Job seekers gravitate to specialized job boards

Published: Friday, January 03, 2003

As economy stumbles along, the valley's unemployed test waters of niche online job boards to land key positions

BY STEVE TANNER

For both out-of-work professionals and employers looking to hire, niche online job boards are beginning to win favor over large, catch-all services.

Mandeep Khera joined the Silicon Valley-focused nonprofit Software Product Marketing eGroup community (www.SoftwareProductMarketing.com) in October after striking out on the so-called "big boards," such as HotJobs.com and Monster.com. Khera, who found his job via SPM, now works in the marketing department of Mountain View-based VeriSign Inc.

"SPM is unique in that it is focused on marketing professionals," says Khera. "It gets rid of the information glut for both the recruiting entity and the candidate."

Monster.com and HotJobs.com both declined to comment for this story.

A niche job board focuses on a specific market sector or geographic region. Monster.com, on the other hand, boasts more than 1 million new job postings each month in most industries nationwide.

San Francisco-based Craigslist.org has a Bay Area focus and has introduced sister sites for other metropolitan regions, while SPM is an online organization of software marketing professionals seeking work, mostly in Silicon Valley.

Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, says he has been seeing small but steady growth in most of his region-specific job boards, particularly in New York.

"Even in the Bay Area, we've seen increasing rates in [the number of] job postings," Newmark says.

The brainchild of SPM is former Sun Microsystems Inc. marketing manager Cynthia Typaldos, founder of Internet startups RealCommunities Inc. and GolfWeb Inc. (sold in 2001 and 1998, respectively). SPM operates with no budget and volunteers.

And unlike for-profit job boards, SPM doesn't charge employers for postings.

"Face it, companies do not like to pay fees. With so many candidates available, they want to find the right person," says Typaldos, who founded SPM in November 2001.

"These niche job boards, in theory, narrow down the search to qualified candidates," says Jeff Silber, senior analyst who specializes in job boards with New York-based investment firm Gerard Klauer Mattison.

"I think the niche job boards give you a lot more than just posting your resume on a big board."

With so many job seekers and so few jobs, Typaldos says, employers don't have time to sift through hundreds of resumes.

Barry James Folsom, chairman of Mountain View-based PlaceWare Inc., posted a job on SPM for a vice president of marketing.

"Although we didn't hire any of those folks, it gave us a great candidate pool," says Folsom. "Like anything else, when you specialize, the service will be more in tune to connecting seller and buyer. The same is true for job boards."

Eventually, Folsom says, he found a VP through mutual contacts.

Analysts generally see the migration to niche job boards as a sign of the times, and believe Monster.com and HotJobs.com will be stronger in the recovery, but also see a real trend.

"I think in the fairly near future, these groups will have a tendency to displace some of the for-profit job boards in their particular market segment," says Don Muchow, and independent consultant based in Dallas, who has devised a method of quantifying the effectiveness of online job boards.

Muchow -- who has identified 4,500 niche job boards posted at Yahoo.com, about 60 with more than 500 members -- doesn't see their popularity as a threat to Monster.com (a division of New York-based TMP Worldwide Inc.) or HotJobs.com (recently acquired by Sunnyvale-based Yahoo Inc.).

According to Muchow, listings such as SPM are more likely to get copied or swallowed up by the big guys.

Meanwhile, the big boards likely will start taking notes to remain competitive.

Strategies for helping the unemployed
VALLEY WORKERS HOPE CONGRESS RESTORES AID

Marsha Adams says the unemployment checks are paying her rent. The rest of her money comes from selling off pieces of her extensive Alice in Wonderland collection, including this snow globe, on eBay.

For thousands of unemployed workers, the end of the federal extension of unemployment benefits last week is a political issue made intensely personal. For some, it creates an almost immediate financial crisis. Others find themselves one step closer to life-changing decisions, such as selling the house and leaving Silicon Valley.

``Right now I'm in a position where I'm going to be able to pay my January rent and pay my bills,'' said Alicia Garcia, a single mother in Belmont with a 7-year-old son. Garcia has been looking for work as a credit manager since being laid off in May. ``After that, I don't know where the money's going to come from.''

Congress could restore the benefits when it reconvenes next week, and many observers expect it will. Nationwide unemployment was 6 percent in November, while California's rate was 6.4 percent (both seasonally adjusted). In Silicon Valley, the situation is even worse: Unemployment in Santa Clara County was 7.8 percent in November.

California's unemployment insurance program, which provides up to 26 weeks of $330 payments, remains intact (and benefits will increase to a maximum of $370 a week for those who file an initial claim on or after Sunday). The federal government had extended the benefits for an additional 13 weeks. But the extension expired Saturday, leaving almost 800,000 workers nationwide, including more than 100,000 in California, without benefits.

``This basically means I won't be able to pay my bills,'' said Dick Penny of Mountain View, a finance professional for start-ups. Penny, who is in his early 60s, said his savings have dwindled during his months of unemployment, and his extended unemployment benefits were keeping him afloat. He is now looking at jobs in Sacramento and North Carolina. ``We're pretty convinced that high tech's not going to come back in the near future, and we're probably going to have to leave the area.''

For Ravi, a San Jose database architect with two school-age children and a wife who is also job hunting, continued benefits would allow him a few more months to find a job without having to sell his four-bedroom home in the Evergreen neighborhood.

``I don't want to sell the house,'' said Ravi, who asked that his full name not be used.

