have used hotels before.  They have the same cost constraints as restaurants:  $25 - $40/person with a minimum required.
  • Local Optics Company - I have yet to identify a local optics company with a meeting room that would allow us to us their conference room for our meetings.  This could be a nearly ideal situation for the OSSD:  convenient parking, low cost, allows food, friendly sponsor.  With a couple alternate sites and a point of contact at each we would only need the room 2 - 4 times each year.

Please offer your suggestions.  In particular, I need to know if you are price sensitive.  Our attendance has ranged between 10 - 25 people per meeting.  Candidly it is not predictable based on the RSVP's.   I hesitate to spend OSSD money to fund "empty seats" at a Hotel or Restaurant.  We don't have a source of funds other than fees for dinner.  Without your feedback, I don't think it is fair to charge a membership fee just to pay for meals at a hotel or restaurant.

Please let me know your opinion so I can help the OSSD serve you.

Best regards,

Brian

Hi,

I hope for a rapid recovery for those affected by the fires.  If there are things that we can do as an optics community to help those affected, feel free to make a suggestion.  As I spoke with Donn Silbermann of the OSSC, he and I thought of the following:

  1. If there are optics businesses that cannot operate with their facilities as they are rebuilding, perhaps there are local businesses with extra office space that they could accomodate a temporary arrangement.
  2. I hope that payments to affected businesses can be accelerated and invoices can be delayed.

Our meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, Nov 15.  Same location, same time.  We need twenty (20) people to show or it will cost us extra.  Please make an effort to RSVP by Wednesday, Nov 14.

I am beginning to post files related to the meetings on the website.  These files vary from PDF's of articles, to presentation materials.  All materials are provided by the speakers.

I hope to see you at the meeting.

Brian

Hi,

We had great attendance at the Illumina meeting.  Thank you for coming and thanks to Illumina for speaking.

I have begun posting files on the Yahoo website for the OSSD.  These include any presentation materials the speakers authorize as well as any papers or other technical materials to supplement the talks.

The meeting was much quicker than previous meetings.  We started only 10 min late and ended much earlier than 9 PM.  The group held their questions until the end of the talk.  There were still plenty of questions and the speaker was allowed to make progress through their talk without interruption.  I hope this is an improvement.  Please provide feedback.  Those of you that have stayed away because the meetings drag on too late, please reconsider.

I am working with a Prof. at UCSD to give a talk in November.  The rest of the year is open.  I need your help suggesting speakers.  I would love to have some speaker(s) from SDSU, Cymer, Melles Griot (CVI).  If you know anyone in particular, please make a suggestion.

I hope to see you next Thursday.

Brian

Brian

Hi,

After a long summer hiatus, the OSSD season has started.  Many thanks to Dave Schaafsma for arranging this month's speaker.  I would like your help arranging speakers and topics as well.  Our season was light last year because I have been personally arranging most of the talks.  I need more help like Dave's.  Dave called the speaker, requested a bio, arranged for the location, and set the date.  It usually takes less than 2 hours to arrange a meeting.  I would really appreciate your help.

Please take a couple minutes and let me know how to attract more people to our meetings.  I've received some feedback to make the talks end a little earlier to support family life.  I'll make sure the talks start on time to encourage them to end a little earlier.  Perhaps we'll even start the talks while we're eating.

With regards to attendance, the most popular reason I've heard for people attending talks is based upon the topic.  Therefore, I need your ideas for talks.  UCI's Beckman Laser Institute is hosting the OSSC (and OSSD?) later this year.  We have faculty at UCSD, SIO, and SDUSD that work in the optics area.  We have major companies we have not revisited in a while (e.g. Cymer, Melles Griot).  Please take a few seconds and let me know who you'd like to hear from.

I look forward to seeing you next Thurdsay.

Hi,

General Atomics did a great job hosting the meeting last month.
I'm pleased that it was so well attended.  Please provide me some
feedback as to how we can continue to have such a large number of
people enjoying the meetings.  Was it the subject matter?  The
location?  The food?  The cost?

This month's meeting will be a joint meeting with the Society
of Information Display (SID).  We'll be meeting SID at a restaurant
in Mission Bay.  RSVP's should be sent to SID.  Dinner is ala carte.

Next month's meeting will be presented by JDSU at the Fish and
Richardson office.  Mark your calendar's for April 19.

Finally, I want to encourage you to pass the word that this is my
LAST e-mail from my Caltech account.  All future e-mails will be from
the Yahoo! Groups distribution list.  You DO NOT need to sign up to
Yahoo to be on the distribution list.  Merely send e-mail to:

Hi,

A quick reminder to RSVP by the end of today for the meeting later this week.

So far I only have 62 members in the Yahoo! Group.  My e-mail list is almost 250 people long.  This means a few things:

1.  My list was longer than necessary
2.  People on the list didn't get my e-mail message
3.  People haven't signed up yet

I will be announcing only one more meeting usingmy Caltech e-mail address.  After that, all messages will come from the Optical Society of San Diego Yahoo! Group.  Please encourage people to sign up by sending a message to:  opticalsocietyofsandiego-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

Welcome back from the winter break.  We took the month of January off for
Photonics West.  Many thanks to Luxtera for hosting our last meeting.

I will be changing the method that announcements are sent out.  I have been
sending e-mail from my own account.  With spam filtering, limits on messages
from ISP's, and limitations in the server I use, it has become increasingly
difficult to send out announcements.

I have created a Group on Yahoo! Groups called:  "opticalsocietyofsa ndiego".
Your e-mail address will not be shared with anyone other than the moderator
of the group (me).  New members can join by accessing the website and
submitting their e-mail address.  I will be sending you an invitation so you can join
by merely following the link in the message.  Please respond by joining and
you'll be added to the e-mail list for announcements.  I welcome any feedback.

This month we will have our meeting at General Atomics.  Space is limited,
so please make an effort to RSVP.  I hope to see you there.
