That last job post for a VP of Marketing in a Sequoia Capital funded company made me curious enough to go the the VC web site and try to figure out which company.  That particular job does not seem to be posted there, but I discovered quite a few (15 or so) marketing, product marketing, product management and business development jobs.  Hard to say if these jobs are still open or not.

Funded start-ups are hiring so checking out the web sites of the leading Venture Capital organizations is a way to ferret out these jobs.  Anyone who has done this extensively, please post your experience on the softwareproductmarketing discussion eGroup.

Hi everyone,

While both the jobs and the discussion group continue add new members (member totals are 1,146 and 302 members respectively), at some point you may wish to unsubscribe.  Unfortunately Yahoo Groups appears to manage the subscription requests in a batch mode and that job either runs infrequently, or fails periodically.  So if you unsubscribe it may take a few days to have it take effect.  For this reason, if you wish to unsubscribe, I strongly recommend that you first set your message delivery to "Web only". That way, even though it takes Yahoo Groups days to unsubscribe you, the emails will stop.

As a reminder to everyone, on the group web site under "Edit my Membership", you have 3 choices for accessing the group information:

Individual emails.  Send individual email messages.
Daily digest.  Send many emails in one message.

No email.  Don't send me email, I'll read the messages at the Web site.

Do not choose the "Special notices" as that is not active for these groups.

I recommend "Individual emails" as you can get the best formatting and the most timely delivery.  I also recommend you set up a mail filter on the [spmjobs] or [spmdiscuss] keyword to direct the messages into an email folder.  Feel comfortable to delete messages because everything is archived on the group site.

"Daily digest" is also a good choice, but messages lose all of their formatting thus it can be hard to read

Dear Valued Members of the softwareproductmarketing jobs group,

More of you need to vote in the polls.  Right now only 15% of you have voted.  This isn't critical mass to make this data an effective tool for me to help you in your job search.

I'm  puzzled - most of you are here to find jobs in a very tough market, and answering these questions is a brief 5-minute time investment. If this is too much trouble, are you actually up to applying for a job? (If the questions are confusing, or you have privacy concerns, etc. please contact me.  All responses to the poll are anonymous to everyone, including me.)

Why this poll is good for YOU:

The more information I can present about the members, the more I can entice hiring managers, recruiters and HR personnel to post their BEST jobs here FIRST! They like targeted marketing just like everybody else.

The hoi polloi on other less focused list will be left in the dust. That means fewer but higher quality resumes to hiring firms and a better chance for YOU to get the RIGHT JOB!

The results of the polls are useful and will give YOU insight into what's going on in the marketplace, knowledge about your job-seeking competitors.  But this is only true if a statistically significant number of you VOTE!

OK, TIME TO VOTE! Take only 5 minutes out of your "busy" schedule.

ALL 11 POLL QUESTIONS ARE NOW POSTED AND CAN BE FOUND HERE:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/softwareproductmarketing/polls

Yahoo put them in a strange order (I'll buy a cup of coffee for whoever can explain it), so I suggest you answer the questions by date.  But don't get caught up in the details, just answer the questions.

Thanks and may you leave the jobs group soon except to return later as a hiring manager :-)

Entrepreneurial Sales and Marketing opportunity at Prescient Software

The company and product:

Prescient Software is a very small self funded software company. The company manufacturers and sells MergeRight™, a tool for comparing two modified versions of a file and merging the changes to each back into a single consistent document.

Currently, this product sells primarily to software developers, especially those working in teams on parallel development.   The product is designed to be complementary to and to plug in with version control and software configuration management tools that programmers use to create and track these parallel but divergent versions.   However, this technology may be applicable in other areas as well, such as web site management, legal and legislative arenas.

People prefer MergeRight for this work because of its easy to learn and easy to use user interface has been shown to significantly reduce time and dramatically increase accuracy in creating correct merged documents.

MergeRight has been sold through a self serve website and by direct sales to commercial software developers.  Recently, Lucent selected MergeRight to be integrated into their Sablime™ version control software.   Prescient Software would like to move our sales focus to similar integration and bundling licenses to other companies offering version control, software development tools or other tools where merge functionality would improve their products.