`No Christmas'

Having the extension expire in the middle of the holiday season was an added blow.

``There was no Christmas this year,'' said Marsha Adams, a high-tech marketing professional from San Mateo who greatly cut back her gift giving.

Adams, 56, has begun selling 30 years' worth of ``Alice in Wonderland'' collectibles on eBay to help pay the bills. She had been hoping to qualify for extended benefits in January.

``I've got to have time to find something else,'' Adams said.

In his weekly radio address Dec. 14, President Bush called on Congress to extend unemployment benefits when it reconvenes.

But critics say Bush should have weighed in when Congress was debating the issue in November. The House and Senate passed separate bills to extend unemployment benefits but couldn't hash out a compromise before lawmakers adjourned.

``If the president had been more vocal in November, people might not have lost their benefits, but he waited until Congress left,'' said Jason Dring of the National Employment Law Project, a worker advocacy group.

Details unclear

If Congress does pass an extension, it's unclear exactly who would get benefits, or for how long. Some lawmakers, particularly liberals and representatives of states hit hard by the recession, want to provide as much as 19 weeks of additional payments to some workers after their federal extension runs out. At the other end of the spectrum is a House Republican plan that would extend the just-expired program through March, but only in states such as California with high unemployment.

Advocates say the benefits help the down and out get back on their feet and give the economy a boost.

``The money goes directly to the people who are hurt the most, and it goes to people who, because of their sometimes dire circumstances, put the money directly back into the economy,'' said Isaac Shapiro, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal-leaning think tank in Washington, D.C.

Some conservatives agree that the benefits can be useful but need to be coupled with tax cuts, which they say will create jobs.

``You won't find us saying unemployment insurance is a bad thing,'' said Bill Beach, director of the Center for Data Analysis of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. ``But it must be accompanied by strong economic-growth legislation.''

Back in Silicon Valley, the unemployed hope Congress reaches an agreement soon. ``It's really hard, I think, for politicians to see the reality of what's going on because they live comfortable lives. They don't know what it's like to go to a food bank and stand in line,'' said Garcia.

(This email is in HTML format as is everything posted to the egroup.  HTML formatting is used extensively in these emails as it enables the highlighting of key information.  If you are on the digest form, you cannot receive HTML formatting and you may wish to switch to the individual emails and route them to a folder.)

Hi everyone,

A lot of new members have joined in the last six months, in fact the size of the egroup has doubled from 1,300 members to 2,500 members.  This is both BAD news, and GOOD news.

The BAD news is that so many of us are searching for a new position and in some ways we are competition with each other.

But the GOOD news is that by POOLING OUR RESOURCES we can all be successful!

The Software Product Marketing (SPM) eGroup is not a place for passivity -- we have active ways for every single member to contribute, be involved, and help the group, which of course is actually helping yourself.  You will be learning more about these active ways to contribute in further emails.

All I want to do in this email is welcome everyone, new and old members, to what is going to be a great 2003 where we all take back our careers and manage our own destiny.

If you haven't perused the website, please do so.
It has lots of information about who we are from a survey done last summer, bios of the volunteers, our press release, and links to the great press we are getting since the website announcement.  Additionally there is a terrific presentation about us that includes photos and expertise summaries of 150 of the members.  If you want to be featured in the presentation and on the site, don't worry, there will be opportunities for everyone coming up in the next few months. [Note on the survey -- even though the group has doubled in size since we did the survey, we still believe the results to be very accurate with the exception of current location.  The geographical distribution of members is much wider now.]

Regarding the press we have received; there are 3 articles so far (you can find them in the press section):
o    About.com Entrepreneurs article
o    Computerworld article
o    Silicon Valley Business Ink article
An article in Technology Marketing will be published this week.
We have also entered our website in the Webby Awards category of services.  We expect to win!

Just a reminder that there is a a sibling egroup for discussions about software marketing.  You can find the link to it on the website or go here directly:
groups.yahoo.com/group/softwareproductmarketingdiscussion

And a note about the job postings -- the focus is on positions for software/networking/telecom/systems marketing and business development professionals.  We rarely post jobs outside of this space.  Being focused makes us more valuable to both the job seeker and the job poster.

Feel free to send me or any of the other Directors your ideas or comments.  The SPM Directors' bios and email addresses can be found here:

Hi everyone,

SPM eGroup membership has doubled since we did our membership survey in the summer of 2002.  We believe that the new members are similar to the existing members in nearly every way, except in geographical location preferences.

Because geographical location is very important to job posters, we are running a TWO QUESTION SURVEY to re-gather this information.  The survey takes 10 SECONDS to complete.
Click here for the survey: http://tinyurl.com/4c4i .

You should fill out the survey even if you were a member during the first survey and you answered this question then.  The results of this new survey will replace the the results for the previous survey.  This is very important!

There are two questions:
  • your current location (one choice)
  • locations you would consider (multiple choice)
Both questions must be answered for the response to be accepted.  There is also an optional question to gather feedback on the survey or the SPM eGroup in general.

All responses are anonymous.  If you have any questions or problems, please send an email to spmquestions@yahoogroups.com.

Our goal is a 30% or better response rate.  The survey will be open for 1 week.

Remember, the more accurate this information is, the more likely jobs will be posted in your geographical areas of choice!

Thanks very much.

Cynthia

[Membership was 1300 when we did the original survey, it is now 2600.  All survey results can be found on the SPM eGroup website at www.softwareproductmarketing.com.]