The position:

Prescient Software is looking for an entrepreneurial focussed sales and marketing representative who can identify prospective licensees and close integration license sales with them. The selected candidate will be an effective sales representative comfortable establishing contacts and closing deals at the most senior levels of large organizations. In support of these activities, the candidate will initially also have responsibility for developing and managing all sales and marketing communications including the company website, advertising and lead generation.

Because Prescient Software is very small, this is primarily an entrepreneurial opportunity.

Initially, this position is an individual contributor position, so the successful candidate must be versatile enough to “do it all”.  There is no staff available to delegate to at this time.  For this reason, an independent sales and marketing consultant background may be more appropriate than an exclusively large corporate background.  However, a considerable amount of the revenues will be returned to the sales and marketing budget that the ideal candidate would manage.  Ideally, the selected candidate will also have management skills and would be able to manage that budget and grow a sales and marketing department beneath them.  If very successful, the candidate will be given the opportunity to become general manager of the company.

This is truly a position that is what YOU make of it.

Compensation:

Because we are small, the initial base salary or retainer will be extremely modest, however, commissions will be generous.  With success, will come a higher base.  To compensate for the small initial base, the company is willing to entertain a part time contract employee or independent consultant in this position while we both become familiar with each other and the chances for our mutual success.

To apply:

Send contact information, resume, and a cover letter explaining why you will be successful in this position, drawing attention to relevant past experiences and contacts you may have.

Study Managers  - 2 positions in Malvern, Pennsylvania

Our client is looking for 2 candidates with at least 5-6 years of experience  as a CRA (at least in part in-house) and/or as a study manager at a CRO and/or a pharmaceutical company. Managing in-house and contract CRAs, managing CROs and other vendors will be important components of the job.   Only team-oriented self-starters with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude will thrive in our environment.  In view of the level of the job, they usually hire local candidates, but relocation is possible for that exceptional candidate mentioned above. Their main biotechnology platform is based on monoclonal antibodies. Antibodies are proteins secreted in the blood to defend against such invaders as viruses or bacteria. Antibodies seek out, then selectively bind
to these targets. This alerts the immune system to attack the foreign substance. Many different types of antibodies are naturally produced within the body in response to various substances. Using what is known about the benefits of these antibodies, scientists develop monoclonal antibodies to accurately target specific substances that have been proven to be harmful to the body.

Monoclonal antibodies are antibodies derived from clones, or exact copies, of a single cell. These monoclonal antibodies can be screened in the lab to zero in on a specific type of material in the body. This makes them powerful tools to diagnose and treat targeted diseases.

Our client has put biotechnology to work on many of today's most difficult healthcare challenges. Their  products have revolutionized the management of heart attack, unstable angina, coronary angioplasty, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Hi everyone,

The polls are still open.  Now that I have some early results, I am using this information to actively solicit new job postings...but, I still need the REST (approx. 80%) of you to vote!  Please don't be turned away by the poll format...the poll tool at Yahoo Groups is extremely primitive (for example, I can only ask ONE question per poll).  Please answer all questions as best you can.  Because the order is strange (another problem with the poll software) it's best to answer the questions by date rather than from top to bottom. Link to polls:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/softwareproductmarketing/polls.

[Note that the number of votes varies wildly because some questions were multiple choice and the poll software is counting every vote, not number of individuals that voted.  Another bug in the Yahoo Groups poll software.]

Below is an example of how I successfully used the poll information to obtain several job listings.  I am having to make some pretty far-fetched "guesses" as to the demographics of the list though since so few of you have voted.  The more of you that vote, the more effective I can be in getting the right jobs listed!
------------------

Dear Bill (a recruiter who has several interesting jobs to fill),

Would you like me to post these positions to my softwareproductmarketing egroup? There are over 1,150 hi-tech marketing and business development professionals in the egroup. The link to the egroup is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/softwareproductmarketing.

Re: your first position for a technical product manager:
3% of the members have security experience, 6% have networking experience, and 25% are interested in positions in Northern California.

Re: your second position for a VP of Software Marketing:
38% of the members have an undergraduate technical degree, 50% have an MBA, 37% have 16 years or more of relevant job experience, and 12% are seeking VP-level positions.

No charge; it's my way of giving back to the community. Feel free to send me additional hi-tech marketing or business development jobs for posting to this list. Job location should be specified, and whether or not you will consider out-of-region candidates. Please be sure your emailbox is not full, and has enough open storage to accept a significant amount of new resumes.
